FROM KEITH GROLLER
In Saturday's NCAA FCS playoff game between Lehigh and Towson, the host Tigers will have someone on their coaching staff who has coached against Lehigh many times before.
Towson's defensive coordinator Matt Hachmann (pictured at right) coached at Lafayette from 2000-2008, serving as Frank Tavani's linebackers coach for eight seasons.
He worked closely with Lafayette defensive coordinator John Loose. In fact he serves as a board member for Loose's "Lauren's First and Goal Football Camp."
Hachmann was a member of the Leopards staff from 2004 to 2006 when the Leopards won three consecutive Patriot League titles and routinely beat Lehigh in the final game of the regular season.
He brings valuable playoff experience to the Towson coaching staff since he was with Lafayette when the Leopards played Appalachian State in 2005 and met UMass in 2006.
In 2007, Lafayette had the top-ranked defense in the nation.
Hachmann helped to produce such Lafayette stars as Andy Romans and Maurice Bennett and nine of his linebackers earned all-Patriot League honors.
Earlier this week I asked Towson's outstanding defensive tackle Marcus Valentine if Hachmann's knowledge of Lehigh would provide an edge for the Tigers defense.
He said: "Coach Hachmann is a big help every week. We call him the defensive guru because he's so smart and so talented with his defensive calls. He is a great coach and he has prepared us well this week."
Hachmann, however, has not matched wits with Lehigh offensive coordinator Dave Cecchini who is in his second year back with the Mountain Hawks.
Still, Hachmann is respected by Lehigh head coach Andy Coen.
"Towson has a very similar philosophy defensively to Lafayette and they do a lot of similar things up front," Coen said. "Matt has put his own stamp on things, but they do a very good job in disguising coverages. They'll line up with a safety two yards off the line of scrimmage and then he'll drop back in a Cover-2 type coverage. That's a big challenge for us and it's good that we had an extra week to prepare to go through a lot of different things."

Nazareth Area School Board member Thomas Maher dies suddenly, district says
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
The Nazareth Area School District today mourned the sudden death of board treasurer Thomas K. Maher, who school administrators described as a “fiscal watchdog” and asset in the community.
Maher, 61, of Creekside Drive, Upper Nazareth Township, died Wednesday morning. He ran unopposed in the general election and was scheduled to be sworn into a four-year term during Monday’s school board meeting. He attended last week's board meeting.
An e-mail sent out to the district community by Superintendent Victor Lesky didn’t disclose the circumstances of his death. Arrangements are being handled by the Bartholomew-Schisler Funeral Home of Nazareth.
“Mr. Maher took his duties as a board member very seriously,” Lesky said this afternoon. “Tom felt an obligation to keep himself informed and up to date on all district activities. Tom's decisions were always based on the best interests of our students while maintaining the district's fiscal integrity. Mr. Maher's 12 years on the board made me a better superintendent of schools.”
Maher leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Debra, who works as pupil services director secretary in the district, and three sons -- Thomas III, of San Francisco, Daniel, of Bethlehem and James, of Nazareth. All three are Nazareth Area High School graduates.
Maher, a certified public accountant who holds an MBA, was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1971 to 1973, and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Maher was employed at Sensient Cosmetic Technologies in South Plainfield, N.J.
He joined the school board in 1999, later serving as treasurer and chairman of the audit and finance committee, and served on various other district committees.
"(He) served proudly as treasurer on the Nazareth Area School Board; he simply believed strongly in fiscal responsibility, planning and open communication," James Maher, his son, said via e-mail.
During his time spent on the school board, Maher often cast the lone vote against various issues.
"We did have some differences and we looked at things differently sometimes," said school board member Linda McDonald. "I respected that and that will be missed. He was an important piece of the board."
Board member Darrell Crook said while Maher often was critical over issues before the board, he brought a fresh perspective.
"My feelings about Tom is it's a loss to the district and board," Crook said.
"I was looking forward to working with Mr. Maher," school board member-elect Chris Miller said. "He was extremely knowledgeable when it came to the budget. I will miss him."
Lesky said the board will have to appoint a new board member to fill Maher’s vacancy within 30 days. That person will be able to run in the next municipal election against anyone else who may file to run. Whoever wins the election would finish the remaining time left on Maher's original four-year term.
Maher also had served as part of the community advisory committee for the Memorial Library of Nazareth & Vicinity. He was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. His family said his hobbies included reading, history, watching football and traveling. In 2010, he and Debra traveled to Paris for a week and frequently talked of returning.
“He said he'd like nothing more than a retirement where he could sit at a Parisian sidewalk cafe overlooking the Seine and play an iPad accordion,” James Maher said.
In listing his accomplishments on the board, Maher in a 2003 interview with The Express-Times cited fulfilling a promise to restore the public's confidence in the school board by making sure more information is posted on the district's website.

