The Liberty High wrestling team reached a statewide milestone Saturday, becoming just the fourth team in Pennsylvania history to win 800 dual matches.

The Hurricanes won a pair of matches at the Brian Bealer Memorial Bear Duals at Boyertown High to reach the 800-victory plateau. Liberty joined Canon-McMillan, Waynesburg and Easton (which won its 800th last year) on the list of the state's winningest programs.

The Nazareth Area School Board on Monday got its first look at the district’s 2011-2012 budget that calls for a 1.7 percent real estate tax increase.

School administrators reminded the board several times during Monday night’s meeting that the $68,834,000 budget is only tentative and described school revenues as a constantly shifting landscape.

With a 1.7 percent rate hike, the tax millage would increase from 46.9 mils to 47.69 mils, according to district business administrator Bernadine Rishcoff. That means a home owner would pay an additional $79 -- a total of $4,769 --for every $100,000 of assessed property. The proposed tax rate could go up, depending on how much, or how little, the state provides in financial relief and on the district's investment portfolio.

Lesky and Rishcoff vow to find as many cuts in the budget as possible to balance the budget in the interest of their students' needs and in fairness to district taxpayers.

That presents a difficult situation for the district, Lesky said, because Gov. Ed Rendell won't release state education contributions to Pennsylvania's 501 school districts until March or April, meaning the district will be flying blind as to where they'll tag the tax rate "We're at a bit of a disadvantage," Lesky said.
The administration is asking the board to consider a tax increase of 2.5 percent or higher just in case that state money won't be enough to balance the budget. That rate can then be adjusted later in the budget process. The final budget must be passed by June 30, 2011.
