FROM MORNING CALL

Dennis Rivas is proud to be a part of Dieruff's wrestling revival.
Last weekend, the Huskies enjoyed their best District 11 tournament in 45 years, qualifying four wrestlers for the PIAA Class 3A Northeast Regional.
On Friday, all four of the Dieruff qualifiers — Jeremy Allen, Jayden Reyes, Rivas and Jovon Reyes — advanced through the quarterfinal round of the regional tournament at Liberty High School. Each of the Husky quartet returns to Memorial Gymnasium Saturday for the 11 a.m. semifinals.
"I'm excited and a little surprised," said Rivas, a senior 182-pounder. "This is a big tournament. I didn't know how I'd do and I didn't know how the team would do."

Easton Area High School swimmer Amanda Rosa propels relay team to District 11 gold

http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/02/amanda_rosa_lead_easton_girls.html#incart_river_default

FROM EXPRESS TIMES

Amanda Rosa wanted to make a statement with her relay split. The Easton Area High School junior may have done just that at the District 11 Class AAA Swimming Championships tonight at Parkland High School.
Rosa swam 29.84 seconds in the breaststroke to bring her 200 medley relay squad from third to first. From there, Nathalie Paczes and Tara Stahlecker held off a charging Freedom team to win the 200 medley relay title in 1:48.73
"I wanted to show that I'm here and the breaststroke is my main thing and I'm going for the gold," said Rosa, who is the third seed in Saturday's individual 100 breaststroke.
Rosa swam more than three seconds faster than Freedom's Kelly Kopko to give the Red Rovers a commanding lead. Kopko jumped in the water with a half-second lead after the first leg. If Rosa hadn't posted the time she did, Freedom would have likely won a second straight title. The Patriots clocked in at 1:49.06.

Lehigh football team completes recruiting class by adding two, including another QB

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Here's the release from the Lehigh sports information department:
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Andy Coen has finalized the Mountain Hawks’ 2014 recruiting class with the addition of two student-athletes who will join the program in the fall. Coen has added quarterback Brendan Craven and defensive back Chris Sarni to a class that now includes 21 players who will be freshmen in the fall plus transfer running back Brandon Yosha from Miami.
Both Craven and Sarni hail from Massachusetts and come to Lehigh after taking post-graduate years at preparatory schools.
Craven is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback from Pembroke, Mass. He attended Boston College High School before taking a post-grad year at Choate Rosemary Hall. Craven is coming off a season in which he completed 110-of-168 passes for 1,069 yards and ten touchdowns, while also rushing 62 times for 402 yards and five scores. He was tabbed by ESPN Recruiting as a top 100 pocket passer in the nation.
A two-time Scholar-Athlete award recipient, Craven quarterbacked Boston College High School to three conference championships and the Massachusetts Division I State title in 2012. He plans to study business at Lehigh.
Sarni was a standout defensive back at Wellesley High School before moving on to the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety was a team captain and team most valuable player at Wellesley and was recognized as an All-Conference performer as well as an All-Eastern Massachusetts selection.
A four-year honor roll student, Sarni intends to study in Lehigh's College Arts and Sciences.
“We have now wrapped up our 2014 class and I’m happy to welcome Chris and Brendan as new members of this class,” Coen said. “Chris is a versatile athlete who established himself as a defensive back during his time at Loomis Chaffee. He will be good addition to a strong group of secondary players we recruited this year.
He continued, “Brendan joins us from Choate Rosemary Hall where he was a very productive quarterback. He will add depth to the quarterback position.”
Lehigh’s original 19 player class was announced on February 5 with defensive back Marc Raye-Redmond added early last week. The Mountain Hawks’ incoming class now includes four defensive backs, and two student-athletes who project as quarterbacks in Craven and Matt Timochenko.
The Mountain Hawks will begin their spring practice segment on Friday March 21.

