A groan for Gosselin returning to DWTS and other stuff from a rainy Tuesday
FROM KEITH GROLLER
If you're not into Dancing with the Stars, I apologize for my commentary. And I assure you there's more sports to come later in this blog entry.
I was pleased that the sports community survived the first round of elimination tonight, and so Ochocinco, shown below with dance partner Cheryl Burke, Erin Andrews and the Olympic gold-medal winning skater Evan Lysacek will be back on the ABC show next week, as will my favorite pro -- dear, sweet and lovely Edyta.
But there was a groan in my section of the sports department tonight when it was revealed that Kate Gosselin will be back for another week.
One of the other sports staffers said that it's a conspiracy-- ABC knows she draws ratings, and fixed it so she will be back despite her increasing unpopularity everywhere. Every good drama needs a villain. That can be the only reason she will be back.
I talked to a local business person last year, a nice man who I trust would never lie and he told me he had Gosselin in his store to sign her book and she was the most arrogant, condescending, difficult person he's ever dealt with in his entire business career. He's not the type to speak negatively of anyone and he really couldn't stand her.
And I've kept those words in the back of my head for nearly a year after watching that whole Jon and Kate fiasco unfold.
I wish she would go away, and he would go away and those eight kids could find new parents.
********************
We had the all-area photo shoot for our boys basketball package today and everybody made it in here despite the bad weather.
What impressed about the 11 young men who will be featured on Friday is that these are generally good, smart kids. I think there are a lot of bright futures in this bunch.
The young man who has the brightest future on the court is Liberty's Darrun Hilliard. He's in no rush to make his college decision. He's got seven full rides on his table and many of them are from Philly schools -- Temple, St. Joe's, Drexel and Villanova. He'd like to stay close to home, and he said he was very impressed with Villanova. But he's a long way from making his final decision. He seems to be enjoying the process and isn't getting overly stressed by it -- at least not yet.
Look for Hilliard to receive some kind of all-state selection when the teams are released next week. Sticking around to the state 4A semis certainly enhanced his chances because he was seen by a lot of media in the eastern half of the state.
***********************
I will be going to New York City and the NIT finals on Thursday and I have to admit that while I am not a North Carolina fan, I wasn't all that excited about a potential Rhode Island-Dayton championship game either. So I am glad UNC won its semifinal game in overtime, even though it took ridiculously bad foul shooting by the Rams (can't anyone make free throws anymore?) and a bad non-call on the game's final play before UNC could secure its trip the finals.
I am going to NYC on a bus with a bunch of Catty people, "Larry Millerites" I call them, and I am sure they will be all '"Heeled Up" on Thursday even if I won't be. Dare I yell "Let's go Flyers!" for Dayton? It's comforting that the weather forecast, at least the last one I saw, is predicting nice weather. And since I am spending all day in the Big Apple, that's good news.

Missed this one from the Express-Times over the weekend about the 5th graders American History project at the Intermediate School.
Social studies teacher Rhonda Fehr said the projects grew out of the students' lessons on why Europeans came to America.
The assignments for Friday's event focused not on the big historical events of the time, Fehr said. Instead, they focused on the culture and livelihood of the everyday colonist.
For the project students dressed as people did in colonial times and took on roles of the people during that time.