UNT TAX HIKE
FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER
Had a few readers request a reference to the Express-Times article indicating that UNT will be increasing taxes by 83%.
A defense of the hike noted in the article is the fact that it is only the 2nd tax increase in 20 years, the last was in 2005. I find this is typical of municipal government, they try very hard to hold the line, but hit a point where a hike is necessary. This is unlike the School systems that take 3-5% per year, or more if they can, whether they currently 'need' the money or not. By this I look at NASD which raised taxes one year to grow the base so the following year's increase would bring in more tax revenue even through they didn't need the full amount of the first hike to balance the budget.
The article states that over the past four years UNT has taken $1M out of savings to cover budget gaps.
I don't take issue with trying to hold the line, but I do with a lack of thinking ahead. In this instance a few more modest increases wouldn't have cost anyone an election and were apparently needed to provide the level of service expected/delivered by the township.
More bothersome is the argument that an exploding population is to blame. Who approved the housing? The Township.
Worse yet, a part of the excess population was due to a zoning exception to allow more homes in exchange for the donation of land and creation of a park (Tuskes aka Payoff Park). Now an additional cost is maintenance of said park. The Township should be charging Tuskes a fee for having their name on the park as a sponsorship to off-set maintenance, instead they are nearly doubling the tax paid by residents.
For the record, I am not outraged by this action, I do not live in UNT, but I do find myself mystified by the short-sightedness sometimes exhibited by elected officials.

TV NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 30
As we hinted previously, Antenna TV will have a marathon of Christmas episodes on Christmas Eve and Day and then a marathon of Burns & Allen and Jack Benny Program on New Year's Eve! Spend the holidays with your favorite sitcom stars as Antenna TV, Tribune Broadcasting's multicast broadcast network, airs a full weekend of holiday episodes on Christmas weekend, and a Burns and Allen Show and a Jack Benny Program marathon on New Year's Eve. Antenna TV, which airs on 52 affiliates across the U.S. reaching 57% of TV households, will feature a weekend of holiday programming beginning at 1pm ET on Saturday, December 24, 2011 and running through 11pm ET on Sunday, December 25, 2011. Programs include holiday episodes of: The Burns and Allen Show, Father Knows Best, Dennis the Menace, Hazel, The Flying Nun, McHale's Navy, The Monkees, The Partridge Family, The Monkees, Dragnet, Here Come the Brides, Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, The Nanny, Married...with Children, NewsRadio, Good Times, Sanford and Son, Too Close for Comfort, Three's Company, All in the Family and Maude. And if that's not all, watch The Yule Log from 3-7am ET bright and early on Christmas Day! View the complete schedule for the Christmas episodes on Christmas Eve and Day (scroll down below the regular schedule).
On New Year's Eve, Antenna TV will ring in 2012 with a Burns and Allen Show and a Jack Benny Program marathon (34 episodes/17 hours.) Beginning at 3pm ET on Saturday, December 31 and running through 8am ET on Sunday, January 1, the Burns and Allen episodes will feature the top rated episodes and the Jack Benny episodes will feature celebrity guest-star episodes like Lucile Ball, Bob Hope, and Carol Burnett! The marathon will have an episode each in an hour, so for example Burns and Allen Show at 3pm, followed by Jack Benny Program at 3:30pm, and then back to Burns & Allen at 4pm, and so on. Then on New Year's Day when the marathon is over by 8am ET, watch The Three Stooges all day on the first day of the year from 8am-12am ET! More info on that will come soon, as episode info is not available yet. For now, view the full New Year's Eve schedule of episodes for Burns & Allen and Jack Benny (scroll down below the regular schedule).
Antenna TV has some good stunts and surprises planned for 2012, so you'll want to keep it right here for the up-to-date news and schedule! Can't believe Antenna TV will be on the air a year by Jan. 1.
GSN (Game Show Network) announced recently that it has acquired the exclusive off-network rights to ABC's Dancing with the Stars from Disney-ABC Domestic Television, which will make GSN the only network on which previous seasons of the mega-hit dance competition can be seen. GSN has acquired seasons 4 through 13 (season 13 just finished last week on ABC), and will begin airing them in January 2012. The agreement also includes the upcoming 14th season that starts in March on ABC.
Dancing with the Stars episodes on GSN will feature a wide variety of celebrities who have brought glamour, humor, and even some lively controversy to the show - including Chaz Bono, Bristol Palin, Kim Kardashian, Cloris Leachman, Susan Lucci, Tom DeLay, Kate Gosselin, David Hasselhoff, Laila Ali, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, Michael Bolton, Florence Henderson, Jennifer Grey, Wayne Newton, Marie Osmond, Donnie Osmond, Melissa Joan Hart, Mel B, Shawn Johnson, Kelly Osbourne, Pamela Anderson, Nancy Grace, Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez, and Kirstie Alley, among many others.
The first season (the fourth season) of Dancing with the Stars to air on GSN features a diverse cross-section of celebrities from television, movies, music, sports, fashion and society, each paired with a professional dancer.
Dancing with the Stars was last seen on cable on BBC America in early 2008 back when they aired season two with stars like Drew Lachey, Stacey Keibler, Master P and Kenny Mayne. No word if they hold the rights to seasons 1-3, but GSN doesn't have the rights to those seasons, so we won't see stars like Mario Lopez, Emmit Smith and Kelly Monaco. Stay with us for more information, such as the GSN premiere date and regular air times. Stay tuned!

