A week off left the Central Catholic girls basketball team's offense a step slow this afternoon.
The Vikettes brought their typical defensive heat to Parkland High School, however, keeping their season alive.
Central Catholic forced 30 turnovers and allowed just four first-half points, cruising to a 36-22 win over Shamokin in a PIAA Class 3A first-round state game. The District 11-champion Vikettes (26-2 overall) will face the winner of today's game between District 2 No. 1 Abington Heights and District 3 No. 4 Palmyra in a Wednesday second-round game at a site and time to be determined.
Central Catholic went 12:34 without a field goal after opening a 10-0 lead but was never threatened by Shamokin (19-7), District 4's No. 2 qualifier. The Vikettes put the game away with a 12-2 third-quarter run, opening a 25-8 advantage.
Colleen Nosovitch scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Central Catholic. Kerry Kinek added nine points and Lizzy Straccia scored six.
