February Sweeps begins Thursday. February is one of four periods during the year when the networks air new episodes and specials to earn higher ratings which leads to higher advertising rates.
That is one reason why the Super Bowl has been moved from the last week in January to February.
Sweeps also occurs in May, July, and November.
