FUNDRAISER
The Express-Times reports that there will be a fundraiser on Sunday night at Saylorsburg’s Hotel of Horror from 6:30 – 9.
The fundraiser is to help pay for medical bills that arose from the three brain surgeries Bray had to undergo due to an arteriovenous malformation.

SPOT TO CLOSE?
The Express-Times reports that the Spot may be closing (read the article here). Owner Michael Yavorski, 52 of Lower Nazareth, was sentenced in October to three months to two years followed by one year of probation. Yavorski pleaded guilty to indecent assault and corruption of minors. He admitted to forcing a 12 year old girl to sit on his lap and fondling her after she swam in a pool at his house.
The girl told police:
The girl told police she and Yavorski were swimming at his home when Yavorski tried to force her onto his lap. The girl told police she went to change and Yavorski offered help, which she refused. When she finished changing, Yavorski let her have beer, forced her onto his lap and fondled her, police said.
Now Yavorski is to be released in time to run the Spot. He is to be accompanied by an adult at all times when working at the stand, but the family has stated they have received so many complaints they may close.

Maybe the Sports Illustrated jinx is affecting two entire teams in the World Series. I watched the two games in the Bronx the last couple of nights, games truly dominated by pitching, and get home to see my Sports Illustrated proclaiming: "WELCOME TO THE BIG BASH: Ryan Howard + A-Rod = World Series Home Run Derby."
Hasn't exactly worked out that way so far.
Howard had two doubles in Game 1 before striking out four times in Game 2.
A-Rod is back to being A-Fraud. He's 0-for-8 with six strikeouts.
And so far, this ballyhooed battle of blasters has had just four home runs with just three guys doing the damage.
Let's see if we can do some damage with our picks. Went 19-3 last week to go to 141-47 on the season, a .750 percentage.
For what's it worth, even after the Yankees won last night, I haven't changed my thought from yesterday -- the Phillies are still going to win the Series.
Actually, this is following the exact same pattern as last year's World Series and their previous two postseason series this year -- win one, lose one, finish it off.
There's a chance we won't be going back to the Bronx. Can't say I'd miss it.

CCHS 49, Dieruff 7 -- At least this is the last pounding these dogs will take before getting Allen.

Palisades 28, Southern Lehigh 27 -- The game of the night in the southern part of this league. My guess is you better watch out for deer as you make your way to Kintnersville.
Wilson 48, Saucon Valley 13 -- From the looks of it, Wilson took the week off last Saturday. Won't happen again.
Pen Argyl 28, Palmerton 12 -- Should be a gorgeous day at Pen Argyl on Saturday and a Happy Halloween for the Green Knights.

ES North 20, Lehighton 6 -- Had a good time at the Country Junction Pocono Pumpkin Festival last Sunday (I think that's what it's called). Saw lots of wonderful Carbon and Monroe County people there.
Pleasant Valley 14, PM East 13 -- Bears still can get to .500 under first-year coach Terwilliger.
Pocono Mt. West 20, Stroudsburg 19 -- This is a much better boys basketball matchup in the winter than it is on the gridiorn.
Hazleton 28, ES South 21 -- If I get back up to Hazleton during this football postseason (and there's a good chance I will), it just won't be the same without Ray Saul there to greet me and talk old times.
North Schuylkill 28, Panther Valley 21 -- Saw Ed Hedes while shivering my way to the upper deck at Yankee Stadium the other night and I think Ed said North Schuylkill was the best team up that way. I hope I heard him right through the freeze.
Tamaqua 34, Minersville 7 -- Raiders regroup from 20-2 shellacking received from Panther Valley.
Marian Catholic 19, Jim Thorpe 14 -- Down year for both, but at least the Colts are showing some life with two-game win streak.
Quakertown 27, CB West 6 -- For all of his fans, all four or five of them, here's your Toomey Anderson moment: "I talked to star Qtown tailback at open gym to let him know how he must get revenge for me against CB West. (Toomey's Parkland team lost in the PIAA playoffs to West back in the Pettine Era). He promised to handle the situation for me, and since he's a good player, I'm going to ride with him." And I'm going to ride the Toomey Express to a good pick here.
Pennridge 20, CB South 7 -- Pennridge should petition the PIAA to get its nickname changed from Rams. No one should be saddled with even the most remote of associations to that pathetic team in St. Louis.
Pottsgrove 34, Upper Perk 8 -- Pottsgrove is 8-0 and giving up just eight points per game.

