For a team with 10 freshmen, this is amazing what the Moravian College softball team is doing.
Here's the latest from Rhode Island:
#24 MORAVIAN OUSTS #9 TCNJ, 6-3, TO REACH FINALS OF NCAA PROVIDENCE REGIONAL
PROVIDENCE, RI --- The 24th-ranked Moravian College softball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and posted a 6-3 victory, eliminating top seed and ninth-ranked The College of New Jersey Sunday afternoon to reach the finals of the NCAA Division III Providence Regional.
The second seeded Greyhounds will play third seed Kean (NJ) University at approximately 2:20 p.m. with Moravian needing to win just once to reach the NCAA Division III World Series for the third time in seven seasons. If Kean wins the game Sunday afternoon, the two teams will meet in the if necessary game on Monday, May 17th at 10:00 a.m. to determine the regional representative to the World Series.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman shortstop Katie Gross (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on an error. Sophomore outfielder Olivia Evanko (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) followed with another infield single to put runners at the corners. Freshman third baseman Shannen Mohr (Slatington, PA/Parkland HS) then connected on a three-run homer to left field, Mohr’s second home run of the tournament and team-leading eighth of the season.
Moravian would add a pair of runs to its lead in the top of the fourth inning for a 5-0 advantage. Freshman first baseman Amanda Dizinno (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive HS) reached on an error to start the inning, and back-to-back fielder’s choices by freshman designated player Samantha Mulderig (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township HS) and sophomore pitcher Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central HS) loaded the bases with no outs. Three batters later, freshman pinch hitter Brook Kowal (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis HS) hit a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Dizinno and Mulderig.
The Lions would get two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the first two runs allowed by the Greyhounds in the regional, to cut Moravian’s lead to 5-2. Sophomore catcher Michelle Kent and sophomore outfielder Crystal Lee each had RBI singles in the inning.
TCNJ added another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from senior outfielder Danielle Hagel to pull within 5-3.
The Greyhounds would get one of the runs back in the top half of the sixth inning. Carmon led off with a double, and she scored on a two-out RBI double from freshman catcher Tori Thomas (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketchum HS).
The Lions had a 12-8 advantage in hits with freshman third baseman Kelly Hommen going two-for-three. Lee, Hagel and junior outfielder Colleen Cawley were each two-for-four for TCNJ while Mohr went two-for-four for the Greyhounds.
Carmon improved to 24-9 on the season in the circle for the Greyhounds as she allowed three runs on 12 hits and a walk with one strikeout. Senior Ashley Minervini took the loss for the Lions, allowing six runs, four earned on six hits and a strikeout in five-plus innings of action.
