Lehigh Valley Conference East girls, Mountain Valley Conference boys victorious in Via All-Star Basketball Classic

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

The senior guard from Liberty High School seemed to have the time of her life today when she scored 17 points to spark the Lehigh Valley Conference East girls to a 94-66 rout of the Mountain Valley Conference in the 37th annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic at Northampton Community College.

Quindell Brice of Pocono Mountain West, the Via Boys Player of the Year, poured in 21 points to spark the Mountain Valley Conference boys to a 92-88 victory over the Lehigh Valley Conference East.

"It definitely was a lot of fun," Hilliard said. "A lot of the girls (on her team) wore different colored jerseys during the season but we all had the same jerseys on (Saturday). We played as a team."

Jody Chickey of Liberty added 14 points for the LVC girls. J.J. Hilliard of Liberty, C.J.'s twin sister, and Christine Flannery of Nazareth added 12 points each.

"I'm always happy for my sister," C.J. Hilliard said.

C.J. will play at Division III Gwynedd-Mercy next season while J.J. will continue her basketball career at Division II Lock Haven. Chickey will take her game to Division I Mount St. Mary's.

Lehigh Valley East had its hands full for the first 25 minutes. The Mountain Valley squad took its final lead, 50-49, on a putback by Kelecia Harris of Pleasant Valley with 15:38 remaining. Harris finished with a game-high 21 points.

Lehigh Valley East embarked on a 16-2 run to take command at 65-52. The Mountain Valley never got closer than eight.

"A lot of the girls just didn't want to lose their last high school game," C.J. Hilliard said. "We were obviously enemies during the season but we're all friends now. We wanted to have fun and make sure we got the win."

Boys game

Caleb Knudsen of Pius X returned to his Mountain Valley Conference roots in the boys game. Knudsen transferred from Pleasant Valley to Pius X before his junior season. He contributed eight points for the Mountain Valley today.

"Being from Pleasant Valley, I always had a little relationship with the MVC," Knudsen said, "but this experience made it even stronger."

Jok Osiyo of Pocono Mountain East added 16 points for the MVC including two spectacular dunks. Johnathan Amoroso of Pocono Mountain West added 13 points.

"We had a lot of talent," Knudsen said. "Usually the LVC teams disrespect the MVC. We took it to them this time. We showed that we weren't here to mess around."

Knudsen is considering playing basketball at Division II schools Mount Olive (N.C.) and Cheyney as well as several prep schools.

"(Pius assistant coach) Dallas Comegys is real close friends with the Cheyney coach (Dominique Stephens)," Knudsen said. "He's been good to me. I'd definitely think about it if they gave me a good offer."

Lincoln Holley of Easton led the LVC East with 19 points. Jarrod Dilts of Freedom added 15 followed by Noel Hightower of Easton and Joe Lococo of Freedom, the Express-Times Player of the Year, with 14 each.

Colonial League boys, girls lose tight games to Lehigh Valley Conference West in Via All-Star Basketball Classic

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/03/colonial_boys_girls_lose_tight.htmlhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Relishing their role as scrappy underdogs, the girls and boys teams representing the Colonial League put a scare into their taller Lehigh Valley Conference West Division opposition at the 37th annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic at Northampton Community College this morning.

The Colonial girls led in the final minute before losing 81-77 in the opener and the boys lost 114-106 in race horse-paced games that entertained the Spartan Center crowd.

Brittany Pierzga of Notre Dame scored 12 of her 13 points in the first half and Kelsey Hay of Palmerton scored 12 of her 13 in the second half to lead the Colonial girls.

Aimee Oertner of Northern Lehigh led the Colonial League squad with six rebounds and two blocks and Hay pulled down five rebounds but LVC West won the battle of the boards, 42-28.

Dynamic duo Leah Horton of Emmaus and Via Player of the Year Kerry Kinek of Central Catholic each scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead LVC West. Also, with 14 points and seven rebounds, point guard Kayla Bet of Whitehall was one of LVC West's key players.

She was the catalyst at crunch time with four assists late in the game.

