Central Catholic used a stellar defensive effort and the hard-nosed running of Colin McDermott to punch its ticket back to the PIAA 3A quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Vikings (8-5) moved into the state's final eight for the fourth consecutive year after posting a 23-0 win over Abington Heights at John Henzes Veterans Memorial Stadium in Peckville.
McDermott gained 260 yards on 36 carries and scored three touchdowns -- two on 2-yard runs and another on a 44-yard burst. One of the short TD runs was set up by a 63-yard punt return by Ryan Beville.
McDermott also had a 47-yard run that set up a 22-yard field goal by Robert Fridati.
The Central Catholic defense, meanwhile, posted its second consecutive shutout. A high-powered Abington Heights attack was limited to 183 yards in total offense.
The Vikings will likely play Selinsgrove, the District 4 champ, back in the Lehigh Valley next weekend.
A preliminary, but unconfirmed report, had the game going to Bethlehem Area School District Stadium on Friday night.
