http://sportsmediajournal.com/ Welcome to a new year of Sports Media Weekly programs. Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I begin the show discussing a report by Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated that Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis will be joining ESPN as an NFL analyst once he retires at the end Baltimore’s playoff run. We spend some time looking at ratings numbers as the networks begin to look back at their successes of 2012.. We then recount the horrific accident which fell upon ESPN anchor Hannah Storm over the holiday break. She returned to work New Year’s Day hosting the Rose Bowl Parade on ABC. We finish our segment looking at the official national launch yesterday of the CBS Sports Radio Network Staying with sports radio our guest this week is Anita Marks, who will be starting a new nationally syndicated weekend sports radio show on the NBC Sports Radio Network. NBCSN Officially Announces “The Crossover”

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ We initially broke the news on a recent edition of Sports Media Weekly with guest Michelle Beadle. NBC officially made the announcement today that Beadle will be joined by former Fox News Dave Briggs on The Crossover: with Beadle and Briggs, a new 30-minute daily topical sports, entertainment and pop culture show that will air on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN). The program will premiere on Monday, January 28th at 6:00p.m. from New Orleans, the site of Super Bowl XLVII. As part of the show, Beadle and Briggs will welcome guests from sports and entertainment to discuss the news of the day, the sports teams they love, the projects they are working on and more. “We’re merely a show just looking to change the entire landscape of sports television in America,” said Beadle. “Also, someone finally needs to address this Tim Tebow guy.” “For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt NBC was the gold standard in television, and it’s an honor to join the team together with the talented Michelle Beadle,” said Briggs. “Bringing together me, who’s been covering the bitter politics of D.C., with Beadle, who follows glamorous and scandalous Hollywood, can only produce one thing; a unique new show.” “Michelle is one of the most talented and popular broadcasters in sports, and we wanted to design a show on NBC Sports Network that was uniquely suited for her. She developed an immediate chemistry with Dave Briggs, who has a sharp wit and a solid sports background,” said Sam Flood, executive producer, NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. “Sports and entertainment intersect on a daily basis, and The Crossoverwill bring those worlds together on a daily basis on NBC Sports Network.”

TV NEWS ON JANUARY 3

http://abington.patch.com/listings/abet-medical that TV Guide Network and TV Land had acquired reruns of HBO comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm, now we have news on when it will air on TV Land! But first as a recap, TV Guide Network had the first window to air the series (since Feb. 2010) and then TV Land would have the second window beginning in Feb. 2013. Well, now it's time for that second window as the series heads to TV Land this February! The comedy has not been a success in syndication with it not doing well in the ratings on TV Guide Network, WGN American and local broadcast stations. In fact, the latter two both dropped the comedy (along with reruns of Entourage) after just once season and TV Guide Network relegated it to late nights before dropping it completely recently. TV Land will launch the Larry David comedy on Saturday, February 16, 2013 with a three-day President's Weekend marathon. The marathon will air Saturday and Sunday from 11pm-6am and on Monday from 11pm-3am. Then beginning the next night on Feb. 19, the comedy will air every night at 2:00am & 2:30am and in a block on Sundays in the overnight from 2-6am. The series will essentially replace original encores at 1am, as That '70s Show goes from 2-3am to 1-2am. No other schedule changes will be made. Back to Curb, the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning show stars Seinfeld co-creator Larry David as an over-the-top version of himself in an unsparing but tongue-in-cheek depiction of his life. The series has aired for eight seasons and 80 episodes, but it is unclear if there will be a ninth season. As for TV Land originals, Hot in Cleveland will have its mid-season finale on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and Happily Divorced will have its second season finale on the same night. Reruns of original comedies are expected to air Wednesdays at 10pm until April 3, when TV Land launches new original reality series Forever Young on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 10pm. From the mind of Ashton Kutcher, comes a unique social experiment: what happens when fun-loving, uninhibited twenty-somethings are unknowingly picked to live and work with strong-willed, opinionated seventy-somethings? As they compete in challenges designed to bridge the generation gap, they ultimately learn you don't have to be old to be wise or young to be youthful! The series will air back-to-back episodes for five weeks and will have its finale on Wednesday, May 1. And then the original comedies return with new episodes on Wednesday, June 19 with the (LIVE!) mid-season premiere of Hot in Cleveland at 10pm, the third season premiere of The Exes at 10:30pm and the second season of The Soul Man at a new time of 11pm. No word on a third season of Happily Divorced just yet, but it is likely to get another season. Stay with us for further updates! He has two Ph.D's and an IQ of 187, he plays "Words with Friends" with Stephen Hawking, and he owns Leonard Nimoy's napkin. The global march to spread the genius of The Big Bang Theory's Dr. Sheldon Cooper just crossed scientific fields, from theoretical physics to evolutionary zoo biology, as a new species of the Brazilian orchid bee — Euglossa bazinga — has been named after Dr. Cooper's zippy catchphrase. Brazilian biologist Andre Nemesio from the Universidade Federal de Uberlandia discovered the new species of beautiful, but misunderstood orchid bee that bears a striking resemblance to the Euglossa ignita, (or more common Western Brazilian orchid bee). Because the bees share so many similar characteristics, their existence as a separate species eluded scientists for years. Hence, the bees' grand "bazinga" on the world of science!

