FROM KEITH GROLLER
The lightning and heavy rain came at Patriots Park on Tuesday night, but not before Pleasant Valley delivered its own storm.
The Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and were still batting with two out and a runner at first when play was suspended in the opener of two scheduled District 11 4A softball semifinals.
Play will resume at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Pates Park with the Bears owning the 4-0 lead.
The other semifinal between Northampton and Parkland will follow at approximately 7 p.m.
Pleasant Valley, the Mountain Valley Conference champs, escaped a jam in the top of the first.
And then in the bottom half of the opening frame, Brittney Bonser and Madison Shaneberger had RBI doubles and Tracey Deubler and Kelsey Miczak chipped in run-scoring singles before play was stopped.
Rain also affected play in the 2A semifinal doubleheader at Parkland where Catasauqua and Salisbury at least got started.
The Rough Riders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Hannah Edwards had a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error before scoring on a RBI single Danielle Lilly. Catty went on to load the bases, but didn’t score.
In the top of the second, Salisbury had runners at first and second with one out when play was halted. That game will pick up from the point of interruption at 5 p.m. Wednesday with the semifinal between North Schuylkill and Pen Argyl to follow.
The 3A semifinal between Southern Lehigh and Wilson at Northwestern was stopped as the top of the second inning was set to start. That game will resume at that point at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The other 3A semifinal between Bethlehem Catholic and Palmerton never got started. It was rescheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Moravian.
