Schmidt services were private

FROM KEITH GROLLER

have learned from my former boss and still Morning Call colleague Paul Reinhard, who lives in the same housing complex as the Schmidt family, that services for legendary Dieruff basketball coach Dick Schmidt were held privately at the cemetery.

Many people may be surprised by the decision to have something private, especially since Milo Sewards had a viewing in the Allen High gym that bears his name when he passed away several years ago.

But this is in keeping with Schmidt being a private person. Remember this was a guy who liked to go in and out of the backdoor at Dieruff, even when he was in his coaching heydey.

He really didn't want a lot of fanfare.

So, while it may be disappointeing for Dieruff and Becahi alums not be able to pay their respects, it is in keeping with what the man was all about and what he would have wanted.

I am also told by Reinhard that the obituary on Schmidt will appear in Saturday's newspaper.

Several people have wondered where it was.
