Nazareth man burned in meth lab explosion admits cooking drugs

FROM THE MORNING CALL

A Nazareth man who was severely burned in an explosion at the methamphetamine lab in his apartment admitted Wednesday to felony drug manufacturing.

Clayton W. Rutt, 54, faces at least a mandatory minimum of two years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 2 by Northampton County Judge Paula Roscioli, according to court records.

The explosion at 121 S. Main St. occurred in October, with Rutt suffering burns to his face, chest and arms. In February, Rutt was released from the hospital, police said.

The fire was contained to one room of the apartment, police said. Inside, officers found open packages of Sudafed and propane fuel and paint thinner, all of which are ingredients used to make meth.

At the time of the explosion, police said, Rutt had been under investigation for more than a year for meth production.
