FROM KEITH GROLLER
For the record, Dieruff defeated Allen 7-0 on Saturday afternoon in the alumni powderpuff football game at J. Birney Crum Stadium.
And, also for the record, Angie Butler scored the game's only touchdown for the Huskies.
But everyone who was involved in the event was a winner for helping to raise $5,007 for the Lustgarden Foundation, an oganization dedicated to the fight against pancreatic cancer. The target was $5,000.
The inspiration for the game was the late Josette Burton-Walton, a 1988 Allen High graduate who died in 2010 at the age of 39.
All of the players in the game were Allen and Dieruff alums from the period of 1984-90.
"It was awesome," said event organizer Jennifer Glose. "It was really, really something. Everybody was great. There was just so much going on and everybody had a good time."
Glose said it was difficult to assess the crowd, but estimated that at least 500 people were there.
One of the highlights was the players standing arm-in-arm on the field with Allen and Dieruff intertwined.
"Many people told me that was the coolest thing," Glose said. "We stood in one long line, in unison, with our arms around each other."
Glose said that she got nothing but positive feedback from what was her senior class project at Cedar Crest College.