Stay tuned!

Nazareth Area High School football team to get community sendoff for PIAA playoff game
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Nazareth Area High School wants to spread the word to students, alumni and the community to help send off the football team Saturday on its way to its PIAA playoff game.

Team buses will leave 10:30 a.m. for Bethlehem Area School District Stadium, where the District 11 Class AAAA champion Blue Eagles will play La Salle College High School at 1 p.m. in the state quarterfinal playoffs.
Vigilance Hose Co. No. 1 is getting in on the action.

From CBS3:
Dr. Phil, the new leader in daytime talk, made a strong showing in his first season in Oprah’s old time period at 4 p.m. in Philadelphia, according to the November 2011 Nielsen ratings. The good doctor was number one in ratings in Adults 25-54, up 75 percent over 2010 and Women 25-54, up 175 percent over the previous year, beating out WPVI’s 4 p.m. newscast in those key demographics.
Here’s some other November sweeps news from CBS3:
The good news for CBS 3 actually started earlier in the day where Eyewitness News Anchors Ukee Washington and Erika von Tiehl, Meteorologist Katie Fehlinger and Traffic Reporter Bob Kelly saw gains across the board. Early morning news ratings are up 25 percent in Adults 25-54 and 25 percent in Women 25-54 from 4:30 to 5 a.m. In the 5 to 7 a.m. block, ratings rose 9 percent in Women 25-54 and 33 percent in Adults 25-54. As the newscast continued on The CW Philly from 7 to 9 a.m., so did the good news with gains of 100 percent in Adults 25-54 and 100 percent in Women 25-54.

From CBS3:

Pen Argyl vs. West Catholic is one of the lehighvalleylive.com football games of the week
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
The Pen Argyl football team faces its toughest challenge of the season on Saturday afternoon when it takes on defending state champion West Catholic in the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals.
But Green Knights' coach Paul Reduzzi isn't calling for any drastic change as his undefeated team gets ready for this weekend's showdown.
"We're just stressing to the kids to keep doing the things we did all year," Reduzzi said. "It's a different opponent. Maybe it's tough to compare a Colonial League team to them in terms of size and speed but we have done good things all year both sides of the ball by being fundamental."
Join editor Joseph P. Owens at noon Saturday for a live blog of Pen Argyl's game against West Catholic at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
Also make sure to follow live blogs of the Pius X-Southern Columbia game on Friday night and the Nazareth-La Salle game on Saturday afternoon.

Meyers switches gears at Pen Argyl
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Jeff Meyers resigned recently as the head boys soccer coach at Pen Argyl High School, and will be spending more time with family -- his father.
Meyers will join his father George's staff as the girls JV coach beginning in the spring. This setup is not new. Jeff Meyers was an assistant to George Meyers until taking over the boys program four years ago.
The Green Knights went 3-14-1 this year and were 20-51-2 in Meyers' four seasons as head coach. Meyers said another reason for moving toward the girls program is that he and his father both coach girls' club teams in the offseason, and syncing their efforts made logistical sense.

