Moravian's quest for D-III Softball World Series has to wait until Monday morning

Moravian lost to Kean in its second game on Sunday, forcing the two to have to play again Monday morning in the NCAA Division III Regional at Rhode Island. The winner goes to the World Series in Wisconsin.

PROVIDENCE, RI --- The 24th-ranked Moravian College softball team suffered its first loss at the 2010 NCAA Division III Providence Regional, falling to third seeded Kean (NJ) University, 2-0, Sunday afternoon forcing the if necessary game in the tournament.


The second seeded Greyhounds and the Cougars will meet on Monday, May 17th at 10:00 a.m. with the winner advancing to the 2010 NCAA Division III World Series being hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Clarie beginning on Friday, May 21st. Moravian is looking to make its third trip to the series in seven years.


The Greyhounds had an early chance to score with runners at second and third in the bottom of the first inning but Moravian was unable to push a run home.


Kean scored the only runs of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Senior pitcher Cassie Shotwell led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and freshman Kelsey Hannan came in to pinch run. Two batters later, sophomore shortstop Alicia Banz hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Hannan ahead of the throw home. After another out, senior designated player Allison Thibault hit an RBI single to score Banz with the second run of the inning.


The Cougars had a 5-3 edge in hits. For Moravian, freshman third baseman Shannen Mohr (Slatington, PA/Parkland HS) drew a pair of walks to set the Greyhound single season record with 35 walks this spring.


Shotwell earned the win for Kean, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out three batters. Junior Elizabeth Python (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman HS) falls to 6-3 for Moravian after giving up two runs on five hits and two walks after striking out five batters. Python entered the game after freshman Alyssa Fegely (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) walked the opening two batters of the game.
