Nazareth teen to race for Andretti in 2011 Star Mazda series

FROM THE MORNING CALL

Sage Karam, a 15-year-old from Nazareth, has been signed to drive in the 2011 Star Mazda Championship racing series for Andretti Autosport, the team announced Monday.

Karam has been racing for Andretti Autosport since March, when the team hired him to drive in the USF2000 national championship. He went on to score nine victories in 12 starts during the season, helping the team win the USF2000 team title, according to a news release.

“Sage did a great job in 2010 and really showed us what he is capable of,” said Michael Andretti, the team’s chairman, president and chief executive officer, in the release. “This takes us one step closer to developing a driver all the way through to the IZOD IndyCar Series. I’m looking forward to seeing what Sage can accomplish next season.”

The Star Mazda and USF2000 series are among the levels in IndyCar’s ‘Road to Indy’ program for developing young drivers.

“Driving for Andretti Autosport is special for me,” Karam said in the release. “Growing up in Nazareth, Mario, Michael and Marco have always been heroes to me. So every time I strap in the Andretti car, it’s very special to me.”