Bonus sports TV/Radio news: Strawberry quits, Buck cancelled, Ochocinco stumbles
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Two of my favorite shows are "Celebrity Apprentice" and "Dancing with the Stars" and since both reality shows feature sports personalities, they are fair game for commentary in the sports TV columns.
On Sunday night's "Celebrity Apprentice" Darryl Strawberry basically quit and asked Donald Trump to fire him. It was not a graceful, noble exit.
I still have trouble understanding why he's a beloved figure in New York, but Strawberry offered nothing on the show, including any kind of personality. He seemed disinterested from the start, and then said he was tired from his book tour. (Even though the show is seen now, it was taped in the fall in New York).
While Sharon Osbourne and Cyndi Lauper seem to be the dominant personalities on the NBC show, sports figures remain the show's backbone with Olympic swimming champ Summer Sanders (pictured below), Olympic sprint champion Michael Johnson and Holly Robinson Peete, the wife of the former Eagles quarterback, all in strong contention.
As for DWTS, this season is just full of eye candy for men looking for something to watch between basketball games. It all starts with new co-host Brooke Burke, a past DWTS champion.
Pamela Anderson, ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, Shannen Doherty, and one of the Pussycat Dolls, Nicole Scherzinger, add to the appeal. Scherzinger, with her musical background and a strong partner, is the clearcut favorite. Andrews, a member of the dance team at the University of Florida in the late 1990s, is also well ahead of most competitors and destined to stick around a long while.
It's funny, during sporting events, Andrews (below) draws the oohs and aahs from macho row during her updates with coaches, but she doesn't stand out so much when stacked up against the likes of Anderson in this sequined competition.
The less said, the better about Kate Gosselin. I'm sure you'll continue to read and hear about her elsewhere as you have for more than a year now as one of the most overrated celebrities in U.S. history. No need for me to say much more. Seeing her argue with her dance partner during practice sessions, you can almost hear her shady, cradle-robbing, ex-husband saying "I told you so."
Although former astronaut Buzz Aldrin, understandable for a guy who is 80, has no dancing ability, I am hoping Gosselin is sent back to be with her eight kids after tonight's elimination show.
As for this season's NFL entry, Ochocinco; he had a great debut but had trouble waltzing on Monday night. He seems more interested in hooking up with his dance partner than learning new steps.
Because of Aldrin and Gosselin's more pronounced troubles, Ochocinco will probably make the first cut, but he doesn't seem capable of following the strong DWTS showings of previous NFL stars like Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice and Jason Taylor. Notice, too, who he brought along for support. Terrell Owens has been in the audience the first two weeks of the show.
Of more concern to Groller's Corner is the staying power of our longtime favorite pro dancer, Edyta Sliwinska. Once again, the producers haven't given the lovely Edyta (pictured below) a strong partner and sadly, she won't be around for long. When she goes, we'll shed a tear with her.
****************************
Joe Buck's HBO show was cancelled after just three episodes. Artie Lange created a stir on the first one with his foul language, but the other two shows generated no interest whatsoever. In an interview in St. Louis, Buck seemed unfazed by the show's exit and as Fox's lead guy on the NFL and major league baseball, it's not like he doesn't have enough work.
****************************
Classy play-by-play guy Dick Enberg has likely worked his last NCAA tournament game for CBS. He is actually picking up more work, however, as the TV play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres. He lives in San Diego.

PARKLAND BEAT NAZARETH MONDAY IN GIRLS SOCCER
By Express-Times staff
The Parkland girls soccer team traveled to Nazareth for a battle of Lehigh Valley Conference heavyweights and emerged with a 2-1 victory in their season opener.
Tara Huber assisted on one first-half goal and then netted the game winner midway through the second half to account for the Trojans offense.
"The last four years we've either opened against Nazareth or Emmaus," Parkland coach Al Haddad said. "This was a tough start for us. We've only been outside five or six days. We just ran on adrenaline and got the job done."
Cassie Denger netted the Blue Eagles' goal off an assist from Charlotte Koerner.
Parkland (1-0, 1-0) 1 1--2
Nazareth (1-1, 0-1) 0 1--1
First half -- P, Morgan O'Brien (Tara Huber), 29:10.
Second half -- N, Cassie Denger (Charlotte Koerner), 24:37; P, Huber (Emily Schneider), 19:20.
Shots -- Parkland 9; Nazareth 7.
JV score -- Nazareth 2-0

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Denny Hamlin has won the rain-delayed NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway, surging to the front in a wild finish after a blunder.
This was Hamlin's second straight victory and it came on the shortest, oldest track in the Sprint Cup Series.
Hamlin gave up the lead with less than 10 laps left today when he headed to pit road for tires. He then rallied from ninth place to the lead in a span of just four laps.
The finish was a two-lap sprint in which he started fourth. He pushed Ryan Newman out of this way, then slipped inside Matt Kenseth and leader Jeff Gordon for the victory.
The race originally was scheduled for Sunday but was postponed a day because of rain.