"My game is to distribute the ball and the girls I played with today have great post-up moves," Bet said. "When we went into halftime trailing (36-32), we decided we needed to play more physical in the second half, instead of just running up and down trading baskets."

Hay's layup gave the Colonial its largest lead at 43-38 but the LVC West caught up at 49-49 on a driving layup by Horton of Emmaus.

The Colonial team regained the lead at 70-69 on a deep three-point shot by guard Julia Nemeth of Southern Lehigh and led 77-76 with 48 seconds remaining. However, LVC West went inside to Horton for a layup and a free throw by Bet and two free throws by Kinek in the final 13 seconds put the game out of reach.

"The coaches told us to play up-tempo and show them what we've got," Hay said. "We knew we could give them a tough game if we hustled and played hard. The whole experience was fun. Even though we only had two practices, we worked well together as a team because we've all played in AAU and we know what everybody can do."

Oertner said she is not used to facing players as tall and strong as Horton and Kinek in the Colonial League.

"It was a challenge, but we held our own and made it a great game," said Oertner, who's headed to the U.S. Military Academy. "We are proud of the way we played. It's a great way to finish our high school careers."

Both teams forced turnovers. The LVC West was guilty of 18 turnovers while the Colonial team coughed the ball up 16 times. Ultimately, missing 15 free throws ended up hurting the Colonial team.

Boys game

The Colonial League boys fell behind 60-40 by halftime but did not give up, outscoring LVC West 66-54 in the second half.

"The first half was embarrassing," Notre Dame's Connor Hughes said. "We didn't want to go out that way. We stepped it up and pressured the ball in the second half. We caught up (at 90-90 with four minutes left) but they killed us off the boards."

LVC West also connected six times from 3-point range.

D.J. Brown of Allen led Lehigh Valley West with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Four other players scored in double figures for the winners, forward Christopher Moran of Whitehall with 17, guard Seth Stoudt of Central Catholic with 15, guard Nick Melosky of Whitehall with 13 and Parkland guard Zach Muhr with 12.

The Colonial team, coached by Jason Weaver of Salisbury, was led by hot shooting guard Kerry Reider of Bangor, who scored 25 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Colonial League were Salisbury forward Lloyd Irons with 16, Notre Dame guard Alex Gregg with 14 and Salisbury guard Brent Maron with 14.

"We could have won," said Notre Dame coach Pat Boyle, a Colonial League assistant, "but the best thing is everyone enjoyed the competition and we helped a worthy cause."

Justin Ringland of Bangor, who scored eight points, was named to the Via All-Star Boys Team of the Year at Wednesday evening's Via banquet.

The Via all-star games were played college-style with 20-minute halves and three referees at Northampton's modern gym which opened in 2006.

The annual basketball classic raises funds for Via of the Lehigh Valley's programs for adults and children with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Among Via's programs are endeavors to provide training for employment and helping people obtain housing.

TV NEWS ON MARCH 31

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/03/digital-digest-adam-12-final-season-dvd.htmlhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Happy Saturday and welcome to Digital Digest! We've got all of your regular features here this week, of course (though not a whole lot of news, it has been slow this week), and we've also got a review of Shout! Factory's upcoming release of Adam-12 - The Final Season! Let's get rolling!

DIGITAL NEWS

News on the DVD front has been excruciatingly slow this week, but there was one announcement from Lionsgate regarding a new release of the series House of Payne. House of Payne - Volume Nine, which has been "on again, off again" on the schedule, is now "on again" with a scheduled release date set for June 19. Will this change again? We don't know, but hopefully, for the sake of fans, this day will be the actual release date.

Sony is continuing their manufacture-on-demand DVDs (of course, don't forget about Tuesday's releases of Benson - The Complete Second Season and Brothers - The Complete Series) with the series 10 Items or Less. On May 1, they will be releasing 10 Items or Less - The Complete Second Season, but only as a manufacture-on-demand product. It isn't available to pre-order just yet, but you can read more about the release here.

