Lehigh's Rackley goes to Jacksonville in third round

FROM KEITH GROLLER

When asked about the positives of Will Rackley earlier on Friday, Lehigh University offensive line coach Brett Sawyer said: “He’s never been late for anything in his life. I mean never. No matter how trivial, Will was always on time.”

So, why would the NFL Draft be any different?

Rackley was right on time on Friday night, if not ahead of schedule, when he was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the 12th pick in the third round and the 76th pick overall.

Rackley is the first Lehigh player drafted since defensive Rich Owens went to the Washington Redskins in the fifth round of the 1995 draft as the 152nd selection overall. He’s also Lehigh’s highest draft choice since quarterback Kim McQuilken, an Allen High graduate, went to the Atlanta Falcons in the third round and as the 69th choice overall in 1974.

Sawyer said Rackley and his family was at Radio City Hall in New York for the first round of the draft on Thursday, but everybody flew home to the Atlanta to be with more family and friends on Friday.

Rackley, listed at 6-foot-4 and 307 pounds, was an all-Patriot League and All-American left tackle with Lehigh, but will move to guard in the NFL.

Among his assignments with the Jags will be to protect new quarterback Blaine Gabbert, the Missouri star who the team traded with Washington to move up six spots and take at No. 10 in Thursday’s first round.

High school basketball coach getting paid six figures

FROM KEITH GROLLER
Everybody I know in high school athletics is quite concerned about the future.

Budget cuts are in the news and portions of athletic programs may soon be on the chopping block, if they're not already.

High school sports as we know it, is set to change and change for the worse. My guess is that within five to 10 years, you won't recognize it.

And while everyone in our area is sweating it out and fearing what's coming, I get news of a high school boys basketball coach getting paid $130,000.

The coach is Kevin Boyle.

Lehigh Valley area basketball fans should know him.

He has been here many times coaching his St. Patrick's team from Elizabeth, N.J., in the Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase at Lehigh and Parkland. He's a favorite of the folks who run The Hoop Group. And why not?

Boyle built St. Pat's into a national power and produced many Division I college players and future NBA standouts like Al Harrington and Sam Dalembert. He was a three-time national coach of the year, while at the same time getting into hot water with the New Jersey State Athletic Association.

In fact, last year, St. Pat’s was banned from the state tournament for holding illegal out-of-season workouts, which Boyle admitted to holding.

But that's behind him now because earlier this month Boyle accepted a job at Montverde (Fla.) Academy.

And the job pays well. Very well.

Several websites, including Rivals.yahoo.com are reporting that Boyle will receive $130,000 to coach at Montverde Academy. That's more than a few Division I college coaches make.

And that's not all.

According to multiple sources, Boyle will also get a car and a four-bedroom home across the street from the school. Remember, too, that Florida has no state income tax and the cost of living is cheaper than in New Jersey.

Area basketball coaches, even the best ones like Jim Hutnik, Doug Snyder, Pat Boyle, Ron Hassler and Chad Landis, have to wonder where they went wrong. I have no idea of their salaries, but they're lucky if they're making five figures to coach basketball.

I am not sure why a school like Montverde, already a national power, would pay Boyle this much.

Are the kids he is getting paying the school vast amounts of tuition dough? I doubt it.

Do they charge NBA prices for Montverde home games? Doubt that as well.

There must be big-time money to be made somewhere and someone figures Boyle is worth all of this dough.

It will be interesting to see if The Hoop Group could ever get him back into the Lehigh Valley for an event.

I remember Boyle being quite complimentary about the facilities at Parkland when he was here.

However, considering the cushy locale he's in now, Boyle might look down his nose at Parkland or anything else we have here.

IronPigs "fan" game; plus high school softball gets TV exposure

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Attended my first IronPigs game of the season as a fan tonight (Thursday). I was there on Opening Night as a columnist, but the "fan" games are more enjoyable.

Nice Bethlehem Steel hats were given out.

Of course, I didn't get one. Have to get there early to get any giveaway items at Coca-Cola Park (see Bill White's column in Thursday's paper about just how early you have to get there for bobbleheads), but they looked good on my section 110 neighbors.

IronPigs got down 10-0 early and were actually outhit 10-0 at one point. The stands, which weren't really full to begin with, emptied out fairly quickly because the IronPigs got down by so much.

It was still an entertaining game because of all the home runs, including some real tape-measure blasts that were "no doubt about it" from the time they left the bat.

The fans who left early nearly missed one of the great comebacks you'll ever see. The IronPigs fought Tim C back and were one swing away from really making it interesting.

These IronPigs do have much more spunk than the previous three versions. The Phillies injury problems, as happens every year, are probably going to hurt this team's pitching -- if they haven't already. But I do like how this team doesn't pack it in when they get behind.

As far as some other observations from my night at the Pigs:

1. It's curious to me that we're in Allentown watching a ballgame and yet Six Flags is a sponsor and gets to plug its amusement park, while Dorney Park, located no more than 7 miles away, is not mentioned at all. Of course, go to Philly and you will see Dorney Park ads on the big board.