This three-hour walking tour, led by costumed guides, visits six different sites in Nazareth in this annual holiday tradition. So far, the Phillies-Yankees battle is doing well in the ratings. Game two of the World Series on Thursday night led all shows with a 13 rating/21 share of the audience. Game one on Wednesday night earned a 13 rating/21 share also. That translates to around 19-million viewers per game.

Bus drivers are back behind the wheel for the East Penn School District. Officials with the First Student bus company say the bus drivers union accepted a contract Thursday night. The bus drivers were on strike since late Tuesday night.

It's back to business as usual in the Saucon Valley School District in Northampton County. Friday striking teachers put down their picket signs and returned to the classroom. A long standing contract dispute appears to be almost over.

East Stroudsburg University has pulled out of this weekend's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference field hockey championships due to an investigation of hazing involving alleged "team member participation," the university reports in a news release.
The university is also investigating "possible staff involvement."
"East Stroudsburg University does not condone hazing and takes hazing allegations seriously," university President Robert J. Dillman says in the release. "Hazing is an illegal and dangerous activity and is unacceptable in all forms. Student-athletes at ESU deserve the best possible experience and should be protected from participating in individual or team-based hazing practices."

Friday's PSAC semifinal, the university's first field hockey playoff game since 2002, against Shippensburg University will be forfeited. East Stroundsburg, 14-6, will also not participate in the NCAA Division II championships.

FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS ON BIG TEN NETWORK IN NOVEMBER
Big Ten Fall Championships to Air on Big Ten Network in November
Coverage to include cross country, field hockey and men's soccer
CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network will once again provide coverage of all three Big Ten fall championships, including live broadcasts during the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament and Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament and delayed coverage of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
The Big Ten Network will be in East Lansing for the semifinals and final of the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The games will air live at 12 PM and 2 PM ET on Friday, Nov. 6, as will the final on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Noon ET. Four Big Ten teams appear in national polls, including No. 8 Michigan State, which just clinched its first outright Big Ten Championship, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 18 Indiana and No. 20 Northwestern. Iowa has won the last three Big Ten Field Hockey Tournaments despite not holding the top seed in any of those events.
The Big Ten Network also will televise live the semifinals and finals of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament, hosted by Indiana University. Semifinal coverage will air live at 2 PM and 4:30 PM ET on Friday, Nov. 13. The final will be carried live at 2 PM ET on Sunday, Nov. 15. Northwestern currently leads all Big Ten teams at No. 12 nationally, while Michigan State will be out to defend its 2008 title.
In addition, the network will offer delayed coverage at 1 PM ET on Sunday, Nov. 15, of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, which take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, and will be hosted by Penn State University. The Big Ten has two men's teams ranked in the top 20, No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 18 Indiana. On the women's side, five Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 25, paced by No. 13 Illinois. The Badgers will be looking for their 11th straight conference title on the men's side, while the Golden Gophers will be aiming for their third straight conference crown on the women's side.
Entering this week's action, the Big Ten has multiple teams ranked among the top 20 nationally in fall sports, including in men's cross country (No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 18 Indiana), women's cross country (No. 13 Illinois, No. 15 Minnesota, No. 18 Penn State), field hockey (No. 8 Michigan State, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 18 Indiana and No. 20 Northwestern), football (No. 4 Iowa, No. 12 Penn State and No. 17 Ohio State), men's soccer (No. 12 Northwestern), women's soccer (No. 15 Ohio State) and volleyball (No. 1 Penn State, No. 6 Illinois, No. 7 Minnesota and No. 13 Michigan).

