ALLENTOWN'S DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION is embarking on a new community partnership with The Salvation Army, 144 N. Eighth St., Allentown. Both organizations will collaborate to increase programs and activities for at-risk youth downtown, including the popular Midnight Basketball program, which will be held 9 p.m. to midnight Fridays through March 2. The basketball program will be coordinated by the Allentown Mentoring Enrichment Network and will also offer mentoring, tutoring and career development. Other programs will include youth indoor soccer, gang prevention, fire safety and prevention, nutrition education, youth fitness, open youth basketball, dodge ball leagues, leadership training, career building workshops, financial education, art classes and after-school programs. After-school tutoring and mentoring is done in conjunction with Arline Institute. Youth indoor soccer will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 7 through March 31 and at the direction of the Allentown Youth Soccer Club. Dodge ball begins Wednesday and will be held 4-5 p.m. Wednesdays through March 28. Art classes will be held 4-5 p.m. Fridays and instruction will be offered by Cotty's Cartoon and Art Studio. THE EAST PENN SCHOOL DISTRICT is accepting registrations for its spring community education classes. Classes will include painting, aquatics, basketball and calligraphy. Course brochures are available at schools, libraries, community centers in the East Penn School District area.


NORTHAMPTON COUNTY

EAST BANGOR UNITED METHODIST COMMUNITY CHURCH, 136 W. Central Ave., is accepting orders for its pastie sale until Sunday. Selections include beef and broccoli cheese. Onions are optional. Pasties can be picked up at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. To order, call Lois at 610-588-1745.

NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township, will hold a grant-writing workshop 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 10. The workshop, which will be open to representatives from nonprofit agencies, will highlight the services provided by The Foundation Center, Northampton County's largest database of private foundations, and will provide an overview of its database of more than 100,000 grantmakers. The session will include an introduction to The Foundation Center, an organization devoted to supporting and improving institutional philanthropy, an overview and demonstration of grant resources included in the Foundation Directory Online database, and an opportunity to use the database. It is suggested that participants bring a flash drive with them to save information. Although the workshop is free, reservations are required, call 610-861-5358 by Friday.

BUCKS AND MONTGOMERY COUNTIES

Participants will learn about a centuries-old technique of decorating and painting paper to use as book covers and end papers. The cost is $5. MONROE COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER, 8050 Running Valley Road, Hamilton Township, will present a slide-illustrated discussion on the natural history of Alaska's Denali National Park, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 7. The program will be based on environmental educator Brian Hardiman's three summers living and working in Denali. The cost is $5; $3 for members and children under 12.
