Today is my 28th wedding anniversary and my gift to my wife is that I won't be around much.
This one doesn't figure to be quite as hot as the Saturday I got married, thank goodness. I couldn't tell if my wife's family was sweating or crying uncontrollably with sadness 28 years ago, but there was a lot of moisture on their faces that day in the church.
I am out the door early to do the "Calling All Sports" radio show at Cedar Beach from 9-11 a.m. on 1470 AM, the Fox -- tune us in or stop by to say hello if you're out there watching the early basketball -- and then I will divide my time between Cedar Beach for the Stellar basketball tournament and the Pigapalooza event going on Coca-Cola Park. We're just in one of those busy stretches around here right now.
My wife is used to me being out of the house on our anniversary.
I like to think it'll help insure that there will be a 29th wedding anniversary next year.
Seriously, she puts up with a lot of upheaval with my schedule and understands -- for the most part -- that the life of a sports media person is not a normal life. It's a life of working late hours, weekends and holidays and the schedule always changes. No two days are alike. There's no routine to follow.
And she's also learned not to advertise the fact that she's married to me. When someone figures it out, either she gets the nastiest look, a "why doesn't your husband like my school" comment or a request for about five stories that I should be doing, usually on that person's family.
My kids long ago mastered the art of not acknowledging I am their father for the same reasons.
I remember the late, great Jack Lapos once telling me when I first started at the paper in the early 80s. that if I wanted a long, happy marriage, I should get out of the newspaper business as soon as possible and work a 9-to-5 job. I didn't listen. And Jack didn't listen to his own advice either because he loved his family and his career, too.
So far, knock on wood, my marriage has continued and we've had three kids and a granddaughter to enjoy along the way. My wife knows I love her and also what I do for a living, and I respect her work and the things that are most important to her -- like watching Oprah and Dr. Phil for instance.
And sometime in about a week or so, things will slow down and we'll get to chat and catch up ... and then lunch will roll around and we'll both be off to the races again.