Coverage to include cross country, field hockey and men's soccer
CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network will once again provide coverage of all three Big Ten fall championships, including live broadcasts during the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament and Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament and delayed coverage of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
The Big Ten Network will be in East Lansing for the semifinals and final of the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The games will air live at 12 PM and 2 PM ET on Friday, Nov. 6, as will the final on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Noon ET. Four Big Ten teams appear in national polls, including No. 8 Michigan State, which just clinched its first outright Big Ten Championship, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 18 Indiana and No. 20 Northwestern. Iowa has won the last three Big Ten Field Hockey Tournaments despite not holding the top seed in any of those events.
The Big Ten Network also will televise live the semifinals and finals of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament, hosted by Indiana University. Semifinal coverage will air live at 2 PM and 4:30 PM ET on Friday, Nov. 13. The final will be carried live at 2 PM ET on Sunday, Nov. 15. Northwestern currently leads all Big Ten teams at No. 12 nationally, while Michigan State will be out to defend its 2008 title.
In addition, the network will offer delayed coverage at 1 PM ET on Sunday, Nov. 15, of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, which take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, and will be hosted by Penn State University. The Big Ten has two men's teams ranked in the top 20, No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 18 Indiana. On the women's side, five Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 25, paced by No. 13 Illinois. The Badgers will be looking for their 11th straight conference title on the men's side, while the Golden Gophers will be aiming for their third straight conference crown on the women's side.
Entering this week's action, the Big Ten has multiple teams ranked among the top 20 nationally in fall sports, including in men's cross country (No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 18 Indiana), women's cross country (No. 13 Illinois, No. 15 Minnesota, No. 18 Penn State), field hockey (No. 8 Michigan State, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 18 Indiana and No. 20 Northwestern), football (No. 4 Iowa, No. 12 Penn State and No. 17 Ohio State), men's soccer (No. 12 Northwestern), women's soccer (No. 15 Ohio State) and volleyball (No. 1 Penn State, No. 6 Illinois, No. 7 Minnesota and No. 13 Michigan).

NASD ATTENDENT RATES
Last week the NASD stopped reporting on the number of flu cases (the last report 10/16, indicated there were 221 reported cases and 49 were currently out of school) and began reporting on the attendance rate per building (read the latest report here). Previously, Dr. Lesky noted (September Board Meeting) that for extreme measures to be taken, the Commonwealth of PA suggests at least 10% of the total enrollment should be out sick.
The new report provides information on the past five weeks so one can see the trend, and it indicates that last year the average was between 92 and 96%. The district has 4715 students. I attempted to chart this out in excel, hopefully the full page graph will be readable.
The first reported week using the new system is the week ending 9/25 with the buildings ranging from 88 – 93%. This past week it ranged from 80 – 87%.
The HS has been the most consistent fluctuating from 85 – 88%, whereas Bushkill showed the sharpest decline from 93% to 82% last week.
Shafer had the highest percentage of students out last week at 80%, a full 20% or one-fifth of the student population at the building.
Since building enrollment information is no longer included in the Board Agenda packet, I took figures provided in planning for this year, and found what percent of the total population was allocated to each building. I then applied the recently released total enrollment of 4715 to get numbers.
For last week, my guesstimation is that nearly 15% of the entire population was out of school, or roughly 690 students per day.
The graph clearly indicates that the past two weeks have seen more significant increases in student absences.
Also of interest is the fact that the HS is comparatively unaffected. Previously, there were questions raised regarding the buses being disinfected regularly enough during the week and even throughout the day (due to different students coming on and off for the different bus runs during the day). Considering the large number of HS students who do not have to be transported by bus because they walk or drive/carpool to school, this might be the impact we are seeing. Alternatively, it could be that the flu hit the HS earlier, which it did, and that resulted in more students being out earlier and therefore the lower baseline.
As a parent, I’m concerned with 20% of Shafer’s students being out sick and 15% of the entire school population. If these buildings continue to trend with lower attendance again this week, it would seem something more should be considered.

The Express-Times reports on Ken Butz’s resignation as School Board President. He will continue to be a board member until his term expires in two years. The Vice President, Linda McDonald, will fill the position until the Board reorganizes in December following the election of two new members.

A 43-year-old Bensalem, Pa., woman was arrested today for allegedly posting an Internet ad offering sex in exchange for World Series tickets.