Pennsylvania House Democratic leaders are explaining why some top staffers got hefty salary increases late last year and others received raises after
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania House Democratic leaders are explaining why some top staffers got hefty salary increases late last year and others received raises after a pay freeze took effect on Jan. 1.
The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reported Sunday that House Speaker Keith McCall's chief of staff Paul Parsells received a nearly $19,000 pay increase and Parliamentarian Reizdan Moore's salary was boosted by more than $6,000.
That's in addition to a dozen House Democratic staffers who received pay raises after a "salary control" pay freeze took effect in January.
House Majority Leader Todd Eachus says those 12 raises were mistakes but he's letting the recipients keep them.
The newspaper says House Democrats resisted requests to release details about the pay raises, and it took the paper six weeks to obtain the information.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOC!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I can't believe NewsOverCoffee has been online for four years! To celebrate, I decided to update the template. This is only the second time I've changed the look of the site, and I think it is easier on the eyes when reading. I hope you like it and as always, feel free to leave comments.
Since re-launching on 3/28/06 there have been over 2500 posts and in both 2008 and 2009 there were over 100,000 visits and over 160,000 page views - a huge increase from the 18,000 visits and 40,000 page views I had in the first year!
Obviously, things have changed quite a bit online since I came up with the idea and tried launching it in 2005. Then, only 25% of internet users had read a blog, and Facebook was only available to college students at select universities.
In 2006 NewsOverCoffee became one of only 500 community based news sites in the United States. Today there are thousands and there are now thirteen blogs by Nazareth area residents or about some aspect of the community that I follow and summarize in my weekly (almost) round-up.
From the beginning I wanted a site where people in the community could share information with one another regarding the numerous local meetings and organizations that often have the most direct impact on our lives. I also wanted an environment that was 'flame-free' and safe. One in which people would be comfortable making a comment. I wanted to be fair and present information for others to decide.
I respect that this makes the site 'bland' by comparison to some others and without an editor I know that my own biases come into play on occasion, but for the most part I think I've accomplished the tone and environment I set out to achieve.
While Nazareth is fortunate to have both The US and The Key, neither has reporters and both rely on submitted material and advertising. The Express-Times and the Morning Call probably give our area more press than it 'deserves' because it is a 'battleground' area in regard to subscribers. Despite that, the dailies can't possibly cover every school district nor can they cover each municipality. This is where NewsOverCoffee fits in and works. It provides the information residents can't get unless they are at the meetings.
I'm fortunate to have established good relationships with the staff and reporters of both newspapers. I believe I've helped them identify stories and have recognized their coverage of our community. To them I say thank you - they've been great supporters.
While I thought every group and activity would be falling all over themselves to share information on NewsOverCoffee (the original plan was for them to submit content, it failed hence the re-launch in 2006), I have slowly gained a few that regularly submit their events and report on their activities. If you are involved in a group and want to get word out - send info to editor@newsovercoffee.com (included in the body of the email is best).
I also want to thank the small handful of individuals who have contributed posts through the years. Those include:
Jacob Allen, a student who has reported on School Board meetings
Becky Butz, who continues to attend many Council meetings and is kind enough to take notes and forward them to me periodically
Chris Moren, now a Councilperson in Tatamy who later founded Tatamy Happenings and continues to blog
Brad Moulton, who tirelessly covered School Board meetings for a year or so
Most of all, thanks to everyone who reads, comments, and sends me emails about what is happening or what they've heard about!
From the early controversy of the new Borough Police Department to the Teachers' Strike and New Middle School, while tempers have flared, most everyone has been respectful and we've worked through the issues that were most challenging.
Here's to continued coverage of the community and fewer controversies in the future!
Thanks again for reading and have a great week!