UPCOMING WEEK PREVIEW

Tuesday (April 2) has several DVD releases to offer. Shout! Factory continues their releases of Designing Women with their release of Designing Women - The Complete Sixth Season. You can read our review of this set here. CBS Home Entertainment brings an older (and somewhat forgotten) sitcom to DVD for the first time with their release of Bob - The Complete Series. You can read our review here. If you are looking for new releases of Carsey-Werner series from Mill Creek, they have (literally) tons of them, with 3rd Rock from the Sun - The Complete Season Three, 3rd Rock from the Sun - The Complete Season Four, Roseanne - The Complete Third Season, Roseanne - The Complete Fourth Season, That '70s Show - Season Three, and That '70s Show - Season Four. We have not received these yet for review, but while we are mentioning these, we should mention that we have received a review copy of That '70s Show - Season One (Blu-ray), which was released a little over a week ago, and we will have a review of that set soon (as well as these new releases for Tuesday). If you're in the mood for manufacture-on-demand products, Sony brings some new sitcoms to DVD through those means on Tuesday with their release of Benson - The Complete Second Season and Brothers - The Complete Series. There certainly is something for everybody on Tuesday!

BLOG FEATURE REVIEW

Blog DVD Review: Adam-12 - The Final Season (Shout! Factory, $34.93)
by skees53

It's time to ride along with Officer Reed (Kent McCord) and Malloy (Martin Milner) one last time with Shout! Factory's release of the seventh season of the iconic police drama Adam-12, with Adam-12 - The Final Season. The final 24 episodes of the classic series, from the 1974 to 1975 season. A lot has changed for these officers since the first season, but they're still out there helping the citizens of Los Angeles, and also helping to prevent crime.

The season begins with the two-part episode "Camp," where a boy seeks independence from his mother (and in turn finds himself in trouble with the law). In "Team Work," Malloy and Reed get suspicious after seeing the same witness and tow truck driver at two different accident scenes. A gang is robbing pizza delivery boys in "Roll Call." In "Suspect Number One," Malloy gets a request from an ex-con who just wants to go back to prison. A holdup goes wrong, leaving two robbers on the roof of a shopping center, in "Point of View."

In "Lady Beware," Malloy and Reed are on the search for a rapist of teen girls. Reed and Malloy are on the hunt for a missing young girl in "Excessive Force." In "Alcohol," the latest arrest by Reed and Malloy is a happy drunk who seems to be entertaining. Reed has trouble getting a credit card in "Credit Risk." It is a happy holiday for everybody, except for Reed and Malloy, in "Christmas." Malloy encounters a young man using the machines at a laundromat to dry marijuana in "Pot Shot."

Reed and Malloy are following the path of a car theft ring in "Grand Theft Auto." In "Victim of the Crime," Reed gets blamed when a thief escapes from a shop. A new recruit has a stuttering problem in "Pressure Point," and it could have more serious problems than expected when he tries to hide it. Reed and Malloy take their significant others on a double date in "Ladies' Night." In "Citizen With a Gun," a homeowner decides to take advantage of his right to own a gun to protect himself, but owning that gun may have consequences when he comes close to accidentally shooting a police officer. Reed and Malloy are after a horse thief in "Follow Up."

Reed and Malloy have to find a man who may be planning to kill himself in "Suicide." In "Operation Action," Malloy is missing, and Reed is going to do whatever it takes to find out where he is. A new recruit is taking serious risks to apprehend suspects in "Gus Corbin." In "Dana Hall," a female officer is out to prove that she can do anything that a man can do on the job. The series ends with the two-part final episode (one of the few police dramas of the era to actually have a proper final episode), "Something Worth Dying For," where Reed and Malloy may be going their separate ways after some changes.

It appears that the episodes on the set are unedited. Runtimes are as follows:

Disc 1:
1. "Camp (Part 1)" (24:56)
2. "Camp (Part 2)" (24:55)
3. "Team Work" (24:31)
4. "Roll Call" (24:30)
5. "Suspect Number One" (24:30)
6. "Point of View" (24:31)

Disc 2:
7. "Lady Beware" (25:11)
8. "Excessive Force" (24:27)
9. "Alcohol" (24:55)
10. "Credit Risk" (24:54)
11. "Christmas" (25:10)
12. "Pot Shot" (24:29)