Nazareth Area High School senior middle hitter Tori Hamsher was named the Lehigh Valley Conference girls volleyball most valuable player by a vote of the LVC's 12 coaches. Hamsher, a Virginia Tech recruit, leads the first team that includes teammate Faye Lukas, a senior libero.
Others on the first team include Bethlehem Catholic freshman middle hitter Lauren Hess, Central Catholic's Audra Brady, Whitehall's Maggie Deichmeister, Emmaus' Erin Bond and Amanda Wallitsch and Parkland's Amanda Dougherty.

PIUS X GAME CANCELED
The Moore Catholic at Pius X football game, originally scheduled for Saturday in Bangor, has been canceled after a 16-year-old Moore Catholic student-athlete was killed in a car crash Saturday.
Johnny Ray was killed and another teen was injured when their vehicle veered off a rain-slickened road in Midland Beach, N.Y., early Saturday night.
Ray, who played football and baseball, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the unidentified passenger was hospitalized at Staten Island University Hospital North.
Veteran Moore Catholic coach Greg Rocco called Ray the best athlete he has coached. Ray played shortstop and batted leadoff in baseball. In football, he had caught three touchdown passes and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. He was being recruited by Rutgers.
Pius X will receive a forfeit victory.
In light of the cancellation, Freedom Village has agreed to move the Nov. 7 game to Pius X, allowing the Royals to hold their Senior Day activities at home.

On Thursday the NASD HS Girls Volleyball team clinched the Lehigh Valley Conference North Division. This secured a trip to the Lehigh Valley Conference tournament where they will play Emmaus in the semi-finals on Tuesday at Liberty HS at 7:15pm.

Thanks to the reader who forwarded some information on last night’s school board meeting. Prior to public comment at the end of the meeting, Board President Ken Butz announced his resignation from the position, but not the Board citing difficulties with other board members who have accused him of not being able to remain impartial when it comes to voting on resolutions after presiding over contract negotiations.
Also announced by Dr. Lesky is that the district is planning on holding an H1N1 vaccination clinic, and dates will be announced once they have vaccines in hand.
I looked through the board agenda and there wasn’t much to it. There was a transfer of $90,700 from the General Fund to the Capital Reserve Fund in order to purchase classroom computers for the intermediate school.
We also contracted for one year with a company in Pipersville, PA to provide equipment maintenance and calibration and necessary chemicals for the MS pool at a cost of $8,875.

The World Series many have waited for for 59 years is now set. Finally.
Phillies vs. Yankees.
It's on. And the nastiness has already begun among the fans.
We'll keep it civil on The Morning Call's "Calling All Sports" TV show.
Chuck Frantz, the president of the LV Yankees Fan Club, will be a guest as well as The Morning Call's Craig Kackenmeister, one of our sports graphics designers and a huge Phillies fan.
They'll discuss the series, the cities, the fans, everything involved with this special Fall Classic.
"Calling All Sports" can be seen at 8 p.m. Monday on Service Electric TV and at 6 Tuesday on RCN4.

Jeff Tourial of Lehigh's sports media relations and broadcasting has sent us the info for Monday night's Lehigh Sports Magazine show. And there's a Stellar attraction on that one as my friend Tony Stellar's daughter, Dana, will be making appearance.
Here are the specifics:
Guests include women’s cross country coach Debbie Utesch and runners Dana Stellar (Northwestern HS grad) and Katherine Pierce as they preview this weekend’s Patriot League championship at Colgate.
Also on the show, men’s golf coach Henry D’Alberto ’97 and sophomore Tim Rosenhouse recap the recently-completed fall season,which wrapped up with the Kelly Gutshall Invitational last week.
As always, football coach Andy Coen makes his weekly LSM appearance to discuss his team’s win over Bucknell and Saturday’s showdown at Colgate.
This week’s Lehigh Sports Magazine features a look at former Lehigh golf coach Kelly Gutshall ’50, who teaches weekly clinics for those just learning the game at Lehigh’s Mulvihill Golf Learning Center on the Goodman Campus.
The Lehigh Sports Magazine can be seen Mondays at 8:30 on WFMZ-TV and Lehighsports.com; Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. on Service Electric 2 Sports; and several times each week on Fox College Sports Atlantic, premiering Thursdays at 1 p.m.
