ESPN Report: Phillips fired as Cowboys coach

FROM THE MORNING CALL

ESPN is reporting that Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has fired coach Wade Phillips, one day after Dallas fell to 1-7 in a 45-7 loss to Green Bay on natioal television.

Phillips will be replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, sources told the network.

Phillips was given a two-year extension last winter after leading the Cowboys to their first playoff win in over 10 years. But he couldn't survive a disastrous beginning in a season that began with expectations of the Cowboys becoming the first NFL team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium. Dallas will host the Super Bowl in its new $1-billion stadium next February.

Jones, who said repeatedly that Phillips would finish out the season, has never fired a coach in-season since purchasing the team in 1989.

Phillips was 35-23 with two NFC East titles during his tenure in Dallas. He is 83-65 as an NFL head coach.
