Lots of local athletes receive all-league honors; Wear is player of the year
http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/
FROM KEITH GROLLER
My inbox overfloweth with good news for area athletes who have received all-league accolades for the just completed regular seasons in their respective leagues.
Among them:
In softball, Misericordia freshman Kristi Seiler (Northern Lehigh) was named first-team all-Freedom Conference all-star and named the rookie of the year. Seiler led the team in RBIs (37) and doubles (14) and was second in batting (.400), slugging (.633), on-base percentage (.447), hits (48), home runs (4) and total bases (76).
Delaware Valley College sophomore shortstop Jackie Wear (Northwestern Lehigh) was named the Freedom Conference Player of the Year. Wear is among the league leaders in batting average (.496), hits (57), doubles (18), total bases (101), steals (2), home runs (eight), runs scored (38).
DeSales senior outfielder Brianna Chilcoat (Northampton) was named to the all-Freedom Conference first team and DeSales junior third baseman Julie Brugger (Liberty) was named to the second team. Chilcoat. Chilcoat batted .322 with a team-high 31 runs scored and 15 steals. Brugger batted .358 with 13 doubles and team-highs in home runs (5) and RBIs (30). Brugger only struck out nine times in 129 plate appearances and had a .922 fielding percentage with just eight errors at the hot corner.
Gettysburg senior catcher Adrienne Rahs (Saucon Valley) was named Centennial Conference player of the week. She hit .500 (6-for-12) with six runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, and seven RBIs.
In baseball, Penn State Berks has won the North Eastern Athletic Conference West Division title with major contrbutnios from junior Matt Emrick (Freedom), freshman Christian Marcin (Palmerton) and senior Kevin Heilman (Easton).
Emrick was named the NEAC's pitcher of the year and a first-team all-star, while second baseman Heilman was a second-team selection.
Emrick has won all three of his conference starts, allowing only two earned runs in 21.0 innings. He tossed complete-game shutouts in two of those starts. Emrick recorded seven strikeouts in those three starts and held the opposition to a .139 batting average.
Heiman is batting .361 with 26 hits, two doubles, one home run, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored. He has been nearly flawless at second base, committing just two errors for a .937 fielding percentage.

Somebody Do Something: Traffic pandemonium near Nazareth Area Middle School
http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/nazareth/index.ssf/2012/04/somebody_do_something_traffic.html
FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES
It happens like clockwork at the beginning of the school day and at the end, a reader says.
Traffic bogs down near the Nazareth Area Middle School campus at the intersection of Route 191, Schoeneck Avenue and Friedenstahl Road in Upper Nazareth Township.
"The township, school district and PennDOT have been disagreeing about this spot for a few years now," says skinnymama12. "There is money in escrow somewhere for this, but the township seems to be holding this up."
This intersection is this week's focus of Somebody Do Something.
"There have been multiple fender benders and more serious accidents there," says skinnymama12. "It is treacherous in the morning and afternoon at school drop-off and pick-up times."
Are you familiar with this intersection? Do you think it's in need of a traffic light? Tell us what you think by posting a comment below.
Somebody Do Something is a regular feature of lehighvalleylive.com. The goal is to spotlight a problem, generate discussion and, hopefully, grab the attention of those with the power to fix it.

TV NEWS ON APRIL 30
http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/04/yes-dear-joins-nick-at-nite-schedule-on.html
Nick at Nite has acquired the rights to air the Mike O'Malley sitcom Yes, Dear. The 2000-06 sitcom will start airing tomorrow, Tuesday, May 1, 2012! Yes, a short notice as I don't think it was being planned this early in 2012. Why do I say that because TBS will still air the sitcom weekdays 12-1pm and in a Saturday morning block anytime between 8:30am-12pm. However, TBS will be removing the series from its schedule beginning in July, but we will save that news for another day. Today it is all about Nick at Nite adding the series! Nick at Nite's line-up of modern comedies expands on Tuesday, May 1 to include the complete library of the beloved series Yes, Dear. This 122-episode family comedy stars Mike O'Malley (Glee, GUTS) and follows two couples and their wildly divergent parenting styles. Yes, Dear will air regularly on the network Monday-Friday at 11:00 & 11:30 p.m. ET/PT. The series will also encore at approx. 2:30am & 3:00am.
