Veterans Day 2010 events in the Lehigh Valley

WILLIAMS TWP. | The Williams Township Veterans Memorial Committee will hold a Veterans Day commemoration 11 a.m. Thursday at the Veterans Memorial at the Williams Township Municipal Park, 655 Cider Press Road. Roy Fox, a World War II veteran and one of the township’s most senior veterans, will offer reflections on the day. Nancy Ackerman, a committee member, will offer the welcome and prayer. A wreath will be laid at the memorial.

PALMER TWP. | The Joint Veterans Council, Forks of the Delaware, along with the Easton Memorial Day parade council will conduct its annual Veterans Day ceremony 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Oak Grove Memorial Garden, Upper Hackett Park, Palmer Township. The main speaker is Thomas Hess, USMC and Naval Reserve. In case of rain, the event is moved to the pavilion at the end of the park.

EASTON | A Veteran’s Day memorial service will be held at Northampton Memorial Shrine for Thomas Bohn, a Wilson Borough native who died while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II when the USS Flier submarine sank in 1944. Donations were gathered in September to set up a memorial marker. The service will be held 11 a.m. at the shrine at 3051 Green Pond Road in Easton. WILSON BOROUGH | The Northampton County Detachment, Marine Corps League, along with Brown & Lynch American Legion PostNo. 9 will render military honors 1 p.m. Thursday on Washington Boulevard, at the four war memorials between South 18th and South 21st streets. The Wilson Area High School Drum and Bugle Corps, along with elementary school students, will participate.

PHILLIPSBURG | The Phillipsburg Area Veterans Day Tribute will be held Sunday at Phillipsburg High School. Doors open at noon. A fly-in, weather permitting, will take place at 12:30 on the high school baseball field. Vintage and recent military vehicles will be on display. The tribute starts at 1 p.m. in the gym. All who served will be honored. Twenty-one veterans who left school to enter the military and did not receive a high school diploma will graduate. Performances scheduled include the Phillipsburg High School band and choirs as well as the Colonial Musketeer Fife and Drum Corps. Korean War veterans will be honored.

MANSFIELD TWP. | Mansfield Lodge No. 36, F&AM, is hosting a Veterans Day program at 7 p.m. Thursday at the lodge, 275 Route 31 North. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Brother Douglas Koeppen plans to tell the story of four World War II chaplains who sacrificed their lives so others would live. It will be accompanied by a short video.

PHILLIPSBURG | A tribute to veterans will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Shappell Park, Main Street. Allen Schaarsmidt, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, Vietnam veteran and double purple heart recipient, is keynote speaker. Vince Pettinelli will play taps and Patti Lutz will sing. Bernardine-May Legion will provide honor guard. For information, call 908-859-0886.

EASTON | Robert Faro, local veteran and father, will be the guest speaker at a special program honoring veterans at noon Wednesday at the Easton Area Public Library. Faro, of Upper Nazareth Township, will talk about his 19-year-old son Pfc. Joseph Faro, U.S. Marine Corps, and his ongoing recovery from wounds suffered during an IED blast in Marjah, Afghanistan. A local veteran’s advocate, Faro is active in raising awareness of the struggles faced by U.S. service members and their families. For more information, call 610-258-2917, ext. 307.

RIEGELSVILLE, Pa. | Boy Scout Troop 127, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, is hosting a Veterans Day and Flag Retirement ceremony 7 p.m. Wednesday at the American Legion Post No. 950, Ash Lane. Veterans will introduce themselves and be recognized for service. The public is invited to bring old flags for proper disposal. Ashes from the flags are returned and spread across the graves of deceased veterans in the Riegelsville area. For information, call 610-570-4156 or 610-749-2712.

BETHLEHEM | The Steelworkers Veteran’s Memorial Committee is hosting a Veterans Day ceremony 10 a.m. Thursday at Third and Filmore streets. David A. Christian, the most decorated and youngest U.S. officer in the Vietnam War, will be speaker. For information, call 610-791-1351.

ALLENTOWN | A Veterans Day celebration will be held 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lehigh County Senior Center, 1633 Elm St. Entertainment will be provided by the Krazy Kids and a concert will be performed by Lehigh Valley Pops Orchestra. HELLERTOWN | The Hellertown American Legion will host its annual Veterans Day event at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Union Cemetery, 85-89 Main St. The event is held rain or shine.
