Welcome to Digital Digest! It's Labor Day weekend, but we're here just like we are every other weekend with your news and our regular features, including a review of Scandal - The Complete Second Season. Let's get started! 

DIGITAL NEWS

Mill Creek announced a new partnership with Sony to release certain series on DVDs this week, but it really isn't anything new... at all. While the deal will include several classic sitcoms including Bewitched, The Jeffersons, Charlie's Angels, and more, it appears that the arrangement will exclusively be re-releases of products that Sony has already released. But, of course, it is possible that this arrangement could be expanded in the future and we'll see more.

Not every Sony series has been abandoned, however, and studios like Shout! Factory continue to bring us some of their classic series. The latest announcement brings something huge to DVD with Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman - The Complete Series. The 38 (yes, 38) disc set brings the entire series to DVD  on December 3, although it is not yet clear how "complete" this release will be. The runtime listed on amazon.com (which is not always correct, for what it is worth) says 8100 minutes, which would suggest roughly 350 episodes, or maybe fewer episodes and some special features. There were 325 episodes of the series under the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman title and an additional 130 under the Forever Fernwood title. We won't speculate one way or the other what the situation is, but we'll definitely follow up when we do know.

MPI has been rather quiet in regards to releases in recent months, but it appears that a few "best of" DVDs will be coming from the studio in October. On October 22, the studio will release "best of" collections for The Doris Day Show, Family Affair, and The Mothers-in-Law.

It was mixed bag for the Mountain Valley Conference football on Friday night.

East Stroudsburg South and Stroudsburg were impressive, and Pleasant Valley and Pocono Mountain West were left disappointed.

East Stroudsburg North continued its mastery of Honesdale, Lehighton pulled off a major surprise and Dieruff and Pocono Mountain East played some bonus football with the Cardinals getting to celebrate at night's end.

Pocono Mountain East 28, Dieruff 27 -- Shakur Lester ran for two touchdowns and passed for one, but he was stopped on the 3-yard line as Dieruff went for two points in overtime. PM East scored a touchdown in OT and kicked the extra point, which proved to be the difference. Corey Castillion scored three TDs and ran for 169 yards on 18 carries for the Cardinals. For the Huskies, Chris Marks was 13-for-26 passing for 149 yards and hit Tyshyn Harmon on a 48-yard scoring play.

Stroudsburg 49, Northampton 26 -- Gerald Douglas ran for 220 yards and three touchdowns for the Mounties. Stroudsburg scored 21 points in the second quarter, including a blocked punt returned for a TD and an 88-yard kickoff return. Nick Cook ran for 109 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns for the Konkrete Kids.

East Stroudsburg South 17, Freedom 7 -- Freshman quarterback Jake Cirillo threw for two long touchdowns---  a 65-yarder to Niko Petrone and a 71-yard strike to Bryan Nazario --- and the Cavaliers held Freedom scoreless in the second half. Joe Santos scored the lone Patriots TD as Freedom fell to South for the second straight year.

Nazareth 31, Pleasant Valley 9 -- An expected high-powered offense for the Bears never materialized and Jordan Gray ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns as the Blue Eagles continued their domimance in this series. Austyn Borre had the lone touchdown for the Bears, who trailed 25-0 before getting on the board with a fourth-quarter safety. Spencer King was 12-for-15 passes and two touchdowns for Nazareth.

Bethlehem Catholic 35, PM West 7 -- The Golden Hawks had no trouble avenging a Week 1 loss of a year ago with two interceptions returned for touchdowns keying a 21-point second quarter. Ryan Johnson and Chris Figler had the pick-6s. Michael McDaniel ran for two TDs and 130 yards for the Golden Hawks, who have already matched their win total of last season. Qmac Quiteh scored the lone TD for the Panthers.

Lehighton 27, Marian Catholic 14 -- Sophomore quarterback Tyler Cann ran for one touchdown and threw for another as the Indians delivered an opening-night surprise for coach Tom McCarroll, a Marian Catholic graduate. Cann ran for 66 yards and was 9-for-14 passing for 154 yards. The Indians built a 20-0 lead but withstood a late charge by the Colts. Anthony Agosti gained 76 yards on 12 carries and scored both of the Marian touchdowns.

ES North 29, Honesdale 19 -- Senior quarterback Will Quiles ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns, including a 58-yard TD dash in the first quarter. Kahir Bowman added a TD and ran for 77 yards and Kyle Huziarski and Dave Quiles each intercepted passes for the Timberwolves.