What about the rest of the line-up? That '70s Show will move from 10-11pm to 8-9pm to start the line-up off replacing My Wife & Kids. From 9-10pm, George Lopez will remain in the time period. From 10-11pm with '70s moving to 8-9pm, Friends will slide into the hour. Then as we mentioned, Yes, Dear will air in the 11pm hour, as Friends will not air in a two-hour block anymore. Not to worry though as Friends will still have a second hour from 12-1am, it is just that it won't be in a two-hour block. The late night schedule will have an encore of George Lopez from 1-2am, replacing the '70s Show encore. At 2am, the half-hour Everybody Hates Chris will remain. At 2:30am and 3:00am, as we mentioned Yes, Dear will encore replacing George Lopez, which of course is moving up to 1-2am. My Wife & Kids is also losing its late night hour, as The Nanny gets two more airings at 3:30am and 4am. The Nanny will also remain at 4:30am leading now into Family Matters from 5-7am (but that's just three airings due to the off-the-clock timings for the network after 11pm).
Nick at Nite has not announced its weekend plans yet, so this is just for Mon-Fri, as we won't know if My Wife & Kids is off the line-up completely until we know the weekend schedule. We will let you know if anything should change on weekends starting May 5. So stay tuned! For now view the Nick at Nite May 2012 weekday schedule.
NBC has pulled low rated single-camera comedy Best Friends Forever after just four episodes. There were just two episodes left to air, but NBC has decided it will air all-new episodes of the hidden camera series Betty White's Off Their Rockers for the full hour now. BFF was coming off a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49, which is very poor. Off Their Rockers does about double that rating and that is by no means a big hit even. In other NBC scheduling news, this season's last two original episodes of Community are being moved up a week to air on Thursday, May 17 at 9:00 & 9:30pm ET/PT. As a result, Awake, which was scheduled for a two-hour block, goes back to an hour at 10pm ET/PT on May 17 and the Awake finale is now the following week on May 24 at 10pm ET/PT. I'm 99.99% sure, Awake will never be seen on NBC after that airing due to low ratings, as that is also coming off a 0.8 18-49 rating this past Thursday. Community was originally set to have a one-hour season finale on May 24 from 8-9pm, but now instead it will be on May 17 at a special hour of 9-10pm. In addition, that night it will also air in its regular 8:00pm half-hour, too, so yes three all-new episodes that night! The Office and Parks & Recreation, which normally air in the 9pm hour, will have their finales early this season, airing May 10. Which NBC sitcoms will be back next season? I would bring back Community for one last season, cancel 30 Rock, renew The Office for possibly one last season, and bring back Parks & Recreation. And the only other NBC comedy left is Up All Night and I would cancel that. We shall know very soon as we are officially just two weeks away from the upfront season! Stay with us for continued updates!

TV NEWS ON APRIL 29
http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/04/week-32-tv-ratings-and-analysis-how.html
2011-12 Week 32 TV Ratings (first four nights final ratings, Mon-Thu):
Households:N/A
Total Viewers: N/A.
Adults 18-49: N/A
Week 32 (April 23-29) Analysis: Week 32 has some repeats but since Thursday everything is now new as we have entered May sweeps! We don't have the the first four night averages, but we can project ABC, CBS and Fox are very close to each other again in HH/viewers, with Fox on top, followed by ABC then CBS, as CBS was in repeats thru Wednesday. In the more important adults 18-49, it is more clear. Fox is by far first, followed by ABC. CBS and NBC are battling for third. NBC is a distant fourth in HH/viewers. When the week is over by tonight, it could be a bit different since 100% new programming was Thu-Sun. More on the prediction of week 32 below. As for last week, week 31, Fox took the 18-49 crown, while CBS took home HH/total viewers. ABC was second in 18-49 and also HH/viewers. CBS was third in 18-49, while Fox was third in HH/viewers. And that left NBC fourth across the board.