Next time, I am wearing contact lenses
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Glenn Noack, the Lehigh Valley basketball hall of famer and my teammate for 10 minutes, summed up my performance with this: "Groller, your line was two turnovers and two fouls."
I think he might have added one each to that total -- but hey, I don't like when people challenge my stats, so I am not going to challenge his.
Nuggsy was talking about my effort in the Special Olympics/Celebrity Challenge Sunday at Northampton Community College. The game was tucked in the middle of the four Via high school all-star games that closed out the local basketball season, at least for three months until the summer schedule tips off the 2010-2011 season.
Yes, I did have a turnover that led to a tying basket for the opposing team and a "phantom" foul called on me with no time left on the clock that produced the game-winning point for the other team, but hey, I had an excuse. I was playing the last couple of minutes without my glasses.
I found out that all Special Olympians are not alike. Some are older, bigger, stronger and faster than others and one Special Olympian on the opposing team sent my glasses flying in trying to take the ball away from me after I grabbed a rebound (Nuggsy didn't include that on my stat sheet).
The glasses were eventually fine (thanks Liberty fan Joey Kirk for fixing them after one of the lenses popped loose) and the bottom line is I had a lot of fun making some new friends and being with the Special Olympians on my team, even if it was just for a few minutes.
The whole event was put together by Via and Traci Cyr, who is the amazing former Notre Dame coach who is doing remarkable work in our community with various endeavors to help kids with disabilities. I wasn't there because I had to leave early to get to the Liberty-Penn Wood game Weds. night, but I heard Traci and NCC athletic director Troy Tucker gave a very moving presentation on children with autism at the Via banquet. Both Cyr and Tucker have children with autism.
Anyway, it's always heart-warming to see these kids who have a disability experience the sheer joy of competing and succeeding, as many of the kids did on Sunday.
Seeing what they go through just to be able to communicate and interact with others in a regular activity can really put things in perspective.
The kids are wonderful, and the people who work with them and devote their lives to helping kids with special needs, are angels on earth. Cyr, I believe, belongs in that category and I will be writing more about her in an upcoming column.
Spend 10 minutes with them and you can be hooked. I left Sunday's "game" feeling like I wish I could do more, and should do more. And when you make the commitment to do more, you're a winner even if you don't score a single point.

LVC sweeps the competition at the 2010 VIA Basketball Classic at Northampton Community College Sunday!
By Keith Groller
OF THE MORNING CALL
Rutgers University has put a full ride on the table for Carly Gallagher to play soccer.
But she admits ''it's up in the air right now'' as to whether or not she'll accept the scholarship offer.
''Basketball is my true love,'' the East Stroudsburg South star athlete admitted.
And that love was on full display Sunday afternoon at Northampton Community College in the 35th annual Via All-Star Basketball Classic.
In what could be her last basketball game in an organized setting, Gallagher scored an event-best 44 points.
Her Mountain Valley Conference all-star team lost to the Lehigh Valley Conference East squad 91-83, but her offensive performance was one of the highlights during Via's four-game extravaganza called ''Super Sunday.''
The LVC West teams swept their games against the Colonial League with the girls winning 84-39 and the boys rolling 108-88. The LVC East boys completed a four-game sweep for the league with a 129-116 win over the Mountain Valley Conference in a game that featured 142 points in the second half alone.
There was plenty of offense in each game -- in fact, Pocono Mountain's East Kyheim Hall scored 37 points, also in a losing cause -- but no individual performance was as good as Gallagher's. She scored 24 points and had four 3-pointers in the first half alone.
The contests were played with two 20-minute halves, like a college game.
''I haven't been struggling with my shot lately, but I felt real good today,'' Gallagher said. ''I really loved playing in this game. I love competing against the Lehigh Valley Conference girls. Any time you play any of them, it's very competitive. I would have liked to win, but it was good to get to show my ability.''
Gallagher finished with more than 1,700 points in her high school career and was the Mountain Valley Conference and Via player of the year.
If she plays basketball in college, she will likely do it at the Division II level. She is considering Millersville, Shippensburg, West Chester and East Stroudsburg, with Millersville the front-runner.
While Gallagher had the most points in her game, Bethlehem Catholic's Andrea Veres had the key points.
Veres, who had a team-high 17 points, made a steal and layup and then hit a 3-pointer off another turnover for LVC East as East broke a 79-all tie and outscored the MVC 14-4 over the final 21/2 minutes.
Most of the other games weren't as close, but were still an enjoyable experience for the participants.
Parkland senior Ryan Carlon was just happy to be back out there.
His season was cut short by a dislocated shoulder suffered in a game against Freedom on Jan. 22.
He was healthy enough on Sunday to score a team-high 21 points for the LVC West, including five 3-pointers.
''This was a great time and a lot of fun to play with the same guys you play against all year,'' said Carlon, who will attend Syracuse. ''It was nice to be back out there after my injury. Your whole high school career goes by so quickly, but it was still a good ride.''
The biggest winners of the day were Via of the Lehigh Valley, the organization devoted to assisting people with disabilities, and a group of Special Olympics players who to show off what they can do in a special game.
Many of them participated in a clinic held last weekend by Hall of Fame coach Traci Cyr.
''Having that clinic last week and the little game we had today gives the high school kids a better understanding of why they're playing in this event and what Via is all about,'' said Cyr, who is the mother of an autistic child. ''We had about 30 kids at the clinic and about 20 of the all-star players helping out That was really great to see. We're just trying to figure out ways to add to this event.''
And, as long as the event continues, Northampton Community College would like to be the host.
''From our college's standpoint, it's great to show people from the high school community what we have here,'' NCC athletic director Troy Tucker said. ''Many of them are surprised. So many people have never been here before. Â… at least to our new gym. People have a certain image of what a community college looks like, but we change that perception when they come here. We've got great, first-class facilities and provide a great venue. So really, we feel as though it's the perfect marriage.''