Disc 3:
13. "Grand Theft Auto" (25:11)
14. "Victim of the Crime" (25:08)
15. "Ladies' Night" (25:30)
16. "Pressure Point" (24:31)
17. "Citizen with a Gun" (25:09)
18. "Follow Up" (24:31)

Disc 4:
19. "Suicide" (24:55)
20. "Operation Action" (25:26)
21. "Gus Corbin" (25:23)
22. "Dana Hall" (25:25)
23. "Something Worth Dying For (Part 1)" (25:29)
24. "Something Worth Dying For (Part 2)" (25:29)

The DVD set is packaged just like the sixth season, with the DVDs in a standard Viva case. To recap all of it, season one was released in a huge box with two standard Amaray cases (only two discs, but both were double-sided), seasons 2-5 were released in slimcases, and the final two seasons (6 and 7) have been released in Viva cases. The cover has a photo of Reed and Malloy, in front of what (I think) is LAPD headquarters, though I don't know that is what it is for certain. On the back, there is a brief description of the season, two photos from the series, and for some reason, quite a bit of blank space... but it isn't a huge deal. Inside the case, there are four discs, each containing six episodes. The disc artwork contains a different black and white photo on each disc. Complete episode descriptions and original airdates are printed inside the case. However, there are some issues with the episode guide inside the case, as it is plagued with titles which I believe are wrong, improperly abbreviated, misspelled, and some of the episodes are even listed in the wrong order. The episodes as listed on the menu appear to be the most "correct," but certainly, the episode guide inside the case will give you an idea of what is on each disc.

Not one thing has changed about the menus since the previous season. The main menu is designed like a police radio, with buttons for Play All and Episodes. The theme song plays in the background on the main menu. Upon selecting Episodes, you get another menu which lists the episodes. Each episode plays immediately upon selecting it. Chapters are placed throughout each episode.

The video and audio quality of the set is, generally speaking, excellent. You'll find a bit of grain and debris here and there, but even that is significantly lessened from the previous releases. I don't think anybody will be the slightest bit disappointed with the video quality. The audio is great too, and generally loud and clear. Unfortunately, the episodes are not closed-captioned.

The set contains no special features at all. It would have been nice to have included some sort of interview retrospective or something along those lines since, after all, this is the final season of the series.

We don't get to say this too much lately, because most series have either been completed long ago or were just abandoned early on, but we have finally seen this series completed on DVD! It took a long time, and there were plenty of bumps along the road (particularly with Universal giving up on the series after just one season), but sure enough, we have all of the episodes on DVD now, and the releases really haven't had any major issues of concern, although it would be nice to see a re-release of the first season (which Universal did a terrible job with, primarily by using double-sided discs which had a very high failure rate). I think that these season sets really do close the book on this series, because a complete series set probably couldn't be much of an improvement on what is here, and this series is not really appropriate to release on Blu-ray. So, if you are a fan of this series, or just a fan of police dramas in general, you should pick up these DVDs, all seven seasons. It doesn't matter which season you start with. Basically, they are all equally enjoyable.

CLICK OF THE WEEK

The Official Kent McCord Home Page - Lately, our Click of the Week has often been closely related to upcoming DVD releases or DVDs which we have recently reviewed, and we are doing this yet again today, sort of. But instead of just choosing a website about Adam-12 (there is at least decent one out there which we will likely feature at a later date), we instead chose to feature the official website of Kent McCord, one of the stars of the classic series.

The website is much like many other celebrity websites out there, although naturally, it includes more of a full account of McCord's early life all the way up through the present day, giving a full picture of his life. But my favorite part of the website is the wealth of first-hand artifacts which he provides from his career. There are plenty of photos and memorabilia featured from Adam-12, of course, but you'll also find a page about his time on the series Galactica 1980. There are also many photo memories available on the site from his appearances on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. He even has a full page, complete with photos and an article, dedicated to a rare 1989 TNN made-for-TV movie Nashville Beat, which was special because in the movie, he played a cop partnered with another cop played by Martin Milner (I've never seen the movie, but I'm still confident that he always belonged in Los Angeles anyway). There is also a series of interesting correspondence which he has had with those he has worked with over the years. All of this isn't to say that this is a one-stop shop for everything that you need to know about Kent McCord or Adam-12, but you will certainly find a lot of interesting and unique artifacts on this website, all of which make it worthy of being Click of the Week.