Moravian's Krasley honored: Moravian College volleyball libero Jesse Krasley was named honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association recently. Krasley, a junior, has had a career season, now owning every dig record at Moravian. She finished the season with a team-high 803 digs and 47 service aces. She also was second in assists with 118. Krasley has a record 1,748 digs.
Krasley was also named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team and second team All-Conference.
Greyhounds named to all-academic team: Seniors Diana Feldmann, Matt Lutcza and Cadee Rockwell along with junior Nicholas Hurff from Moravian College have been named to the 2011 Landmark Conference fall All-Academic team announced Tuesday.
The Landmark Conference has selected 32 student-athletes for the 2011 Fall Landmark All-Academic Team -- two male and two female athletes from each of the eight Landmark institutions, who must be a sophomore or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better.
College basketball honors: Danielle Fiacco has been named the Patriot League women's basketball player of the week after averaging a double-double for the Lafayette women's basketball team in a 2-1 week. Over three games last week, Fiacco averaged 19.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game while shooting 54 percent from the field.
East Stroudsburg University's Jessica Martin has been named the PSAC East freshman of the week after earning the MVP award at the 47th Annual Pocono Classic last weekend at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Senior guard Jim Mower and freshman guard Seth Hinrichs each earned Patriot League weekly honors for their role in Lafayette's two men's basketball games this past week. Mower was named player of the week and Hinrichs was chosen as rookie of the week for the second consecutive week.

For next big storm, PPL promises better communications
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Reacting to two storm-related crises this year, PPL Electric Utilities has submitted the state a plan the company says will make it easier for customers to report power outages during a major storm.
Among PPL's proposals are 20 percent more phone lines, an increase in PPL service representatives answering the phones, and easier ways to reach the company through the Internet in an emergency.

The multimillion-dollar proposals, submitted recently to the state Public Utility Commission, are an answer to the public frustration with the many hours or many days without electricity after the remnants of Hurricane Irene in late August and the snowstorm in late October.
"We certainly heard from customers," PPL spokesman Michael Wood said Tuesday. "The remarks from customers, the complimentary emails, far outweighed the critical ones. But we sure heard the complaints that customers couldn't reach us. This is really a response to that."
Wood said the outage-reporting improvements are not required, but the PUC has made it clear it is paying attention to what utilities do to better prepare for major storms.
In addition to the new phone lines, PPL says it will lease extra phone capacity during high-volume call periods, improve the computerized voice system on its phones, and refine its estimates of when lost power will be restored.
The utility plans to offer new ways to report outages on smartphones and other Internet links, and it proposes to issue power status updates through Twitter, Facebook and other media.
Wood said the changes will help PPL repair crews as well as PPL customers.
"Even with automated meters, we want to hear from customers so that we have a true picture of how much damage is out there and how many customers are without power," he said.
"With the automated meters, we perform a pinging operation to find outages," Wood said. "That is a feature of the system. The more features you use during the early part of the storm, you're tying up critical parts of the system that are needed to analyze trouble and allow the operators to work on restoration."
David G. DeCampli, president of PPL Electric Utilities, committed to the improvements after the October snowstorm, when the company had far more phone calls than it could handle, Wood said.
"We saw call volumes like never before," Wood said. "On a typical weekday, we have call volumes of 5,000 to 10,000. During the [Irene and snow] storms, we had peak hours greater than 100,000, and 1.2 million calls during each of the two events.
"We handled more calls in two weeks than in all of 2010."
Some of the items in the PPL plan already are being implemented, Wood said. Others will be in place by the end of the year, and the rest are targeted for completion in early 2012.
After the remnants of Hurricane Irene swept through eastern Pennsylvania on Aug. 27 and 28, about 428,000 PPL customers lost power.
The Oct. 28-29 snowstorm cut power to 388,000 PPL customers, and nearly half of them were in the Lehigh Valley. Nearly 10,000 in the Lehigh Valley had no electricity for six days after the snow.

