Once upon a time, high school basketball on the radio was a tradition around here.
They tell me it was quite popular in the 1950s and 60s for people to gather around the radio to listen to the big games live.
Even growing up in the 70s I remember listening to Al Raber and Billy Bickel do the big games if I couldn't get there myself with my family.
I remember being in my bedroom and listening to Easton-Northampton in the 1972 state semifinals from the Penn Palestra for example on AM 1470, which was WKAP back then. Now it's 1470 The Fox and that's where I do our Saturday morning show. Matter of fact, I used to keep a scoresheet while listening to the radio games. What a nerd I was, but now I do that same scoresheet at each game for a living.
Of course, now there's plenty of live TV coverage and games on the radio around here are obsolete, but I bet some people still miss it -- especially if they're in their cars or trying to catch a score while at another game.
It's good to hear basketball on the radio still lives somewhere, in Schuylkill County. I don't know what the cable TV situation is up there and maybe the fans don't get the TV broadcasts live as we do down here.
My guess is that radio broadcasts are well-listened to up there and draw strong sponsorship support. Here's a list of games they're doing this week in case you're in their range.