Notre Dame freshman beats Southern Lehigh in Colonial League softball

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Notre Dame freshman pitcher Gianna Koehler, who got an unexpected start when expected starter Sara Gaffney fell ill earlier in the day, stopped Southern Lehigh on five hits and the Crusaders made enough defensive plays behin her to post a 5-3 win over the Spartans on Friday afternoon at Green Pond.

Koehler struck out one and worked around six walks to post her first Colonial League victory.

Southern Lehigh (1-3 overall, 1-1 CL) had baserunners in every inning but the second, but didn't score until the seventh when Katie Tankred (2-for-3) doubled in two and scored on an error.

With runners at first and third and two out, Shelby Drissel tried to steal to get in scoring position but was thrown out by freshman catcher Kelsey Simpkins for the game's final out.

Five different girls had hits for the Crusaders, including freshmen Faith Carson and Megan Knarr who came off the bench to deliver a triple and a double respectively in the bottom of the sixth to pick up an important insurance run.

Knarr, by the way, is the daughter of Jeff Knarr, a longtime area football coach who is now the head coach at King's College.

Notre Dame improved to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the league.

Bethlehem, PA --From the award-winning producers of Hollywood on Hamilton: Remembering Hess’s and Bethlehem Steel: The People Who Built America, comes IronPigs: Fan-tastic, a documentary that explores the magic surrounding the popular Minor League Baseball team that has captured the hearts of fans throughout the Lehigh Valley.

In this 60-minute program, viewers take a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the entire organization—from managers and players, to the fans who love them, and the staff members who pull it all together. The documentary also explores how the IronPigs’ excitement spreads beyond Coca-Cola Park in Allentown to impact economic development throughout the Lehigh Valley.

“We’re so excited to share the finished product with our community,” said Amy Burkett, PBS39 Television Station Manager and executive producer. "We consider it a gift to our region to wrap up the first five years of IronPigs baseball in a beautiful bow highlighting an incredible season in this program.”

IronPigs: Fan-tastic producer/writer Laura McHugh added, “In this documentary, we wanted to explore the magic that makes the Lehigh Valley IronPigs fantastic. We found fans eager to share their stories and help us understand how this team has united our community and given the Lehigh Valley a team to call its own. I had an incredible opportunity to interview so many fans and players during the 2011 season and consider it an honor to share their stories in this documentary.”

Since opening Coca-Cola Park in 2008, the IronPigs have drawn more than 2.5 million people from near and far to their 10,000-person capacity, $50 million dollar stadium. Affordable ticket prices, creative promotions and family-friendly entertainment have all played a part in quickly making the IronPigs and Coca-Cola Park one of the Lehigh Valley’s biggest attractions.

With new Manager and Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg at the helm, the team recorded its first winning season in 2011 and made the team’s first playoff appearance.

But the team has done more than bring America’s favorite pastime to the Lehigh Valley. Tourism and economic development officials report the team has made a significant economic impact on the region. Each year, about 50,000 people from out-of-town come to Coca-Cola Park, where they spend approximately $2 million dollars inside and outside of this award-winning stadium. They also purchase supplies from area vendors, support local charities, and paved the way for additional commercial development near Airport Road in Allentown.

"Lehigh Valley residents should be proud that visitors are drawn to the IronPigs and the Coca-Cola Park experience," said Michael Stershic, President of Discover Lehigh Valley. "The stellar reputation of the team, the quality of place, and the excellent game-day experience orchestrated by the IronPigs staff is second to none. That's why we are drawing record crowds."

The PBS39 staff interviewed more than 100 people for this program and shot nearly 40 hours of footage. Some key interviews include: Manager Ryne Sandberg, fan favorite Rich Thompson, and General Manager Kurt Landes.

This production would not have been possible without the financial support of Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley and Luther Crest.

