Key dates in American Legion baseball history

1925 — Junior baseball is proposed at the American Legion state convention in Millbank, S.D.
1926 — Yonkers (N.Y.) Post 321 defeats Pocatello, Idaho in first AL World Series in Philadelphia.
1927 — MLB’s first commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, pledges $50,000 annually to American Legion baseball.
1933 — Donations from several newspaper publishers help AL baseball survive through Great Depression.
1947 — Babe Ruth becomes American Legion’s director of youth baseball.
1949 — The first national player of the year is honored in Cooperstown, N.Y.
1970 — American Legion adds Cowger RBI Award, the Rawlings Big Stick Award and Bob Feller pitching award.
1982 — Boyertown Post 471 becomes Pennsylvania’s first World Series champion. The Bears won again in 1987.
1997 — Yardley Post 317 wins Pennsylvania’s third national title.