NASCAR has postponed its race at Martinsville Speedway to Monday afternoon because of rain.
MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP)—NASCAR has postponed its race at Martinsville Speedway to Monday afternoon because of rain.
Showers lingered over the track in southwest Virginia on Sunday, and the absence of lights for night racing meant the window for racing was closing quickly.
NASCAR does not allow a race to start unless it’s feasible for the entire event to be run, and races on the shortest, oldest track in the Sprint Cup Series can take up to 4 hours.
The call to postpone was made about 90 minutes after the scheduled 1 p.m. start.

Grant sparks fourth-quarter run as Plymouth-Whitemarsh drops Penn Wood 58-51 in PIAA Class AAAA basketball final
Standing in an amped-up huddle with his Plymouth-Whitemarsh teammates, the fourth and final quarter about to begin, Whis Grant totally absorbed coach Jim Donofrio’s fiery message.
“It’s our time. It’s our time,” Grant recalled Donofrio saying. “We’re the better team. We’ve got to stand up and show it. We’ve got to present it.”
Within moments, Grant began presenting.
Scoring the first four points of the decisive fourth quarter, Grant triggered a 7-0 spurt that sparked P-W to a 58-51 victory over District 1 playmate Penn Wood in the title game of the PIAA Class AAAA basketball playoffs Saturday night.
The 6-0 senior finished with 17 points, a team-high 11 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots for the Colonials (30-2), who dropped an overtime decision to Penn Wood three weeks ago in the District 1-AAAA championship game.
“Oh, that hurt,” Grant said. “That hurt.”
P-W also received a monster performance from 6-11 Saint Joseph’s recruit C.J. Aiken, whose 19-point outing featured a banked trey that startled the BryceJordanCenter gathering. Aiken also grabbed seven boards and blocked five shots.
Aaron Brown, Tyree Johnson and Will Brown shared 44 points for Clyde Jones’ Patriots (27-4), who were chasing their second straight state title.
“I just think we had a bad night,” lamented Johnson. “An off night.”
Yet, Penn Wood led until the long-limbed Aiken’s follow flush pulled the Colonials even (34-34) midway through the third. Another Aiken finish gave P-W its first lead a few minutes later, but Will Brown’s lay-in leveled everything.
Temporarily.
Blasting out of the huddle with purpose – and lots of fire -- Grant’s daring drive and finish on the opening possession had the Colonials back in front quickly. Then, after a Johnson miss, Grant was fouled grabbing one of his many rebounds.
Two canned freebies later, a jacked P-W side was wheeling toward the school’s first state title since the 1997 Colonials collared PIAA gold at Hersheypark Arena.
“It feels good, as a senior, to go out and win a state championship,” said Grant, who scored eight points in the fourth quarter. “We showed it out there.
“We definitely showed it.”
“[Whis] played great,” Aiken said. “He’s been playing great this whole playoff, districts and states. He’s been playing good. He’s been aggressive. We needed that.”
After all, it was P-W’s time