Producing this documentary took months of hard work by a dedicated PBS39 staff. Produced by PBS39’s Emmy award-winning production team including:

Amy Burkett - Executive Producer

Laura McHugh - Producer/Writer

IronPigs documentary on PBS hits a home run

http://www.mcall.com/sports/columnists/groller/mc-ironpigs-documentary-0329-20120329,0,724197.columnhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

FROM KEITH GROLLER

PBS39 reporter and producer Laura McHugh said her documentary on the Lehigh Valley IronPigs encountered a change of direction as the 2011 baseball season unfolded.

"We started out this documentary with the idea being 'How does a losing team make themselves the most visited stadium in all of minor league baseball?' " McHugh said. "Then here we are in July going 'Oh my goodness, they really might make it to the playoffs?' So, one of the most difficult things for us was throwing out our original plan and really incorporating the 2011 season."

It worked out beautifully because the documentary, called "IronPigs: Fan-tastic," neatly stitches together the story of a passionate, devoted fan base with the team's surprising rise to playoff glory last summer.

The documentary will debut at Coca-Cola Park at 7 Wednesday night, on the eve of the 2012 opener. The hour-long program will be shown on the stadium's giant scoreboard screen following the IronPigs workout and batting session, which is set to run from 5-6:30 p.m

Liberty wins Bethlehem's battle of unbeatens; knocks off Becahi 5-4 on 3-run homer in the 7th

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Mariah Kondravy's three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning carried Liberty to a 5-4 win over Bethlehem Catholic on Thursday in the Lehigh Valley Conference softball opener for both teams.

Becahi, the defending league champs and a near unanimous pick to win the league again this spring, took a 4-2 lead on the top of the seventh on Marissa Merriman's home run.

It looked like the Golden Hawks, who had two no-hitters in their first three games, would improve to 4-0.

But it didn't happen. Instead, Liberty improved to 3-0.

Mariah2

With one out, Alyshia Dellatore reached on an infield single and Lauren Epsaro followed by reaching on an error to put runners on first and second.

Kondravy, who had an RBI single in the first and a run-scoring triple in the fifth, jumped at the first pitch and hit a line drive about five yards inside the right-field line. It kept going and going.

Dellatore and Epsaro scored and Kondravy raced around the bases for the game-winner.

"It's a really good feeling because this is one of our biggest rivals," Kondravy (pictured at right) said. "The first pitch was a good pitch to hit, so I went with it."

Sports Media Weekly Podcast No. 98- Dave O’Brien, ESPN

http://sportsmediajournal.com/http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

We are getting ever closer to our 100th edition of the Sports Media Weekly Podcast.

On today’s 98th edition Ken Fang of Fangs Bites and I open up by looking at lower ratings for CBS and Turner Sports’ coverage of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament. Ken feels not having a team like Duke still in the hunt and no teams from the west coast may have hampered the networks’ ratings.

We then look at the news this week that Dana Jacobsen is leaving ESPN. Jacobsen served as a SportsCenter anchor as well as co-host of ESPN2′s Cold Pizza/First Take.

Ken and I then examine the public relations nightmare that fell upon Major League Baseball and the MLB Network for not promoting and airing live the first two games of the regular season between the Mariners and Athletics from Japan. MLB Network tape delayed the opener on Tuesday before shifting gears and airing this morning’s game live.

We wrap our news segment by looking at reports that Fox Sports may be looking at developing an all-sports network to compete with ESPN and NBC Sports Network.

Our guest this week is Dave O’Brien, lead women’s college basketball voice at ESPN. I had the opportunity to speak with Dave while at the NCAA Women’s Regional Tournament in Kingston, RI. Dave speaks to us about his preparation for the women’s tournament and how he works well with analyst Doris Burke and reporters Holly Rowe and Rebecca Lobo. O’Brien also goes into his role as the voice for Wednesday Night Baseball on ESPN and as the radio voice of the Boston Red Sox.

On Press Row- NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament, Kingston, RI

http://sportsmediajournal.com/http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

KINGSTON, RI- When a big event such as the NCAA Basketball Tounemanet comes to town, conventional thinking is that the NCAA has total control over all parts of the operation. But when it comes to managing the local, regional, and national media contingent covering the event, the NCAA is relatively hands off. That responsibility falls upon the educational institution hosting the tournament.

