Liberty High School football team defeats Northampton Area High School 34-6

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

BETHLEHEM | Names have changed for the Liberty High School football team.

Dave Brown is the first-year head coach, taking over for the very successful Tim Moncman.

James McCarthy is the junior quarterback the one to earn the starting job vacated by Anthony Gonzalez, who's now at the University of Pittsburgh.

In fact, there are fresh faces all over the field for the Hurricanes.

Somehow, though, the new kids are producing the same old results. After opening the season by beating Glen Mills, Liberty (2-0) kicked off the Lehigh Valley Conference schedule with a 34-6 victory over Northampton Friday night at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium. The Konkrete Kids dropped to 1-1.

The Hurricanes built a 14-6 halftime advantage, but started to pull away when senior Kasean Boyd returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown with 9:32 remaining in the third quarter. Six Liberty players combined for 228 rushing yards, and five different Hurricanes scored touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Liberty's defense stifled the Konkrete Kids, giving up just one first-half touchdown.

"Our defense is amazing," junior defensive end Dante Holmes said. "No matter what week it is, we're playing Liberty football."

That was evident from the start.

Northampton seemed to halt Liberty on the opening drive, forcing the Hurricanes into a fourth-and-10 from their own 43-yard line. Liberty lined up to punt, but McCarthy saw his opportunity and instead ran for 14 yards and a first down. Seven plays later on another fourth down, coincidentally Michael Harris scored on a 28-yard run.
