For much of the season, Allen and Liberty were ranked fairly high among the 4A boys teams in the state.
Some scoffed and suggested that the rankings were off the mark.
Maybe not.
Both the Canaries and Hurricanes were very impressive in posting opening-round wins in the PIAA Class 4A tournament on Saturday night at Parkland.
Liberty got 17 points from Izel Dickerson, 13 from Darrun Hilliard and 11 from Alex Akabogu in a well-rounded performance that carried the Hurricanes to a 56-41 win over Roman Catholic.
Liberty's defense was superb as was its foul shooting (21-for-26).
Allen also dug in defensively in its 56-44 win over Norristown.
The Canaries got 20 points, 20 rebounds, four blocks and a spectacular slam dunk by Daquan Holiday and a typically solid 12-point, 15-rebound effort from Jalen Cannon in turning away the District One No. 7 seed.
So, both will move on to Wednesday's second round at times and sites to be announced.
It would be wonderful if both played in the same location, but it's doubtful.
Liberty will play Council Rock North, a 60-52 winner over Chambersburg on Saturday. North (26-2) is the runnerup in District One.
Allen will play La Salle College, a 57-55 winner over Reading on Saturday. La Salle (20-5) is the District 12 runnerup.