http://www.mcall.com/business/mc-business-companynews-0103-20130102,0,6937574.story FROM THE MORNING CALL Bethlehem YMCA, Walmart Foundation address hunger The Bethlehem YMCA is increasing the meals and snacks it serves in its after-school program, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The Y's goal is to serve only meals and snacks throughout the 2012-13 school year that are low in sugar and salt and high in nutrition. Nearly 50 million Americans, including more than 16 million children and teens under age 18, live with food insecurity, according to the USDA. Through its after-school program, and additional funding from the Walmart Foundation, the Y will serve more children through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Child and Adult Care Food Program, which feeds school-aged children during the week, on weekends and during school vacations.

Restaurant review: Nazareth Diner features fresh look and big menu

http://www.mcall.com/news/local/mc-restaurant-review-nazareth-diner-0103-20130102,0,1754341.story FROM THE MORNING CALL When the Nazareth Diner closed last year for renovations, the restaurant added a full-service bar to its offerings and reopened its doors to reveal a transformed everyday dining spot. The three-month renovation took into account every detail. New tables, booths and chairs sparkle; even the seats at the counter are upholstered in fabric that matches seating throughout the diner. A wood-looking floor adds character. But it's the decor that really sets this restaurant apart. Glass panels portraying one tree branch in silhouette contribute an artistic sense, and colorful panels in a large dining room add a tasteful touch. My favorite part of the diner's new look are the paintings of angels in ceiling panels above the well-appointed salad bar. It made me think more of Rome, Italy, than Nazareth, Pa.

Which Broadcaster Covered Your NFL Team the Most in 2012?

