FROM KEITH GROLLER
Yesterday I wrote about Knoebel's Grove and how it reminded me of Dorney Park years ago.
Well, a few people wrote and told me they missed the old Dorney, too, and said one of the things they missed was the old Dorney Park Speedway.
That's why a reunion for Dorney Park Speedway on Nov. 3 at Allentown's America on Wheels Museum figures to be very popular. It will start at 11 a.m.
Dino Oberto, who is the voice of Pocono Raceway and the PR director for Mahoning Valley Speedway has put out a release on the event. This is evidently not the first Dorney Park Speedway Reunion that has been held.
Here's Dino's information:
The reunion which was the brainchild of videographer and historian Dale Snyder, owner of Snyder Video Productions, has grown in size and popularity since its beginning in 2010.
Mahoning Valley Speedway, under the direction of Floyd Santee, has rapidly become the success story of all racetracks in the Northeast, will be teaming up with America on Wheels to make this year’s edition the biggest ever.
The show will once again feature the induction of four drivers into the Dorney Park Speedway Hall of Fame and this year we will be adding a Mahoning Valley Speedway Hall of Fame.
When Dorney closed in 1986 many of the drivers and fans relocated to the Lehighton based Mahoning Valley Speedway which Ward Crozier resurrected from the weeds. Many of the present day Mahoning drivers and fans have deep roots in Dorney Park it is only fitting to establish the Mahoning Valley Hall of Fame at the America on Wheels Museum.
An outdoor car show will start at 11 a.m. All cars and drivers of any type past or present are invited to put their cars on display. The cars do not have to be from Dorney and Mahoning. Mahoning Valley Speedway will have a major display as well as displays from various other local speedways. Racing historical groups will also be in attendance.
At 1:00 p.m. the event moves indoors for the induction of four drivers into the Dorney Park and Mahoning Valley Hall of Fame plus driver interviews and an autograph session will take place.
Noted newspaper journalist, announcer and public relations director Dino Oberto will be onboard with the promotion of this event.
The America on Wheels Museum is located at 5 North Front Street, Allentown, Pa. 18102. Phone 610-432-4200 or