The University of Rhode Island (URI) and its sports information department were given the task to organize the media needs of those attending the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Regional in Kingston, RI. In only his third month on the job, URI Coordinator of Sports Communications Shane Donaldson was tapped to be the point man for all media needs.

“This event was so big…so keeping it organized was a challenge for me.” said Donaldson.

Even though requests for media credentials for the women’s tournament do not normally rival those of the men’s championship, a regional featuring four teams attracts more media attention than a typical URI men’s or women’s game. Donaldson said more than 160 credentials were issued for the two-day tournament, 96 of which were to reporters and photographers.

“For a typical men’s game total media is around 30-40 on a given night, so you’re talking more than double than what we typically have.” said Donaldson.

Special attention is given to ESPN, which has exculsive television rights to telecast the women’s tournament. Donaldson said the NCAA sets the number of credentials issued for the television production team, while other ESPN personnel, like those writing for ESPN.com or espnW.com, are credentialed along with other journalists. A total of 75 passes were issued to ESPN personnel.

URI’s Ryan Center, which hosted the tournament, was shut down a full two weeks leading up to the opening tip-off. The specially constructed floor needed to be installed and the customized backboard assemblies did not arrive on site until late last week.

Even though URI had control over most media needs, the NCAA required special accomodations for tournament services and staff. Parts of the lower level of the Ryan Center were transformed to handle operations not typically required during the URI basketball season.

A section under the north stands of the Ryan Center, which is typically used as a storage garage, was converted as the media work room. That room had approximately 75 seats for journalists and photographers. The normal media work room was taken over by ESPN for its interview needs, while the regular season URI interview area served staff coordinating NCAA’s statistics and media relations . The URI football locker room, which is also located in the Ryan Center, was transformed as the general interview room.

On the court URI had a total of three media locations totaling 105 seats. Most of the seats were dedicated to media, with just over 20 set aside for representatives of the schools and the leagues they represent. ESPN occupied a total of 10 seats on press row. Photographers were issued spots under the two baskets.

Meeting the technology needs of the press was another challenge for Donaldson and URI. The school installed an extra 60 wireless internet modems just for the tournament. Each reporter was given a spefic username and password to ensure that no more that two or three users would be occupying each modem. Internet speed for me anywhere in the Ryan Center was never a problem. Ample electrical outlets were also made available for all media members.

NCAA Tournament rules played a role on how local and national radio broadcasts were handled. During the regular season, radio outlets covering URI games are located on same side of the arena as the team benches. NCAA regulations stipulate all radio broadcasts must be stationed on the side of the court opposite the benches. URI was required to install or move ISDN lines to accomodate all local and national radio broadcasts. Donaldson said those moves appeared to go off without a hitch.

The interview room was set up in a manner typical of large sporting events. The NCAA controls all aspects to how the interview room is organized and managed. No local video cameras are allowed to record press conferences. Instead video and audio feeds (both analog and HD) are made available to the electronic media wishing to record any press conference. Along with video restrictions there was also a ban on flash photography in the interview room.

As is typical for most NCAA competitions the size of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, there is never a lack of information on the teams participating or the leagues they represent. Printed statistics are made available during each television timeout and all media members have access to a dedicated NCAA statistics website.

The presence of ESPN at this event was undeniable. As is the case when any network comes to town, there appeared to be more than 75 people donning ESPN press credentials. The network implemented at least two cameras high above mid court, three on the floor, and one high near the main Ryan Center scoreboard in the southwest corner of the arena.

The announcing team of Dave O’Brien and Doris Burke were located, as usual, on the floor at mid-court across from the scorer’s table. Dial Global Radio with Dave Ryan and Ann Shatz were along side ESPN while local radio stations were set-up a row behind the national television and radio teams.

ESPN reporter Holly Rowe could be seen roaming the sidelines during the game but had an assigned seat, with a producer, at the very end of the press row behind the team benches.

My expereince at the Regional Tournament was a positive one. I was not issued a seat courtside for the Regional Semifinals but was issued a spot for Tuesday’s Regional Final. I was at the Ryan Center early enough to secure work space in the first-come, first-served media room.

