Lafayette College reaches Patriot League men's basketball final

Junior center Jared Mintz hit a turnaround jumper with 35 seconds left and added two free throws with 5.7 seconds to go as Lafayette held off Holy Cross, 66-63, in the Patriot League men's basketball semifinals at Kirby Sports Center.

Lafayette advances to meet the winner of tonight's American at Lehigh game. If American wins, Lafayette will be home at 4:45 Friday on ESPN2. If top-seeded Lehigh wins, Lafayette will visit Stabler Arena, also at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

Jim Mower led Lafayette with 17 points, Ryan Willen had 15 and Mintz scored 14 to go along with five rebounds and four assists.

R.J. Evans topped Holy Cross with 21 points.

Lafayette led 55-45 with 11:32 to go before Holy Cross went on a 12-0 run. The teams went back and forth until Mike Cavataio put the Crusaders ahead for the last time at 63-62 with a putback with 56 seconds left. Then Mintz hit his big shot.

Ironically, Lafayette was picked for last in the league and Holy Cross for first in the league's Patriot League preseason poll.
