Winning a football game is difficult if you're playing uphill. That's the situationCatasauqua found itself in this afternoon in Philadelphia.
Early turnovers put the Rough Riders in a hole they couldn't climb out of. The result was a 49-0 loss to Imhotep Charter in a PIAA Class AA quarterfinal game at Benjamin Johnson Memorial Stadium.

Parkland High School football team falls to St. Joseph's Prep in the PIAA Class AAAA playoffs

FROM EXPRESS TIMES

The Parkland High School football team was treading on familiar ground.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, history repeated itself.
Parkland stumbled out of the starting gate this afternoon and for the second straight season, wound up falling short in its bid to advance in the state playoffs.

Auburn football team uses 100-plus yard return of field-goal attempt to shock No. 1 Alabama

FROM EXPRESS TIMES

Chris Davis raced 100-plus yards with a missed field-goal attempt for a touchdown on the final play to lift No. 4 Auburn to a 34-28 victory over No. 1 Alabamatoday.
Davis caught the ball about 9 yards deep in the end zone after freshman Adam Griffith's 57-yard attempt fell short. He then sprinted down the left sideline and cut back with nothing but teammates around him in a second straight hard-to-fathom finish for the Tigers (11-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference).

Lafayette College football team gets run over by New Hampshire in FCS first-round playoff game

FROM EXPRESS TIMES

Lafayette College lost the coin flip of today's Football Championship Subdivision first-round playoff game at New Hampshire and things went rapidly downhill from there.
It didn't start well, with a monster sack of Drew Reed on the very first play.
The middle wasn't too good either with New Hampshire owning a 31-point halftime lead.

Imhotep Charter athleticism, depth too much for Catasauqua

http://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/mc-catasauqua-imhotep-charter-football-1130-20131130,0,5052792.story

FROM MORNING CALL

PHILADELPHIA — Deandre Scott positioned himself in the middle of the field waiting for the final defensive call from the Imhotep Charter sideline.
It never came, so he drifted back in coverage as Catasauqua's third-down play started.
The senior defensive back bound for Arizona State surveyed the field once, twice, then peeked in at Catasauqua quarterback Zack Bradley as he released the ball.

Parkland football team doomed by slow start in loss to St. Joe's Prep

http://www.mcall.com/sports/varsity/mc-parkland-st-joes-prep-piaa-football-20131130,0,6798446.story

FROM MORNING CALL

After falling in a huge hole in its PIAA Class 4A quarterfinal last season, Parkland was focused on jumping out to a better start this time around.
St. Joe's Prep instead pushed the Trojans into catch-up mode early.
The District 12-champion Hawks forced Parkland to punt on its first seven possessions Saturday afternoon while building a three-touchdown cushion. The Trojans moved within two scores midway through the fourth quarter but could not come all the way back, falling 21-10 in a PIAA 4A football quarterfinal at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.
St. Joe's Prep (10-3) advanced to the PIAA 4A semifinals next week, when it will take on District 1 champion Neshaminy (13-1). Parkland ended its season 12-2, becoming the fifth straight District 11 4A champion to bow out to the Philadelphia Catholic League champion in the state quarterfinals.

Stop No. 12 on the preseason high school boys basketball tour: These Falcons will win more than the ones in Atlanta

