FROM THE MORNING CALL
Bethlehem YMCA, Walmart Foundation address hunger
The Bethlehem YMCA is increasing the meals and snacks it serves in its after-school program, thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The Y's goal is to serve only meals and snacks throughout the 2012-13 school year that are low in sugar and salt and high in nutrition.
Nearly 50 million Americans, including more than 16 million children and teens under age 18, live with food insecurity, according to the USDA. Through its after-school program, and additional funding from the Walmart Foundation, the Y will serve more children through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Child and Adult Care Food Program, which feeds school-aged children during the week, on weekends and during school vacations.