2. Love the "Whack An Intern" on the field contest between innings.

3. I think they have to do the "Tyke At the Mike" routine earlier in the game at least in April and May. To have a grade schooler do it in the sixth inning on a school night is a little dicey. It's something I would have loved as a kid, at least until the next morning when my mother would have struggled to wake me up for school. Maybe P.A. announcer and school teacher Tim Chorones (pictured above) told the kid "Now get home and get to bed" as soon as he was done announcing the names.

4. I can't take full credit. But I believe I helped to name the now very popular "Dancing Dirt Dudes" grounds crew, and I am amazed that these guys remain one of the night's biggest attractions at every IronPigs home game.

In a Morning Call story during the team's first season -- the team's eighth home game to be exact -- I referred to the crew as the "dancing dirt guys."

Dancing dudes

Here was my lead from that April 19, 2008 story, pulled directly from the archives:

"The only "Thriller" at Coca-Cola Park on Friday night was Michael Jackson's 1982 hit being played over the P.A. system to accompany the dancing grounds crew prior to the top of the seventh inning.

The dancing dirt guys got a big ovation from the large "Fireworks Night" crowd of 9,186, but the IronPigs drew mostly groans as they ended the first homestand in franchise history with a dud, an 8-3 loss to Toledo."

It's not exactly thing the same beaming pride as the guy who nicknamed the 1927 Yankees "the Bronx Bombers" probably felt, or the guy who dubbed Ted Williams "The Splendid Splinter."

But I do feel good that I at least planted the seed for the "Dancing Dirt Dudes" nickname.

5. Late in the game tonight the flashing time/temperature sign showed 68 degrees. But I foolishly wore shorts and knew darn well that it was closer to 58 degrees than 68 at that time of night. At least the time was right.

6. Always nice to win something at the 'ol ballpark and our section did win "Buy One, Get One" big barbecue sandwich coupons from Dickey's Barbeque Pit. I've been eyeing that place for awhile over on Schoenersville Road. Trust me, those coupons will not go to waste.

7. Having just two umpires made me think I was at a Blue Mountain League or American Legion game. I was thinking they should pull either Richie Frey or Marty Ondrovic out from the bowels of the building (both former umps work for the IronPigs) and let them do their thing.

All in all, an enjoyable night. And frankly, when the game was over it was nice to be able to walk out of the place, get in the car and go home to watch the end of the first round of the NFL Draft rather than have to battle a deadline.

************************

RCN-4 will have live coverage of the four Colonial League softball games at Pates Park on Saturday, beginning at 1.

Gary Laubach, who loves his baseball, and Chris Michael will handle the broadcasts.

It looks like the rain will stay away and hopefully the eight teams will put on a good show, although the best team in the league at this point -- Saucon Valley -- is not part of the schedule.

The lineup:

Northern Lehigh vs. Bangor at 1.

Wilson vs. Southern Lehigh at 3.

Northwestern vs. Pen Argyl at 5.

Catasauqua vs. Palmerton at 7.

New Sinkhole

FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER

The Express-Times reports that there is a second sink hole that may be the same as the first but in a slightly different location.

The Morning Call also notes that the sink hole has meant all meets were competed as away events this year, but incorrectly states the problem is at Andrew S. Leh Stadium. The former track was at the Stadium, but the newly built track is adjacent to the new MS.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock sends out his mock draft; has Eagles taking O-lineman

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Rich Eisen went on David Letterman on Wednesday night to talk about The NFL Network's wall-to-wall coverage of the draft. It actually begins at 11 this morning with "Path to the Draft" and the pre-draft stuff continues all day.

As for the draft itself, it begins tonight at 8, and then the second and third rounds begin at 6 on Friday night and fourth round coverage commences at noon on Saturday.

Analyst Mike Mayock, who the NFL Network considers to be a draft expert, has put out a mock draft, which of course, could go out the window with one major trade early, as all mock drafts can.

He has the Eagles taking Wisconsin offensive lineman Gabe Carimi in the 23rd slot.

Here's his complete list as put out in a release by The NFL Network:

1. Carolina Panthers Cam Newton QB Auburn

5. Arizona Cardinals Patrick Peterson CB LSU
6. Cleveland Browns Julio Jones WR Alabama

Easton girls soccer edges Nazareth on overtime goal by Christiana Nielsen

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Christiana Nielsen's goal with 4:52 left in the first overtime period lifted Easton to a 3-2 victory over Nazareth in girls soccer.

The victory clinched a Lehigh Valley Conference playoff berth for the Red Rovers (12-2, 10-1 in the LVC).

"We've been down before and we know what we have to do to get it done." Nielsen said.

What Nielsen did was intercept a ball near midfield, then carry it in to about 25 yards before hammering a shot inside the far post.

Tiara Aziz scored with 8:08 to play in the second half to tie the game at 2-2, the second time Easton rallied from a deficit. Natalie Perdue also scored for Easton while Cassie Denger and Megan Strauser tallied for Nazareth.

Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Wolff to be on RCN show

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Bob Wolff, considered the longest running broadcaster in sports television and radio history, will be a guest on Thursday night's RCN-4 "Sports Talk" show hosted by Chris Michael.

The live show airs at 6 p.m. and viewers can e-mail questions and comments.

RCN regulars Gary Laubach and John Leone will be on the set while Wolff will be heard over the phone during the show.

Wolff, who will turn 90 later this year, and Curt Gowdy are the only two broadcasters honored by both the national baseball and basketball halls of fame.

Wolff worked as the play-by-play voice of the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins in baseball and worked the Colts and Redskins in the NFL, but is most firmly associated with the New York sports scene. He still lives in South Nyack, N.Y.

I remember him as the lead announcer on Knicks television games on Channel 9 back in the 1970s when the Knicks had great teams with Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe and Willis Reed, among others.

This should be an interesting and entertaining show, covering lots of sports broadcasting history.

Matisyahu's musical style matches reggae and rap with Jewish-themed lyrics. Born in West Chester, Pa., he uses his Hebrew name as his tag and released his first album, "Live at Stubb's" in 2005. He gained international notoriety with his hit single, "King Without a Crown." His latest album, "Live at Stubb's Vol. 2," came out in February.

Matisyahu played Mayfair last year in Allentown and returns to the city this year as part of his current international tour.

Stone Temple Pilots returning to Musikfest

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Stone Temple Pilots are returning to Musikfest.

The alternative rock band will perform 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5 on the Sands Steel Stage, according to a news release.

The band previously performed at Musikfest in 2008 during the final leg of its reunion tour.

Tickets cost $35-47 and go on sale 10 a.m. May 3 to ArtsQuest members and 10 a.m. May 6 to the general public.

The group rose to prominence in the early 1990s on the strength of their debut album “Core” in 1992 and its 1994 follow-up “Purple.” The latter spawned the hits “Interstate Love Song,” “Big Empty” and “Vaseline.” Stone Temple Pilots released three more studio albums before disbanding in 2001 shortly after the release of their album “Shangri-La Dee Da.”

Singer Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz reunited in 2008. The band released its self-titled album in 2010, which featured the single, “Between the Lines.”

Aaron Gray gets some love on TNT

FROM KEITH GROLLER

As someone who covered his high school career at Emmaus High School, I have to say it still fascinates me that I am watching an NBA playoff game from The Staples Center -- complete with Jack Nicholson and Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels in the front row -- and watching Aaron Gray play so remarkably well.

Gray drew rave reviews from TNT announcers Kevin Harlan and Reggie Miller as he helped New Orleans get off to a good start in pivotal Game 5 of the Western Conference first-round series late Tuesday night.

The Lakers did go on to win the game, 106-90 and take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series that resumes Thursday in New Orleans.

Gray played 13:48, but didn't score. In fact, he didn't take a shot. He had six rebounds and a blocked shot, with all but one rebound coming in the first half.

It was during the first half that the TNT announcers give him some attention, complete with a graphic charting his performance through the series.

"Aaron Gray, I mean totally out of no place, comes in and stars in Game 1 and has been steady pretty much the entire series," Harlan said after Gray blocked Ron Artest late in the first period. "He's already making his size felt in this Game 5."Aaron-gray

Miller tempered Harlan's praise somewhat.

"I felt he didn't make his size prevalent in Games 2 and 3, but in Games 1 and 4 he was 8-for-8 from the field for a combined 19 points," Miller said. "You're not asking for a lot from Aaron Gray. But he is a big body to match up with Andrew Bynum and he has skills offensively down low. He can score with either hand.

"But more importantly, he can block shots and clog the lane."

Miller, by the way, was a flashy player and since I like UCLA hoops, I liked him a lot in his playing days. But he comes off drabby as a color analyst.

Back to Gray. No matter how it ends, this series is clearly the highlight of his career to this point.

Whenever he's interviewed by one of us from The Morning Call staff, Aaron reminds us that very few people thought he'd be playing in the NBA at this point. Count me in as one who never saw this coming when I was watching him in Emmaus green and gold back in the early 2000s.

But Gray, who will turn 27 in December and is finishing his fourth NBA season, is a testament to what conditioning, desire and work-ethic can do when possessed in a 7-foot body.

He will never go down as one of the Lehigh Valley's best high school basketball players, but he will go down as perhaps the person who became the biggest surprise with what he did after high school.

Central's Abdur-Rahkman receives honor from MaxPreps

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Central Catholic's Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman, who was believed to be the first freshman from the Lehigh Valley ever selected all-state by the Associated Press, has been recognized on the national level by MaxPreps.

He was named to the third team of Freshmen All-American Team.

Abdur-Rahkman, a key figure in Central's District 11 championship run, averaged 14.4 points per game but also led the team in assists and was one of its top rebounders. He is already on the radar of many Division I programs.

Here are the other top freshmen from around the country selected by MaxPreps. It will be interesting to see how many more honors these same kids rack up before they're through and where they land in college.
