The Bethlehem Area School Board has called a special meeting Monday to hire former Liberty High School Principal Joseph Roy as the district's new superintendent.
Roy, who is currently principal of Upper Moreland High School in Willow Grove, was the only candidate in a pool of 15 invited to meet with the public.
"(Roy is the) best choice for Bethlehem," said School Director Irene Follweiler, who chairs the district's human resources committee.
The board interviewed many candidates and Roy was set apart by his qualifications, his leadership qualities and an enthusiasm the school board thinks is "critical for the district during these challenging times," Follweiler said.
Colleagues described Roy as having an ability to inspire high performance and dedication in everyone he works with, Follweiler said. He also has an ability to connect with and bring together students, parents, faculty, staff and the community, she said.
Details on salary and contract terms were not immediately available.
Monday's meeting will be held at 6:30 in Broughal Middle School's auxiliary gym. The school is located at 114 W. Morton St. in Bethlehem.
Roy will replace Acting Superintendent Thomas E. Persing, whom the board hired last June, first as a consultant then to take over when embattled Superintendent Joseph Lewis retired. Persing, an educator with a long history of helping financially and academically embattled schools, was not interested in a permanent gig with the district.
Roy also has taught in the East Penn School District and served as principal at Palisades High School in Bucks County and Springfield Township High School in Montgomery County. He went on to serve as Assistant Superintendent of the School District of Springfield Township.
His achievements in some of his former schools have an obvious appeal in a district that has struggled with racial issues and meeting state math and reading standards.
While at Springfield, Roy spearheaded a community-wide initiative examining and addressing diversity issues. His work led to his winning both the Communicator of the Year Award from the National School Public Relations Association and the Administrator of the Year Award from the National School Library Journal.
He was named 2004 Multicultural Educator of the Year by the Montgomery County Advisory Council to the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
At Palisades, he developed the Palisades Academy, a school-within-a-school aimed at motivating students at risk of “falling through the cracks.”
A Franklin and Marshall College alumnus, Roy earned his master's degree in educational administration from Bucknell University and received his doctorate from Lehigh University.