BUTLER BEATS KANSAS STATE SATURDAY TO REACH FINAL FOUR NEXT WEEKEND!
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — It's an easy five-mile drive from the Butler campus to the site of its next game, in downtown Indianapolis. Still, it's hard to think of many programs that have taken a longer, more unlikely road to the Final Four.
Yes, the boys from Butler did it — defeating Kansas State 63-56 in the West Regional final Saturday to make their trip back home something much bigger than that.
The fifth-seeded Bulldogs, the team that plays in the fieldhouse where "Hoosiers" was filmed, are writing their own underdog story, even if they can't really be called underdogs anymore.
Gordon Hayward scored 22 points and Shelvin Mack had 16 to help Butler (32-4) win its 24th straight game and become the first school from a true, mid-major conference to make the Final Four since George Mason in 2006 — a trip that also ended in Indianapolis.
Trailing almost the entire game, No. 2 Kansas State (29-7) rallied to tie it at 54 with 3:09 remaining. But Butler didn't fold, it only got better. The Bulldogs scored the next nine points to seal the game before K-State guard Jacob Pullen's shot at the buzzer dropped — but offered no consolation.
Enrollment at Butler is in the 4,500 range, about 15 of whom have reminded everyone why college basketball captures America's heart this time every year.
They are weaving a story about the overlooked and under-appreciated getting their time in the limelight, the kind of tale every underdog, from Charlie Brown to Gene Hackman, has to love.
But make no mistake — this is not some scrappy, overmatched team that needed a break, no Danny and the Miracles, or Villanova shooting 79 percent to knock off mighty Georgetown.
This is a team that stood toe-to-toe with Syracuse on one night, then Kansas State the next, shutting down two power teams from power conferences with legitimate stars of their own.
Pullen and teammate Denis Clemente didn't score a point for Kansas State until 15 seconds were left in the first half, and it was no matter of luck. Rather, it was the tough, in-your-face defense of Ronald Nored and Willie Veasley that did it — smothering a pair of players who had combined for 53 points two nights earlier in a double-overtime win against Xavier.
Clemente finished with 18 and Pullen with 14, but they shot a combined 11 for 30.
Lucky teams also don't win the way Butler did. Much like in its 63-59 victory over Syracuse, the Bulldogs held the lead in this one for most of the night, but fell behind briefly toward the end.
Clemente made a 3-pointer with 4:49 left to cap an 8-0 run and give K-State its only lead of the game, 52-51. Teams like Butler are supposed to fold then, right?
Well, not quite.
Hayward got fouled going to the hole and made two free throws to take the lead back, and teammate Matt Howard made one more free throw to make it 54-52. Clemente dribbled for what seemed like forever for a layup to tie, and that was the last significant basket the Wildcats would make.
Butler took the lead on the next possession when Hayward — that rare NBA prospect playing at a mid-major — stretched his entire 6-foot-9 frame to not only collect a too-high, alley-oop pass from Nored, but collect himself and make the shot.
Pullen came back with an air ball and Butler pulled away from there, ending Kansas State's equally gritty quest — an effort that will certainly gain the Wildcats more cachet in a state that has long thought about the Jayhawks first.
Big man Curtis Kelly also had 14 points for Kansas State, which shot 38 percent for the game didn't make a basket outside of 15 feet in the first half.
Credit for that, once again, goes to the Bulldogs, coached by 33-year-old Brad Stevens, who has refused to buy into the underdog story.
Being a mid-major, he insists, is mainly about money and resources, not about 5-on-5 in a 40-minute game with nothing — or everything — on the line.
Stevens found the players who fit his style — players who like to work hard, don't back down from a challenge and don't care that the big schools didn't come chasing after them. They're players who loved Hinkle Fieldhouse, the home of the Bulldogs, but also a tourist stopover because it's where the 1980s classic "Hoosiers," starring Hackman, was filmed.
Players who appreciate it certainly appreciate team basketball, Stevens said, and now his team will play in a much bigger venue — Lucas Oil Stadium next Saturday against Michigan State or Tennessee. The stadium seats about 70,000 for basketball. Butler's home games — all of them — drew a total of about 90,000 all season.
A great underdog story, most of America will call it.
Good bet, though, that the boys from Butler won't settle with being happy to be there.