And here's the player of the week:
ANTHONY HOLMES -- PIUS X
When most people think about Pius X, they think first about point guard and leading scorer Eric Marbury.
However, Anthony Holmes has also been a steady contributor for the Royals and a major reason why they’re playing for the District 11 Class A crown on Friday night.
Holmes, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, does a little bit of everything for A.J. DePue’s team.Anthony Holmes 002
“Anthony had a bad game for us Tuesday night [in a 71-50 semifinal win over Pottsville Nativity] and he still scored 16 points,” DePue said. “He can shoot the 3 or he can get to the rim. At 5-7, he has great hops and can  hang on the rim. He gets up there and gets rebounds for us. He makes plays that have us coaches looking at each other. Sometimes, we’re in awe of Anthony.”
DePue said that Holmes, who plays two-guard spot, has an outside shot of reaching 1,000 points in his career, depending on how long the Pius X season lasts.
“He’s a great kid … an ‘A’ student,” DePue said. “He’s respectful, polite. He is not one of the guys who is loud. His shows leadership with his play. He’s also a defensive stopper for us. He usually guards the opposing team’s point guard because he’s so quick that he can disrupt the opponent’s offense.”
DePue said Holmes has an opportunity to play at the next level.
“He has been accepted at Neumann College in Philadelphia and can play there and he has a chance at a couple of Division II schools,” DePue said. “His size hurts him, but he has all of the quickness and skills needed to compete at a high level.”

For Pete's sake: It was nice to have former Lehigh football coach back in town

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/

FROM KEITH GROLLER

A break from basketball gave me a chance to catch up with former Lehigh and current Ball State coach Pete Lembo tonight at the NIKE Coach of the Year clinic in Fogelsville.
Had a chance to interview him before his presentation and then sat through all of the hour-and-20-minute of  session which was entitled "Building A Program From the Ground Up."
It was impressive, just like Lembo's work at Elon and Ball State since leaving Lehigh.
Even though Lembo's speech was the last presentation of the day and didn't begin until 9:15 at night and there was beer and pizza awaiting the guys who were there, Lembo kept their attention.
Lafayette coach Frank Tavani, former Nazareth head coach and Lehigh assistant Rob Melosky and former Whitehall coach and former Lehigh assistant Tony Trisciani were all there as was Walt Whitehead, the son of the late John Whitehead, Lehigh's legendary coach.  think everybody was impressed.4S-BORDA
I.covered Lembo (seen at left with former Becahi quarterback Mark Borda during a 2004 game) in his five seasons at Lehigh from from 2001-05 and I saw a different side of him tonight.
I saw him as a polished, articulate, organized and yet entertaining and genuine speaker who seemed to truly want to make everyone in the room a better coach and person after listening to him.
It's no wonder to me why Lembo, who was 44-14 in his time at Lehigh, has had even more success at both Elon and Ball State and why he may be one of the hottest commodities in the college coaching profession at the age of 43.
Looking back, Lembo wasn't appreciated fully at Lehigh, in part because he followed the charismatic Kevin Higgins, who struggled in his early years on South Mountain but got things turned around in a big way..
When Lembo went 11-1 and won the Eddie Robinson Award in his first season, people sniped that he won with "Higgins' team."
And when Lehigh lost four games the following season and three each of the next three, it was like the sky was falling.
But as Lembo said Thursday night, it was a learning experience for him and there were limited resources at Lehigh. It was difficult to keep the program at an elite level, and while Lehigh didn't go to the playoffs every year of his enture, the program never slipped very far on his watch even as he was losing quality coaches like Tom Gilmore and Dave Cecchini to other programs.
Lembo also admitted that he's a more seasoned, experienced and poised coach than he was in this first few years at Lehigh. He has learned how to deal with adversity much better.
He spelled out many of these things during his session and he talked about the need to fill your program with high character players and high character coaches who leave their egos at the door.
He talked about a lot of different things that made a lot of sense.
This wasn't a heavy X-and-O session. It was about setting the tone for your program, even the way you dress matters, he said.
And, he even talked to the coaches about the need to take a vacation once in awhile and take care of themselves.
All in all, I was impressed and so was clinic director Jim Tkach, who said it was one of the best sessions he had ever heard in 11 years of the clinic.
I will have much more on Lembo's return to the Valley -- and yes, he still knew his way around the area -- in the print edition of Saturday's Morning Call.
National championship coach Jimbo Fisher of Florida State and new Penn State coach James Franklin are among the guests on Friday at the clinich who goes through Saturday at the Holiday Inn Conference Center.
