LOWER NAZARETH MAN WALKS FOR CHARITY

It was all about the numbers Saturday for Lower Nazareth Township resident Kevin Rhodes.

Saturday was Rhodes' 50th birthday, so he planned to run and walk 50 miles in laps around his neighborhood to raise money for cancer research through Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Rhodes, who's run nine marathons, met his goal despite the 25-degree temperature and 20-mph winds. He started at 4 a.m. and expected to keep going until about 10 p.m., but managed to finish shortly before 8 p.m.

He had hoped to raise $10,000, but is proud of the final total -- nearly $4,900. During his walk, an estimated 150 people spent time running or walking with him.

“I’m just trying to keep up with him,” said Ben Gibson, a 29-year-old friend from Allentown who walked several laps with Rhodes.
