NAZARETH AND COLONIAL REGIONAL

The Express-Times had an interesting article on the first public meeting by the Colonial regional police commission regarding contracted coverage to the Borough of Nazareth.

Two important things struck me from this article:

1. Members of the commission agreed they would consider hiring Nazareth officers, but don't want to feel obligated to do so.

2. The Colonial Regional Police Commission intends to make it clear to both Nazareth officials and the public that a contract with Nazareth would not be a merger, just a proposal to provide services.

So what does this mean?

I understand not wanting to feel obligated to hire the full staff, but instead give them consideration. I hope it is fair consideration based on merit.

The second point is bigger. It means that Nazareth Borough will make a payment, as will Bath, Lower Nazareth, Hanover, and Chapman (may be similar to Nazareth Borough, not sure) based on a formula, but they won’t have representation on the Commission that makes decisions regarding management and direction of the Colonial Regional Police Department.

Instead, Nazareth will purely be contracting a service, but have no oversight.

As a result of this, I would suggest that the formula be adjusted to reflect those that are represented on the Commission and those that aren’t.