Just by observing the media at the event I did hear a few complaints. Since the UConn campus is a mere 1.5 hour drive to URI the media contingent was domintated by those covering the Lady Huskies. That made the media room cramped at times and some media members did voice concern over the lack of space. Photographers, who routinely are given separate media quarters during an event as big as the NCAA Tournament, were more vocal than others about the working conditions. Photographers were also concerned about the dim lighting conditions at the Ryan Center.

Food for the media was not available at the lower level but in the arena’s Alumni Club located on the main concourse. Restroom accomodations were also restricted in the lower level so many media members were forced to navigate to restrooms located along the main concourse. To me this was not a big deal. It gave me the opportunity to explore the Ryan Center.

Donaldson said the concerns expressed to him from media members were no different than any regular season game. A large majority of the media at the tournament appeared satisfied with the accomodations at the Ryan Center. Myself included.

The one-day football camp for high school players are the primary fundraiser for the foundation, which provides financial support for brain tumor research and cancer services, offers financial and emotional support to families living with pediatric cancer, and increases awareness of the disease. LFG has raised more than $1 million since it was created in 2004.

“We could not be more excited to have Coach O’Brien volunteer to be our featured speaker,” said John Loose, LFG founder and defensive coordinator of the Lafayette College football team. “He has been successful everywhere he has been and we are sure he will have a great message for the campers and coaches.”

Prior to his appointment at Penn State in January, O'Brien served as the Offensive Coordinator of the New England Patriots, where he was instrumental in helping New England earn a 13-3 record, the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and advancing to Super Bowl XLVI last season.

A member of the Patriots' coaching staff since 2007, including the last three mentoring the quarterbacks, O'Brien has worked with some of the game's most successful and innovative coaches and players in his 19-year coaching career, including Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Randy Moss, Rob Gronkowski, Ralph Friedgen, George O'Leary and Chan Gailey.

A graduate of Brown University, O'Brien joined Belichick's staff in New England as a coaching assistant in 2007 after 14 seasons on the staffs of Georgia Tech, Maryland and Duke.

The LFG Football Camp is open to student-athletes who will be entering grades 9 through 12 this fall. During the event, athletes are divided into small groups and receive instruction in a variety of offensive and defensive skills from volunteer college coaches from around the country.

Along with the PA camp, LFG also sponsors a one-day camp at Otterbein University in Ohio, which will be held on Sunday, June 17. Registration for the camp is $33 and student-athletes can register online at www.lfgf.org.

TV NEWS ON MARCH 29

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/03/fox-summer-2012-schedule-metv-network.htmlhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

This summer, Fox heats up with a lot of reality and Gordon Ramsey: the season nine premiere of So You Think You Can Dance, the return of Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen and Masterchef, plus the premiere of Ramsay's new series Hotel Hell. Back for a ninth season, So You Think You Can Dance kicks off with a two-hour premiere Thursday, May 24 from 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT. Then the following week, on Wednesday, May 30 from 8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT, the series moves into its regular time period where it will air only once a week this season and each jam-packed two-hour show will feature awe-inspiring performances, as the contestants compete to be named America's Favorite Dancer. Additional So You Think You Can Dance schedule information to be announced. On Tuesday, May 29, Chef Ramsay returns for an all-new season of Hell's Kitchen at 8:00 PM ET/PT, followed by the season three debut of Masterchef at 9:00 PM ET/PT. Beginning Monday, June 4 at 9:00 PM ET/PT, Hell's Kitchen expands to twice per week with all-new episodes Mondays at 9:00 PM ET/PT and Tuesdays at 8:00 PM ET/PT. Next, in Hotel Hell premiering Monday, June 4 at 8:00 PM ET/PT, Ramsay will travel to San Diego, CA; Coeur D'Alene, ID; Cambridge, NY; Milford, PA; and Windsor, VT to fix horrid hotels, awful inns and just plain bad bed and breakfasts. That is all Fox has announced so far for summer. Mondays & Tuesdays with Gordon Ramsey shows and Wednesdays with So You Think You Can Dance. It is expected repeats will air Thursday-Sunday, but we're not 100%. Fox has said additional summer premiere dates and schedule information will be announced. So stay with us!