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Stopped in to chat with Jason Weaver the other night at Salisbury. Weaver is one of the rising stars in the local coaching ranks. Soft-spoken, low-key guy, but he gets his message across to his players
The former Saucon Valley product has graduated a lot of talented players in recent years, but has kept Salisbury at a high level.
It looks like more of the same this year, and I must say that I am glad that the Bill Paulik logo is back on the court at Salisbury. After that wonderful ceremony a couple of years ago, that recognition should be front and center. It was missing last year after the floor had to be replaced, but it's back and that's good news.
I think Bill Paulik, whose first game as head coach at Salisbury was 50 years ago (it was postponed by the Kennedy assassination), would like this current Falcons team which will scrap and claw every night.
Unfortunately for this program, they are in the Colonial League's toughest division and also are a 3A program, which will make districts a difficult road to navigate with Central Catholic and Bethlehem Catholic lomming.
But Weaver, as usual, is not making excuses and is embracing all challenges.
SALISBURY
Coach: Jason Weaver (sixth season, 84-42)
Last year: 17-10 overall, 12-4 CL.
Postseason: Beat Wilson in District 11 3A quarterfinal, lost to CCHS in semis, beat Pottsville in consolation game. Lost to Imhotep Charter 79-34 in first round of state tournament.
New on the staff: Adam Young as a JV and varsity assistant.
Scrimmages: Last Saturday, scrimmaged Panther Valley. Scrimmaged Pius X and Nazareth on Friday.
Openers: Friday at home vs. Blue Mountain; league opener, Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Palisades.
Key date: 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 at home vs. Emmaus.
Players to watch: Sr. C Austin Uhl; Sr. G/F Justin Aungst; Sr. G Brad Vangeli; Sr. G/F Eddie Sanchez; Sr. G Naveed Hadian; Jr. G Brendan Reichenbach; Jr. F Bryce Fairclough.
What's to like: Uhl and Aungst are returning starters and Weaver likes the fact that he's got five seniors with experience who will provide leadership. "They will lead by example," Weaver said. He also likes that the kids play hard all the time, especially in going for loose balls and hustling on defense.
What's to worry about: The Falcons don't possess a lot of height and have to go small if Uhl, who is 6-foot-5, gets in foul trouble. "And there are big bodies in our league that will pose some matchup problems," Weaver said. He also doesn't know if the team will be consistent with its outside shooting.
Quotable: "As always the Colonial League is going to be competitive, but we have a team here that in my mind can compete with anybody in the league on a given night," Weaver said. "Our goal, like it is every year, is to get into the league playoffs and see what happens. We've got a good group of seniors who were in seventh grade when I first got there, and they've been with me for a long time. I'm excited.
"We're going to play everybody in our division before Christmas so we have to start strong. We also play a tough nonleague schedule. We're playing in the Parkland Christmas tournament. We play Emmaus here on a Saturday in January and the following Saturday we play Pottsville up at Martz Hall. We also play Blue Mountain and Northampton. We're playing a lot of bigger schools, which will be good for us."

TV NEWS NOVEMBER 30

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2013/11/sitcomsonline-digest-nbc-thursday-night.html

Happy Thanksgiving weekend, and welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! It's a slow week for us this week due to the holiday, but we've got all of your regular features as usual. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • NBC is facing a serious dilemma with their Thursday night lineup, as the historically top-rated lineup came in at a historically low sixth place in the ratings race last week, falling behind even The CW in key demographics last week. Could it be time for a major shakeup in this lineup? (LA Times)
  • Many TV writers of the 70's, 80's, and 90's still interested in working just aren't finding work on today's networks in line with their style, but as it turns out, China may be the perfect place to develop new series like the ones they wrote for in the past. Sitcom writers such as Marilyn Anderson (Murphy Brown andThe Jeffersons) and Michael Elias (Head of the Class and The Bill Cosby Show) are just a few among thousands of other writers of past American hit series working with a Chinese production company to bring high quality productions to a nation that is claimed to be lacking in great stories for television. (The Hollywood Reporter)
  • On Sunday's episode of Family Guy, fans were given one of the most shocking deaths to ever occur in an animated series as one of the major characters was killed off. This has caused quite an outrage from fans on the internet, even inspiring one of the largest online petitions ever revolving around the plot of a TV series. But is it all real, or  a complicated publicity stunt to spike ratings? (LA Times)
  • Actor Jay Leggett, who appeared as a cast member on the final season of In Living Color, died this week at the age of 50. (TV Guide)
  • MeTV is adding a pair of classic Sid & Marty Krofft series to their Saturday morning lineup beginning December 29, with the addition of H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Just before the April premiere of the sixth season of the Showtime series, Lionsgate is set to release Nurse Jackie - Season Five on DVD and Blu-ray on February 18. As usual, the set will contain plenty of special features.
  • eOne Entertainment is prepared to bring a somewhat forgotten '80s syndicated gem to DVD with their release of Monsters - The Complete Series. For those unfamiliar with the series, it was a horror anthology series from the same producer who previously brought fans the syndicated series Tales from the Darkside.

HS football picks: Will this be another District 12 doomsday?

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Last Dec. 1, a promising Saturday just like this one, Pen Argyl was pasted by Imhotep Charter 54-7 in Slatington in the state quarterfinals , while about 80 miles away at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Parkland was throttled by La Salle 28-7.
Six days later, Central Catholic was routed by Archbishop Wood, 36-6.
Imhotep, La Salle and Archbishop Wood are all Philadelphia teams from District 12 and District 12's entrance into the PIAA playoffs has certainly proven to be problematic for our teams.
Can that scenario change today?
Parkland offers the most complete team in our area this season with multiple weapons on offense, a rugged offensive line and a fast-closing defense.
It's hard to believe that the Trojans can't match up with St. Joe's Prep.
Catasauqua, on the other hand, features the area's best quarterback in my opinion in Zack Bradley and has several explosive weapons.
It's hard to believe Catty won't at least score and score plenty against Imhotep, The big question is can the Roughies stop them?
Parkland and Catty are both well-coached teams with staffs featuring some of the best minds we have in football.
Again, with these kids and these coaches, we have figure to have a chance to compete against what many people consider to be all-star teams from the Philadelphia area.
How will it turn out today? Well, I am optimistic, but I was optimistic last year, too.
I think Parkland breaks through and ends a four-year losing streak for our 4A teams against District 12.
Parkland becomes the first District 11 4A team since Liberty in its state championship year of 2008 to reach the state semifinals with a 34-21 win over St. Joe's Prep. Neshaminy next week figures to be a handful for the Trojans, but right now I am sure they'd love to have to worry about that game.
Catty has the offense that can strike for big plays against any high school team. They will score. But it will be enough? The Roughies have a chance to pull a surprise that will be talked about for decades.
They will give it a great shot, there's no doubt about that.
But I see them coming up just short.
Imhotep 42, Catasauqua 28.
A 3-1 record on Thanksgving Day leaves me at 200-55 for the season. Here's hoping I am wrong on the Roughies score today. Enjoy the games.

