The death was confirmed today by the actor's friend, UNC President Bill Friday told WITN News. The actor earned accolades for his role as the sheriff on "The Andy Griffith Show," which ran 1960-68. Griffith again earned legions of fans with the 1986-95 television series "Matlock."
