Former Phillie Schmidt coming to Bangor Memorial Park

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Ok, it's not that Schmidt. Freddy Schmidt, a pitcher for the 1947 Philadelphia Phillies, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the start of the Colonial League regular season finale between Slate Belt rivals Pen Argyl and Bangor at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at Bangor Memorial Park. Schmidt, who lives in Wind Gap, is 96 and according to Wikipedia, he is the oldest person to have played for a World Series-winning team and the fourth-oldest living former major league player. Schmidt pitched for the Cardinals in the 1944 World Series helping them beat the St. Louis Browns in six games. He was 13-11 over three seasons. He had 98 strikeouts and a 3.75 ERA in 85 appearances, including 15 starts, three complete games, two shutouts and five saves in a total of 225.1 innings. Other night games at Bangor Memorial Park will be held on Friday, April 27th when the Slaters play Northern Lehigh and on Monday, May 7 when Bangor plays Northwestern. Start times for both of those games are 7 p.m.