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ For the just-completed 2012 NFL season, we kept track of which television announcer covered which team each week. We have the results of our research. And the outcomes are predictable. In looking at the NFL announcers for ESPN, CBS, Fox, NBC, and the NFL Network, the glamour teams of the league got the most coverage from the network’s top broadcasting teams. That is no surprise. What was interesting to note was that of the networks with one game a week (NFL Network, ESPN, NBC), the NFL Network did have a repeat participant during its 13-game schedule. Only New England, New York Jets, Houston, Washington, Dallas, and Detroit did not make an appearance on Thursday Night Football. Before we give you the breakdown of the NFL teams and which announcer called their games the most, one note. We will pair the team with the play-by-play announcer who called that team’s games most frequently. I would have liked to have listed the announcing team which covered the club the most, but there would have been some inconsistencies. Fox, for instance, paired Thomm Brennaman with Troy Aikman while Joe Buck was calling post season baseball. Sam Rosen worked with Brennaman’s usual partner, Brian Billick, those weeks. So to keep things simple we only recorded the play-by-play announcer who covered the games. Here is a list of NFL teams, broken down by conference, with the play-by-play announcer who called their games the most: AFC Baltimore- Greg Gumbel, CBS (4 games) Buffalo- Marv Albert, CBS (4 games) Cincinnati- Marv Albert, CBS (4 games) Cleveland- Spero Dedes, CBS (4 games) Denver- Jim Nantz, CBS (4 games) Houston- Ian Eagle, CBS (4 games) Indianapolis- Ian Eagle & Bill Macatee, CBS (3 games each) Jacksonville- Kevin Harlan & Marv Albert, CBS (3 games each) Kansas City- Kevin Harlan, CBS (3 games) Miami- Marv Albert, CBS (3 games) New England- Jim Nantz, CBS (6 games) New York Jets- Marv Albert, CBS (5 games) Oakland- Kevin Harlan & Bill Macatee, CBS (3 games each) Pittsburgh- Jim Nantz, CBS (6 games) San Diego- Kevin Harlan, CBS (3 games) Tennessee- Ian Eagle (3 games) It figures that the history of the Pats and Steelers would equal more face time from Jim Nantz. It’s revealing that Marv Albert was able to be associated with so many teams, particularly those in the eastern part of the country. Kevin Harlan being the favorite for the Chiefs makes sense as he is the former radio voice for the team and has familiarity with the Kansas City market. Cleveland and Spero Dedes says something about both the team and pecking order of announcers at CBS. NFC Arizona- Dick Stockton & Chris Myers, Fox (3 games each) Atlanta- Kenny Albert & Dick Stockton, Fox (3 games each) Carolina- Ron Pitts, Fox (4 games) Chicago- Kenny Albert, Fox (5 games) Dallas- Al Michaels, NBC (4 games) Detroit- Chris Myers, Fox (3 games) Green Bay- Joe Buck, Fox (7 games) Minnesota- Kenny Albert & Chris Myers, Fox (3 games each) New Orleans- Joe Buck & Kenny Albert, Fox (3 games each) New York Giants- Joe Buck & Thomm Brennaman, Fox (4 games each) Philadelphia- Thom Brennaman, Fox (4 games) St. Louis- Chris Myers, Fox (5 games) San Francisco- Al Micheals, NBC, Joe Buck & Kenny Albert, Fox (3 games each) Seattle- Chris Myers, Fox (7 games) Tampa Bay- Dick Stockton, Fox (5 games) Washington- Thomm Brennaman, Fox (3 games) Again, no surprise that Green Bay received more attention from Joe Buck. Kenny Albert spread himself around quite a bit while Chris Myers spent a lot of time covering teams from the NFC West. Dallas and San Francisco each were shown a lot of love from NBC. Here is a breakdown of the announcers for each network and the team (or teams) they covered the most this season: ESPN Mike Tirico- Chicago (3 games) Chris Berman- Oakland and San Diego (1 game each) NBC Al Michaels- Dallas (4 games) NFL Network Brad Nessler- 26 teams (one game each) CBS Jim Nantz- New England and Pittsburgh (6 games each) Greg Gumbel- Baltimore (4 games) Kevin Harlan- Cleveland, Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Oakland, Kansas City, San Diego (3 games each) Ian Eagle- Houston (4 games) Marv Albert- New York Jets (5 games) Spero Dedes- Cleveland (4 games) Bill Macatee- Indianapolis & Oakland (3 games each) Don Criqui- Buffalo, Miami, Tennessee & Jacksonville (1 game each) Fox Joe Buck- Green Bay (7 games) Kenny Albert- Chicago (5 games) Thomm Brennaman- New York Giants & Philadelphia (4 games each) Dick Stockton- Tampa Bay (5 games) Chris Myers- Seattle (7 games) Ron Pitts- Carolina (4 games) Sam Rosen- Washington (2 games) Gus Johnson- Minnesota, Carolina, Atlanta, San Francisco, Arizona, St. Louis (1 game each) The NFL Network gets the diversity award for not covering any team twice. Harlan deserves credit for working a full schedule while spending so much time with six teams.

TV NEWS ON JANUARY 2

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2013/01/the-hub-january-2013-schedule-facts-of.html The Hub has made some minor schedule changes. Most notably for us is that '80s sitcom The Facts of Life will be removed from its Wednesday primetime block. The sitcom was airing Wednesdays from 8-10pm, but effective tonight it will be replaced by a movie. Primetime movies are already airing on Monday nights, so The Hub is adding a second night of movies in primetime. As a result of this schedule change, The Facts of Life will move to late nights on Friday nights (technically early Saturday mornings) at 2:00am & 2:30am. The sitcom will lead into the classic Garry Marshall block which airs Friday nights (early Saturdays) from 3-5am with back-to-back episodes of Happy Days, and single episodes of Laverne & Shirley and Mork & Mindy. In addition, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch will be off of the primetime line-up on Tuesday nights and will be replaced by animated series Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond and Batman: The Animated Series. Not to worry as Sabrina, the Teenage Witch will continue to air in its late night hour on Sunday nights (early Mondays) at 3:00am & 3:30am after episodes of Doogie Howser, M.D. and Family Ties in the 2am hour. Staying put will be the Thursday night primetime block of '80s family sitcom ALF, which is doing well for the network. Also doing well for the network is the Sunday night primetime block of '90s drama Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman starring Dean Cain and the irresistible Teri Hatcher. The weekday strip of dramas Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Sliders from 10pm-12am (encores 4-6am) will continue to air. Back to Facts of Life, with it off of Wednesday nights, at least this means you won't have to choose between Diff'rent Strokes and Facts of Life, as Strokes premieres tonight on Antenna TV. So no trou-ble, Tootie!