Top ten list of favorite rock/pop songs from the 1960s
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
Can you remember when you heard that one song that changed the way you listened to music?
I can recall my moment like it was yesterday. It was the summer of 1964, the Beatles (and their fans) were already in full throat, and my baseball-playing friends from the neighborhood and I were camping out one night in the backyard of a buddies’ home. It was around 2 o’clock in the morning and I was listening to my little transistor radio — the ones that required new batteries about every other day.
Then I heard it. The Beachboys’ seminal song “I Get Around” was a big hit at the time and the DJs on WAEB were playing it about every 10 minutes. But the overnight DJ at the time — I forget who it was, maybe Barry George or Super Lou — turned the record over and played the flip side, “Don’t Worry Baby.”
It was three minutes of pure bliss, enough to change the way I heard music. I never experienced any melody so beautiful. In my humble opinion, it still is the best rock/pop song ever composed and I still get goose bumps when I hear it.
AP photoBrian Wilson of the Beachboys penned the song "Don't Worry Baby."
With “Don’t Worry Baby” the zenith of my rock/pop charts, here’s the rest of what I consider the best 10 songs from the 1960s. Many of these songs were never really hits but I grade them high for presence, listenability, “goose bump” quality and just an inspiring feel-good sensibility about them.
What’s your top 10 list like? I’d really like to know. Doesn’t have to be exclusively from the 1960s, either. Lady Gaga, any heavy metal song, or a rap piece are all in play.
1. “Don’t Worry Baby” by the Beachboys. If this were the only song Brian Wilson wrote in his life, he’d still be considered a genius. Great drum lead-in. Three minutes of pure ecstacy.
2. “I Fought the Law” by Bobby Fuller Four. Too bad Bobby died in his mid-20s (it was ruled a suicide but many believe he was murdered) because he was a true talent and a phenomenal guitarist. Song was written by Sonny Curtis, one of the Crickets. Bobby’s clean guitar work is priceless.
3. “Ain’t that Peculiar” by Marvin Gaye. Greatest soul song ever recorded, in my opinion. Rolling piano part that kicks off the song is something you can’t get out of your head.
4. “You’ll Never Get to Heaven (if You Break My Heart)” by Dionne Warwick. Another Burt Bacharach and Hal David composition done for Dionne. Yeah, I know it’s a little sappy but I’ve always been a sucker for melodic love songs.
5. “You Gave Me Somebody to Love” by the Dreamlovers. Philly group which sang backup on a few Chubby Checker records. It’s strange that this song never charted but it’s still a great song with tremendous presence. I’ve heard other artists cover this and I’ve enjoyed every version.
6. “Love is a Hurtin’ Thing” by Lou Rawls. Inspirational song with great orchestra work. I would have loved to see Lou do this song live.
7. “Every Time That You Walk in the Room” by the Searchers. Written by Jackie DeShannon. Phenomenal guitar riff throughout this record. Very underrated British invasion group, by the way.
8. “And Then He Kissed Me” by the Crystals. Quintessential Wall-of-Sound record produced by Phil Spector.
9. “Little Lonely Summer Girl” by David Box. Great record that generated absolutely no fanfare. Box was briefly a member of the Crickets and, coincidentally, died in a plane crash in his early 20s. This kid, in my estimation, would have been a superstar had his life not ended so early.
10. “Things We Said Today” by the Beatles. Can’t be a 60’s top 10 list without at least one Beatles song. The tough thing, though, is to single out just one.

Public gets detailed look at arena plans tonight
FROM THE MORNING CALL
After months of reading and hearing about the city's plans to build a more than $100 million hockey arena downtown, people get a first chance tonight to examine the plans for themselves.
The first of three meetings in which Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski and developers will explain their plans to build a hockey arena at Seventh and Hamilton Street is tonight, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Allentown Central High School.
That meeting will be followed by a second meeting, from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Scottish Rite Cathedral's Moulson Room at 1533 Hamilton St., and a final public meeting from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Dieruff High School cafeteria on N. Irving Street.
Mike Moore, city spokesman, said people will get an opportunity to question the mayor and master planners, Hammes Company, face-to-face, about how they plan to develop downtown Allentown in the coming years.
The first public glimpse comes after months of action by the Allentown Commercial and Industrial Development Authority. As the city was arranging to move 34 property owners out of their homes and businesses on the arena block, ACIDA was lining up a $175 million in potential financing for the arena and accompanying concert and convention venue that would be built in a second phase of the project.
Demolition on the properties that will be replaced by the glass and steel arena is expected to begin before the end of the year. The arena is tentatively scheduled to open in for the 2013 hockey season. The arena is slated to be home to the Phantoms, the minor league affiliate to the Philadelphia Flyers.
