From Keith Groller

Jeff Jones passed along a note this morning that the alumni basketball event scheduled for Saturday night at Whitehall has been postponed until Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the current Zephyrs have to feel good about themselves after their solid 45-30 win over Northampton Friday night.

A nice-sized crowd and a RCN4 television audience had to be impressed with the Zephyrs overall quickness.

I made one last stop at the Northampton refreshment stand (thanks for the hot dogs and slice of pizza) on my way out the door and Landon Small, a K-Kid player, stopped by and said that Javier Rivera (No. 2 below) was the fastest kid he has ever played against. Certainly, the bigger and slower Konkrete Kids were no match once Rivera and Co. cranked up the tempo.

The Zephs have built one of the most successful traditions in local sports by playing slowdown, methodical basketball and there were points when Whitehall did control the ball and use the clock on Friday night.

But these guys are fast and speed is going to be the Zephs' weapon of choice as they go through this Lehigh Valley Conference season.

This is not a very big team and Jones said the team hasn't shot the ball especially well, so it's going to have to extend the floor and make it an uptempo game.

The Zephs lost to Easton and Hazleton before winning Friday night to get to 2-2. It's an experienced team that was expected to do well and there's no reason to change those expectations at this point.

After what happened around the rest of the LVC on Friday night, it's becoming clearer to me that the only team head and shoulders above the rest is Liberty.

Nazareth whips Parkland, Freedom beats Easton and Emmaus falls to Allen and I'm left with the conclusion that you've got Liberty on top and then you have six to eight teams bunched together on the next rung of the ladder.

That makes for interesting results and competitive games almost every time the LVC has a full card.

Tuesday's games in the LVC:

Allen at Central Catholic (8)
Freedom at Bethlehem Catholic (7:30)
Dieruff at Emmaus (7:30)
Easton at Liberty (7:30)
Nazareth at Whitehall (7:30)
Northampton at Parkland (7:30)

And don't forget on Sunday afternoon at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Freedom is playing Holy Reemer, a team that features a legit 7-footer according to Freedom coach Joe Stellato.