South Fayette edges Strawberry Mansion 49-47 in PIAA Class AA basketball final
Whether it’s 10, 20 or even 30 years from now, Tyler Henry will be rewinding and replaying one particular sequence.
A sequence that closed out a state title game – in his team’s favor.
Henry’s bucket and one last defensive stop propelled South Fayette past Strawberry Mansion 49-47 in the PIAA Class AA basketball championship Saturday afternoon at PennState’s Bryce Jordan Center.
Henry finished with 10 points – seven fewer than teammates Mike Lamberti and Patrick Zedreck – as Rich Bonnaure’s Lions (24-5) prevailed in a physical affair that featured 36 fouls, nine lead changes, 13 ties and countless collisions.
Devonte “D.J.” Newbill scored 15 points and Jamal Jones muscled for a double-double (10 points, 19 rebounds) for hard-luck Mansion (28-2), which tumbled in a state title game for the second time in three seasons.
“It happens,” Mansion coach Gerald Hendricks said. “We didn’t want this result. We have two of these [second-place trophies] now. I’d like to have placed one higher.”
Blame Henry.
Tied 47-all after Newbill buried a 15-footer with 37 seconds remaining, a determined Lamberti tried to pop South Fayette back in front by driving to the hoop. His challenged finish, however, glanced off the rim and tumbled to the floor.
With a Mansion player sprawled nearby – and no one else in the vicinity – Henry filled the breach in a flash and hoisted up a short J. Good!
“I saw the ball there and I saw a kid laying there,” Henry recalled. “I just knew I had to rush there to get there before he could get up and get it. And it was basic instinct just to pick it up and shoot it before I had a contested shot.”
“That was our rebound,” Hendricks lamented. “It was clearly that, but our momentum took us too far under and we just couldn’t get it. Little things like that, little miscues can make the difference in a two-point game.”
Hendricks’ club had one last chance – and Khalil Meadows got a terrific look from the foul line – but the ball smacked off the iron and the Lions’ Christian Brumbaugh tipped it to teammate Josh Patterson. Game over.
“Running down the court after I hit that shot, I was like, ‘We’re about to be state champions if we just stop them one more time,’”Henry said. “We managed to stop them and we’re state champions. I just can’t believe what happened.”
Might take 10, 20, even 30 years, but he will.

IUP falls in NCAA D-II men's basketball final
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Donnelle Booker scored 13 points, Austin Swift added 12 points and six rebounds, and Cal Poly Pomona won its first NCAA Division II championship with a 65-53 victory over Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday.
The Broncos led by double digits for most of the second half at the MassMutual Center, rebounding from a loss in last year's final to Findlay on a last second 3-pointer.
Cal Poly (28-6) won 21 of its final 22 games after starting the season 7-5. The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak for the Crimson Hawks (33-3) from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Swift was named the Elite Eight's Most Outstanding Player.
Darryl Webb had 12 points and 13 rebounds for IUP, while Akida McLain added 10 points, all in the second half, and seven rebounds.
Dahir Nasser had 12 points for the Broncos and joined Swift and Webb on the All-Tournament team. Taylor Witt and Matt Schneck of St. Cloud State also were honored.

Bishop Guilfoyle girls come up big early to claim second straight PIAA Class A title
STATE COLLEGE – Bishop Guilfoyle completed a rare perfect season Saturday afternoon by feasting on District 6 mate Northern Cambria in the opening 10 minutes.
The Marauders nabbed their second consecutive PIAA Class A girls' basketball championship, and third in four years, by galloping past the Colts 49-29 at Bryce Jordan Center.
It was the third meeting this season between the Colts and Marauders – the last one in the District 6 final went to overtime.
But this time it wasn't even close.
Bishop Guilfoyle dropped 10 of its first 15 shots, and Northern Cambria...well they missed a lot.
Before this one was 10 minutes old the Marauders were up 14, having no trouble getting easy buckets on the big floor in transition, and killing the Colts on the boards.
Guilfoyle (30-0) senior Alli Williams, who won her third PIAA gold medal, had 10 of her 16 points and five of her 14 rebounds by halftime.
“We knew their strength, so we did everything to make sure they could not penetrate,” Williams said. “We could not have played any better defensively. We really got into their heads. Plus we shot the ball well early.”
The 29 points scored by Northern Cambria (24-6) is the sixth lowest total in PIAA girls' history.
“You've got to convert off steals early, and we really struggled to put the ball in the hoop,” said Colts coach Eric Thomas, whose club shot 23 percent from the floor. “And Alli Williams is such a tough match-up for us. She's so strong and physical.”
Williams is clearly the Marauders' big gun, but the addition of freshman guard Halee Adams this season was a difference maker on several fronts. In this game Adams had 11 points, eight rebounds and a couple assists.
Ariel Rocco and Janae Dunchack accounted for 24 of the Colts' 29 points.
“It's been a lot of pressure all year with so much expected of you,” Williams said. “For my senior year, this was the best ending to a season I could have ever dreamed of.”

