Lehigh Valley boxers to fight competitors from Poconos, New Jersey

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Amateur boxers from the Lehigh Valley will fight competitors from the Poconos and New Jersey tonight as the Larry Holmes Gym will host the Lehigh Valley Monthly Championship Boxing Series.

Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes will be in attendance and join Mike Mittman to provide television commentary for Service Electric.

Tonight's event is the fourth installment of the boxing series since August. Promoter and Holmes spokesman Jay Newman said the previous events have had competitive bouts.

According to Newman, the purpose of the series is to motivate young boxers to continue their training by giving them an opportunity to fight in front of a ringside and television audience.

Featherweight Jeffrey Dorsey, Holmes' grandson, is slated to fight Christian Cruz of Mount Pocono.

The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and tickets are available at the door for $20. The Larry Holmes Gym is located at 228 W. Canal St.

Also expected to compete tonight:
Jose Benetiz (Allentown) vs. Jamar Carter (Newark), 145 pounds; Tyreese Williams (Allentown) vs. Jawanza Dillard (Mount Pocono), 130 pounds; Cody Coronado (Bethlehem) vs. Gaston Noel (Newark), 152 pounds; Jeffrey Dorsey (Easton) vs. Christian Cruz (Mount Pocono), 125 pounds; Marcus Lugo (Mount Pocono) vs. Mario Martinez (Newark), 145 pounds, and Danny Lugo (Mount Pocono) vs. Hassan Saleem (Newark).
