Steve “Mr. Movie” Friedman died in his sleep Monday morning. He was last heard on WPHT Saturday night. Friedman would have turned 62 next month.
The last few years, Friedman battled kidney disease and underwent dialysis three times a week.
Friedman’s weekly Saturday night show aired for 28 years on WPHT 1210-AM. For the last four years, he shared airtime on the Remember When show before his own show.
Steve Ross, who co-hosted Remember When with Friedman and Jim Murray said in a phone conversation, “There were times that Steve was wracked in pain, but it never came across over the air. He used “Microphone Therapy.” He would walk into the studio in obvious discomfort, but as soon as he got behind the microphone, he was ok.”
Ross said that Friedman, who did his final show two nights ago, did not seem worse than he has been the last few months.
“It was particularly painful for him the last few months, but he lived for his show.”
Ross added, “I’m just glad I got to hug him.” (Friedman ended his show by saying “Go out and hug somebody.”)
Friedman, also appeared on Channel 10’s “Time Out” program.
Friedman is survived by his wife, Michel and daughter, Darragh.
