Spartans power past Panthers

http://www.d11football.com/news/12/08/spartans-power-past-panthers/ It was a battle of titans in Philadelphia as Wyomissing and Imhotep Charter met at Benjamin L. Johnston Stadium. The winner earns a place on the sidelines opposite Aliquippa Saturday afternoon. Aliquippa, the WPIAL champion, defeated Richland 37-21 on Friday night and will meet Wyomissing after they defeated Imhotep Charter 35-13, in a PIAA Class 2A Semifinal game. It was a slugfest as the game began. Wyomissing (15-0) got the ball first to start the game, but only reached the Imhotep 42 yard line then punted. The Panthers had a nice drive of their own going until they turned the ball over on downs inside the Wyomissing 6 yard line, when Wyomissing running back/linebacker Alex Anzalone stopped running back David Williams 1 yard short of a first down. The Spartans then drove for their first score of the game, helped by an Anzalone 58 yard run to the Imhotep 11 yard line. The next play, Spartan running back Brandon Gonzalez (2 carries, 12 yards) weaved 11 yards to paydirt. Spartans 6-0. On the Imhotep’s (13-1) next possession, running back David Williams did most of the work, toting the ball 3 times for 56 yards, including a 50 yard touchdown scamper. Imhotep took a 7-6 lead. Wyomissing returned the favor halfway thru the second quarter, when Spartans quarterback threw a 46 yard pass to wide receiver Gerald Burns for the go ahead touchdown. Wyomissing 14-7. The Spartans seemed to take control of the game with less than a minute before halftime. Unger (5 for 7, 118) tossed a 50 yard bomb to wide receiver Joseph Cacchione to the Panther 3 yard line. The next play, Notre Dame-commit Anzalone (18 rushes, 158 yards) scored from 3 yards out. Wyomissing 21-7 at the half. The Panthers tried to keep the game close as they got the ball to start the second half. Highly recruited David Williams (22 carries, 140 yards) carried 3 times for 29 yards, then running back DeAndre Scott (4 rushes, 63 yards) burst 44 yards down the right sideline for the score. Wyomissing 21-13. Wyomissing wouldn’t be outdone. Near the end of the third quarter, running back Justin Causa found paydirt on an 11 yard run., for a 28-13 lead.