Former Dieruff girls and boys basketball coach and 1,000-point scorer dies

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Saunders "Foo" Belfield, who was the first African-American basketball coach in Lehigh Valley sports history, died on Friday according to reliable sources from an apparent heart attack.
Belfield, who was one of the most iconic figures in Dieruff basketball history, was a 1975 Husky graduate and went on to play at Tennessee State under legendary coach Eddie Martin.
As a player at Dieruff, he scored 1,121 points while playing for Dick Schmidt and Terry German.
He then coached the Husky girls from 1988-92 and his teams went 35-81.
He was more successful as the school's boys basketball coach from 1996-2002, posting a 76-76 mark in six seasons and leading Dieruff to the 1996-97 East Penn Conference championship.
Also during Belfield's stint, Dieruff made the 2000 District 11 4A finals and posted a PIAA first-round victory over heavily favored Harrisburg. Anthony Ross, current coach at Penn State-Lehigh Valley, led Dieruff that year. Ross thrived under Belfield, registering a school-record, 1,419 points.

Dawgs Roll to Eastern Final

http://www.easternpafootball.com/news/dawgs-roll-to-eastern-final/

Written by:  on Saturday, November 30th, 2013
After his Bulldogs rolled over the Bison of Clearfield, George Curry summed up his teams efforts: “You have to be able to run the ball this time of the year.” Berwick, led by C.J.Curry (147 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Dain Kowalski (119 yards rushing and 1 touchdown) plowed their way to the Eastern AAA final with over 300 yards rushing to top the Bison 44-7 at Mihalik Stadium in Lock Haven.
Clearfield took the early momentum stopping Berwick on the first series of the game in three plays. The first Bison drive wasn’t much more successful except that they pinned the Dawgs deep in their own territory on the ensuing punt. Two plays later Ryan Lezzer intercepted a Curry pass at the 40 and returned it to the Berwick 19. Christian Lezzer then called his own number 4 times, going in from 4 yards out to get the early lead. It was the last time the Bison would score, but certainly not their last chance.

Bishop McDevitt wins fourth consecutive District 3 AAA final with rout of Manheim Central

http://www.d11football.com/news/11/30/bishop-mcdevitt-wins-fourth-consecutive-district-3-aaa-final-with-rout-of-manheim-central/

By Josh Funk, Pa Football News;
HERSHEY, Pa. – Devon Deibler finally fits in. Finally.
The McDevitt senior offensive lineman was a transfer into the program before the start of the 2013 season, but he’d never tasted what it felt like to win a District 3 football championship in his scholastic football career. Devon’s father, Rob, won a district title as quarterback at Steelton-Highspire and then turned the Rollers into a Class A powerhouse as its head coach, capping a dominant Rollers’ run with a pair of PIAA titles in 2007 and 2008.
There’s a Fort Knox-esque sized plot of gold in the Deibler household. Now, Devon can stake a claim to owning some of it.
“I’m officially a Deibler now,” No. 76 joked postgame. “I have that district title. I can go to all of the (family) reunions now.”
In the process, Deibler and Bishop McDevitt bounced Manheim Central like it was an ugly stepsister.
Bishop McDevitt (13-1) gouged Manheim Central (13-1) for 561 yards, including 364 on the ground, and moved to 12-0 in District 3 AAA playoff games since 2010 with a 48-7 triumph Friday night at Hersheypark Stadium. The victory gave McDevitt its 11th D3 title overall, fourth in a row, and sixth in Class AAA. Manheim Central, meanwhile, fell to 16-3 in district title games, sustaining its first defeat since a 15-7 setback to West York in the 2008 title game.
Bishop McDevitt will advance to the PIAA semifinals, where it will face District 10 champion Cathedral Prep (13-0). The Ramblers have won 28 consecutive games and are the defending PIAA AAA champion.

