Lehigh football: The good and not so good on the way to Lynchburg, Va.

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER A little late with our weekly "Good and Not So Good" segment on Lehigh football. The Mountain Hawks are 3-0 and ranked No. 13 in the country in one FCS poll and No. 16 in the other, but I still think those rankings are based much more on what Lehigh did last season than what they have done so far this season. They have an opportunity to make a statement on Saturday night in Lynchburg, Va., where they will face a Liberty University team that may be 0-3, but has played very good competition so far, including a 20-17 Week 1 loss to Wake Forest. Looking back at last week's win over Princeton, here's the good and not so good: THE GOOD 1. No turnovers by the offense. After four interceptions in the first two games, there were no picks among the season-high 34 attempts thrown by Mike Colvin against Princeton. It was also Colvin's highest passing total of the season -- 276 yards. He effectively spread the ball around to eight different receivers. 2. No sacks allowed by the offensive line. The offensive line, which has seen more than its share of changes through three games, did an outstanding job protecting Colvin. 3. The defense was spectacular in the first half and stout in the second half. We don't know how good Princeton's offense will turn out to be. If the Tigers offense turns out to be impressive, we will look back at this effort in even more glowing terms. Lehigh's defense couldn't have been better in the first half, allowing just two first downs and 40 yards of offense. It doesn't get any better than that at this level. Plus, the defense was superb again after Princeton got the ball at its own 41 with 3:15 remaining and Lehigh ahead only by three. The Tigers went three-and-out, punted to Lehigh with 2:38 remaining and never got the ball back. THE NOT SO GOOD 1. Three muffed punts, including two that were lost. There has been a change at the punt return position this week after Jason Suggs had problems last week. Suggs is a good player, but this move had to be made until he regains his confidence level on fielding punts, especially with Liberty expected to be a hostile environment on Saturday night. Marcus Dormevil will be handling the punts in Lynchburg. 2. Too many penalties. Lehigh was handcuffed by poor field position and difficult down-and-distance situations and part of the reason was too many penalties -- five for 36 yards in the second half 3. Inconsistent offense. Part of it was the conservative game plan prompted by the poor field position, but Lehigh has got to find a way to move the football better than it did in the second half. Just four first downs in a half is unacceptable for this team and they had just two over the first six possessions.
