Lehigh Valley IronPigs pitchers yielded only six hits, but shot themselves in the foot by issuing nine walks in a 3-2 loss to division-leading Syracuse.
Starter Ryan Vogelsong took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning behind Dewayne Wise's second home run of the season but yielded the equalizing run when the Chiefs strung together three singles.
"There’s a reason why these guys are in AAA,” manager Dave Huppert said. “He looked like he had it for five innings, then he can’t get out of the sixth. He’s flirted with disaster every start. If you look, he’s walking a batter an inning.”
Syracuse took the lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The IronPigs struck back for one in the bottom of the seventh inning but eventually dropped their fourth one-run game to the Chiefs this season.
Lehigh Valley and Syracuse play their final game of the four-game series on Tuesday at Coca-Cola Park.
Nate Bump (1-0) tries to end the IronPigs' two-game skid when he squares off against the Chiefs' Andrew Kown (0-1) at 7:05 p.m.