FROM THE PATCH

By Jack Tobias

Monday's starting date for deer hunting season may be a little later than usual, but the state Game Commission is predicting that the wait for the 750,000 hunters expected to take to the woods will be worth it.

The commission "is tracking deer populations as stable or increasing in nearly all of the state’s 23 wildlife-management units," the commission reported on its website.

Stop No. 11 on HS boys basketball preview tour: Keeping up with the Jones's at Whitehall

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/

FROM KEITH GROLLER

As we continue our 18 teams in 18 days preseason high school boys basketball tour, we had a quick stop at Whitehall where I got a couple of minutes with head coach Jeff Jones.
The Zephyrs have been a solid program, but have had trouble getting back to that championship level where they were in 2004 and 2005 when they won back-to-back Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 4A titles, the only LVC program to accomplish the feat.
Whitehall is coming off a successful football season, and while Jones supports the Zephyrs football team, it may be a good thing for the basketball program that Whitehall is no longer involved in the state tournament because one of its key players, Chad Rex, plays both sports.Stroudsburg-whitehall-boys-basketball-0220-4He's seen below in the white uniformn chasing down the ball in a district playoff against Stroudsburg last February.
And speaking of football, it's always nice to talk with a fellow Rams fan like Jones. He, like me, is excited about the future of the Rams after back-to-back wins over Indy and Chicago.
More importantly, he's upbeat about the Whitehall season. Here's a look:
WHITEHALL
Coach: Jeff Jones (seventh season, 73-72)
Last year: 12-11 overall, 7-7 LVC.
Postseason: Lost to Stroudsburg 59-57 in the first round of the District 11 4A tournament.
Scrimmages: At Stroudsburg at 9 a.m. Saturday; Wm. Tennant at Whitehall on Tuesday, 4 p.m.
Openers: At Freedom in the Yasso-Rothrock tournament on Sat., Dec. 7.
Key date: Tuesday, Dec. 10 vs. Hazleton.
Players to watch: Jr. PG Chad Rex;; Jr. C Brett Radocha; Sr. G Aaron Keglovits; Sr. F Matt Melosky; Jr. G Jake Meyer .
What's to like: The attitude has been terrific, according to Jones, and what he is most pleased about is the team's depth. "We haven't always had that," he said. "I really think we can use 10 guys." Because of that depth, look for the Zephs to be more aggressive on defense and go man-to-man and apply some fullcourt pressure. "The kids are excited about and we can do it because we have a little more athleticism," Jones said. But he also added that Whitehall won't totally abandon its trademark matchup zone defense.
What's to worry about: Jones said that he hopes to find a rotation during his two scrimmages. "We need to find out who fits best and where, and also when," he said. "We need to get them acclimated to everything before we play the first game, but I still think we are ahead of where we were at this point last season."
Quotable: "Things are going really well," Jones said. "We've got some new faces in the gym which is good to see. A couple of guys who haven't played have decided to play again. Our league is ridiculously good, however. In recent years, we've struggled to get to .500 and into the playoffs and we treat every league game like a playoff game. But especially this year, it's a tough league. Everyone is extremely well-coached and there are a lot of talented kids out there. It's going to be great."

Come Friday night, those caught in a traffic jam on a certain stretch of Allentown’s Lehigh Parkway probably won’t be complaining.
The city announced the start of the 18th season of “Lights in the Parkway,” a holiday light display that spans more than a mile along the parkway. A trip through the display has become a tradition for many in the Lehigh Valley. Organizers say it has drawn close to 2 million people since it debuted in 1996. Last holiday season, nearly 20,000 vehicles passed through.

Easton over P ‘burg 16-7

http://www.d11football.com/news/11/28/easton-over-p-burg-16-7/

By David Mika, Easternpafootball. com;
EASTON – Easton Area’s Kyle Bambary rushed for 133-yards to lead the Red Rovers over Phillipsburg in the 107th Annual Turkey Day game at Fisher Field Thursday morning.
After giving up 42 points last weekend to Parkland, it was Easton’s defense that set the tone today. On P’Burg’s first drive of the game, Cameron Casciole sacked Phillipsburg’s Tyler Troxell to end their drive.
After the P’Burg punt, Easton went 45-yards on four plays to take a 7-0 lead over Phillipsburg. Shane Simpson had runs of 5 and 23 and Bambary finished the drive off with a two-yard touchdown run with 7:40 left in the first quarter.
Late in the first half, Easton’s kicker Matt Semanick had a 26-yard field goal hit the left upright. Easton still led 7-0 with 2:43 remaining in the first half.
Phillipsburg’s Joe Maso fumbled the ball and Joey Ford recovered it on the P’Burg 33.
Easton had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Semanick. The Red Rovers went into halftime with a 10-0 lead.
