Emmaus beats Freedom, 47-44, for LVC title; Wiseley has 17 points, 17 rebounds

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Matt Wiseley had 17 points and 17 rebounds, but it was his blocked shot with about 15 seconds left that proved critical to Emmaus beating Freedom 47-44 Friday night for the Lehigh Valley Conference before a sellout crowd at Allen's Sewards Gym.

The 6-foot-7 senior was a dominant force throughout for the Green Hornets (21-3) who won their first LVC title since 2007.

He had six points and seven rebounds in the first quarter when Emmaus built a 12-4 lead and eventually stretched it to 13.

But Freedom (20-4) gamely fought back and used a 9-0 run late in the third period to tie the game at 33 and again at 35 entering the fourth quarter.

However, the Patriots suffered nother cold spell to start the final period and the Green Hornets scored eight unanswered points to lead 43-35 before Freedom got on the board on a Derike Chiclana basket with 3:45 left.

Freedom, trying to win the first league title in school history, eventually got it to 46-44, but Emmaus held on as Chiclana missed a desperation heave from the corner as time expired.

"Everything came together tonight the way we hoped," Green Hornets coach Steve Yoder said. "But Freedom is a great team and we expected nothing different tonight. It came down to the wire and we just made a few more plays than our opponent."

Emmaus will now get a first-round bye in the District 11 4A tournament and won't play until a week from Saturday, while Freedom will be in action in a round-of-16 game on Wednesday. The matchups and pairings will be released by the District 11 committee on Saturday afternoon.