Dave Brown frontrunner for Liberty High School football coaching job; Bethlehem Catholic players transfer to Freedom
Wrestling is over. Spring sports are starting. It's not football season but that doesn't mean there isn't football news.
According to Express-Times scholastic sports editor Mike Blouse:
•Former Notre Dame coach Dave Brown appears to be the frontrunner to replace Tim Moncman at Liberty.
•Two Bethlehem Catholic players and one from Liberty have transferred to Freedom.
•Easton has scheduled District 1 power Pennsbury as its season opener.

Ellen/Idol = Dennis Miller/MNF
Ellen DeGeneres’ judging stint on American Idol reminds me of when Dennis Miller was on Monday Night Football. Both were established comedians trying to fit into a new genre. Like Miller on MNF, Ellen comes up with one or two funny lines a show, but mostly is out of her element.

Air of confidence at Lehigh
FROM KEITH GROLLER
After three sub-.500 seasons of 5-6, 5-6 and 4-7, you might think the goals would be modest at Lehigh as spring practice begins.
But the Mountain Hawks were talking championship on Friday as their first practice of spring ball wrapped up.
Maybe it's a carryover effect from a very exciting and successful basketball season on South Mountain.
The confidence is genuine, however, and there are some reasons for it.
While they will miss a few guys, particularly Matt Cohen and B.J. Benning on defense, most of the key components of last year's team are back. And last year's team, despite its overall record, was competitive virtually every week.
Only a 21-point loss to national champion Villanova and a 14-point defeat to Harvard could be considered lopsided.
There were near-misses within the Patriot League against both Colgate and Holy Cross.
All of that said, mere morale victories this year would be unacceptable.
The schedule is brutal. Drake, Villanova, New Hampshire, Harvard, Princeton and Fordham (in its first year as a non-Patriot League team) comprise the out-of-conference slate of games.
There are six home games tucked in a seven-game stretch, which is good, but three straight road games at the end which is not so good, including the always much-anticipated trip to Fisher Stadium.
There's a sense, however, that something good is going to happen. The players, for the most part, love Coen. They are glad he and most of the staff is back.
And they're glad to have back Dave Cecchini, who played a major part as coach during Lehigh's golden era from 1998-2001, a four-year stretch in which the Mountain Hawks went 45-5 and won three NCAA I-AA playoff games. Cecchini, in his old role as offensive coordinator, seemed right at home on Friday.
But there's a lot of work to be done, a lot of players who need to get better and a lot of improvement to be made with the execution.
"It's wonderful to be back on the field," Coen said Friday night. "The attitude and enthusiasm was great. We have a lot of kids out there. We only graduated 12 and I think on the roster right now we have 77. Our numbers have been the best they have been in the spring."
As for how things are working out between old friends Coen and Cecchini, who everybody knows went for the same job back in late 2005, well, it seems like old times.
"We have a lot of respect for each other and are good friends," Coen said. "I knew it would be a seamless transition. We've been through this together before. Dave and I saw how things could turn around when we were on Kevin Higgins' staff. We won a league championship in Kevin's second year [1995] and then went through a 5-6 and 4-7 season before we took off [12-1 in 1998].
"Dave and I have always stayed in touch. We're excited to get him back here and I think he's excited to be here."
I imagine Lehigh fans, frustrated by three straight losing seasons, will hold their excitement for awhile.
But good things are blowing in the wind at Lehigh.