CATAWISSA—The Tigers of Southern Columbia celebrate their 50^thAnniversary this year. The first varsity squad was established in 1963. After five decades, the Tigers have won six state championships and have a team this year that many think can contend for a seventh. However, it’s only week one and a lot can happen before week sixteen.

For the second year in a row the Tigers opened up the season against the Pius X Royals. Last season, the Tigers dominated from the start and came out with a 61-0 road victory in Bangor. This year, the Royals kept it much more competitive and after the opening quarter ended, the score remained 0-0.  Both defenses showed up to play it seemed a lot earlier than the offenses did. The only real scoring opportunity in the opening quarter ended in a missed 34-yard field goal by Tigers junior kicker Luke Rarig that had the distance, but went wide left.

Easton Outplays Pennsbury With Second Half Defensive Gem

Fairless Hills, Pa., The Easton Red Rovers played a flawless second half of defensive football after allowing four Pennsbury touchdowns in the first half and Jr. running back Shane Simpson totted for 196 yards and three TD’s himself in their 38-28 opening game win at Pennsbury field. The win gives Easton a four game sweep between the two teams since 2010.

Easton took an immediate advantage on the first two plays from scrimmage when Sr. defensive end Nick Raso deflected and intercepted  Falcons quarterback Breon Clark’s pass returning it to the Pennsbury 2 yard line. Kyle Bambary took the next play in for the touchdown with only 24 seconds elapsing on the clock.

The Rovers started to take control of the first half when they scored on their next two possessions in quick four and three play drives. Holding a 21-7 advantage they were about to blow the game wide open when RB Joey Ford fumbled a hand off on a reverse from Pennsbury’s seven yard line which the Falcons converted to a TD two plays later on Raheem Thompson’s 93 yard run down the right sideline.

The Rovers let Pennsbury back into the game with two more turnovers which led to Falcons TD’s. It appeared that the momentum the Falcons were starting to generate would now break the game wide open for them.

Easton coach Steve Shiffert has always parlayed his teams to play a tough hard nosed brand of defense. Down 28-21 at half the Rovers began to control Pennsbury’s bevy of running backs by not allowing a first down the entire second half.  On their second, second half possession they generated a nine play, six minute drive culminating with Simpson’s 3rd TD from 28 yards. Another TD from QB, Bradley Wilkins and Matt Semanick’s 24 yard field goal capped a fine second half of football for Shiffert and his crew.

Nazareth Too Much for Pleasant Valley

Jordan Gray’s three touchdowns and Maxwell Wasilewski two scores help Nazareth  in overpowering Pleasant Valley, 31-9, on the opening night of high school football in the Lehigh Valley.

Nazareth (1-0) running back Jordan Gray (17 carries, 98 yards, 3 TD) led the charge in the first half with two touchdowns – one rushing and one receiving as his team took a 13-0 lead into halftime at Andrew Leh Stadium in Nazareth.

The Blue Eagles then extended their lead to begin the 2^nd half of play, when Wasilewski (4 rec., 69 yards) would return the second half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Nazareth 19-0.

About 1 minute and half a later, it would be Wasilewski again, this time he’d be on the receiving end of a 47 yard touchdown toss from quarterback Spencer King (11-17, 263 yards, 2 TD).  Blue Eagles 25-0.

Mountain Valley Conference favorite Pleasant Valley (0-1) would get on the scoreboard, when the snap went thru the end zone for a Bears safety, 25-2.

The Bears would score again assisted by a kickoff return of 55 yards to the Blue Eagles 7 yard line. Then Austyn Borre (4 rushes, 36 yards) would finish off the scoring drive on a 7 yard touchdown run, Nazareth 25-9.

Gray would erase any thoughts of a Pleasant Valley comeback with 3:14 left in the game, with a 25  yard scamper to the end zone.

Before tonight, Maxwell Wasilewski was basically an unknown commodity for Nazareth Area High School's football team.

That all changed during a brief stretch in the second half.

Wasilewski scored two touchdowns in the first 1:49 of the third quarter as the Blue Eagles pulled away for a 31-9 non-league victory over Pleasant Valley in the season opener at Andrew Leh Stadium.

Junior running back Jordan Gray rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns and also took a screen pass 60 yards for a score. Senior quarterback Spencer King completed 11 of 17 pass for 263 yards, and senior wideout Matthew Tuerk had three receptions for 98 yards.
