Liberty High School football coach Tim Moncman resigns

Liberty High School football coach Tim Moncman is stepping down effectively immediately, he announced in an e-mail today.

Moncman just completed his 11th season as the Hurricanes coach with a 88-36 career record.

He is resigning to "focus on the people that matter most to me and give them the time commitment they deserve," he said -- his wife Kim, his 7-year-old daughter Taylor and his 4-year-old son A.J.

His 4-year-old son, A.J., was born with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis, a degenerative eye disease that causes blindness. A.J. starts kindergarten this fall, and his transition to a large school environment "will take a total team effort by my family for him to be successful," Moncman's e-mail says.

"My wife has been a godsend throughout the entire time I have coached at Liberty, making a great deal of sacrifices to ensure my son gets all the therapy and support he needs for his disability," he said. "Kindergarten will be a very exciting time for all of us, but will present the entire family with some difficult challenges."

"I would like to thank the administration, assistant coaches and players that have made this program one of the most successful in the state," his e-mail says.

Moncman previously was head coach at Southern Lehigh High School. He played linebacker for the Freedom High School and Lafayette College football teams.

He and his wife plan to spend more time raising money for The Foundation for Retinal Research to help children with diseases like their son's.
