The Lehigh Valley's championship Carpenter Cup baseball team will be saluted on Wednesday night prior to the Phillies game against the world champion San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park.
The team will get to hang out on the field while the Phillies take batting practice and go through their pregame drills, beginning at 4:30.
Adding to what should be a special night is the fact that 1994 Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup alumnus and current Phillies catcher Brian Schneider will be presenting the championship trophy to the 2011 champs.
And, of course, it was Schneider who extended the invitation for the Lehigh Valley team to come on the field with the Phillies during batting practice. Schneider is the Carpenter Cup honorary chairman.
"This is a great example of a player remembering his roots," Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup GM Joe Pirro said. "It is an incredible act of generosity and a wonderful opportunity for our kids, almost all of whom will be in attendance. For those of us who have been around since the beginning of the Lehigh Valley franchise 19 years ago, it is a perfect story of coming full circle. It defines what this program has always been about—opportunity."
Lehigh Valley went 4-0 with wins at Ashburn Field in FDR Park, Coca-Cola Park and then two victories at Citizens Bank Park to complete their title run last month. Lehigh Valley defeated the Philadelphia Public League 12-0, Olympic Colonial 8-4, Tri-Cape 9-6 and Burlington County 5-3 in the championship game.