On Monday, it was NBC with the edge over ABC in adults 18-49. First, on ABC, Dancing with the Stars started it off from 8-10pm doing a first place 17.62 million and a 3.2 rating, up three tenths from previous week as it will now climb I think until the end of the season. At 10pm, Castle was preempted for a special edition of 20/20 on the behind scenes of Dancing with the Stars and did 10.68 million and a 2.1 18-49 rating. Not bad. For CBS, a repeat of How I Met Your Mother did 4.69 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, which seems below average for its repeat ratings. A repeat of 2 Broke Girls followed with 5.13 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, not as good as it could be. A repeat of Two and a Half Men followed at 9 with 6.67 million and a 2.0 rating, the best of the block but it also is below normal for a repeat. A repeat of Mike & Molly was next and did 6.0 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating. At 10, a repeat episode of Hawaii Five-0 did 7.7 million and a 1.6 18-49 rating, on par with previous week but much more total viewers. Fox started off the night with Bones doing 7.38 million and a 2.2 rating, on par with the previous week. House was new at 9 with 6.49 million and a 2.3 rating, up three tenths from previous week. NBC started it off with a two-hour The Voice and did a second place 10.31 million and a 3.8 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth from previous week's season low. It has certainly fallen a lot since February. Still good, but NBC should have placed it on another night for mass ratings instead of going against another reality juggernaut. Then at 10pm week twelve of critical darling Smash was next doing 6.01 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating, which was up a tenth from previous week's series low. It's coming back for a second season anyway, but the show is pricy, so it needs to do better. The CW aired an all-new Gossip Girl and did just 990,000 viewers and 0.5 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week. A new Hart of Dixie followed with 1.28 million and a 0.5 rating, also down a tenth from previous week.
On Tuesday, it was close for first place with Fox edging NBC and ABC. First on CBS, NCIS at 8 started it off with a repeat doing 12.41 million and a 2.0 18-49 rating. Nice total viewers, but low 18-49 considering the total viewers. Then a repeat of NCIS: Los Angeles at 9pm did 9.66 million and a 1.7 18-49 rating, down three tenths from previous week, when its lead-in was new. At 10pm, a repeat of Unforgettable did 7.79 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. ABC aired a repeat of Last Man Standing doing 5.69 million and a 1.3 18-49 rating, as they re-aired the episode with Kim Kardashian. Final two episodes of the season starts this Tuesday! A new Cougar Town did 4.89 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, up a tenth week-to-week, which could be better but at least it went up when its lead-in was a repeat. At 9pm, the live Dancing with the Stars: The Results did 14.54 million and a 2.4 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week, as we said goodbye to the music legend Gladys Knight. Next at 10pm, was second week of Private Practice on its new night doing 8.13 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, up a nice half a point from previous week's return. That's more like it, and this show should be in this range for the rest of the season. Fox aired a new Glee doing 6.9 million and a 2.7 18-49 rating, up three tenths from previous week's low. New Girl was new at 9 too and did 5.2 million and a 2.6 18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous week despite its lead-in going up. At 9:30pm a repeat followed and did just 3.11 million and a 1.4 18-49 rating. NBC was next with The Biggest Loser cut to the 8pm hour only doing 6.87 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating, which was down a tenth from previous week. At 9, NBC aired the live The Voice results show doing 8.93 million and a 3.4 18-49 rating, up a tenth from previous week. At 10pm, NBC's new reality series Fashion Star did just 4.59 million and a 1.5 18-49 rating, on par with previous week. This show is not cutting it after a big lead-in. The CW was all-new with 90210 doing 1.11 million and a 0.6 18-49 rating. Then at 9pm, the series premiere of LA Complex did just 630,000 viewers and a 0.3 18-49 rating, for the lowest drama premiere in the history of broadcast TV. Ouch.
Hazleton's Nate Eachus signs free-agent contract with the Chiefs
http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Hazleton's Nate Eachus, well known to area football fans because of his high school career and his time at Colgate University, has signed a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs and will report to the Chiefs later this week.
This is all from Nate's family.
There was some hope that Eachus would get drafted, but he will still have an opportunity to earn his way on to a NFL roster.
As someone who covered Eachus at both Hazleton and Colgate, I wish him well.

Neefe denied in bid for 700th by Wilson; Northern Lehigh, Salisbury and Pen Argyl also win
http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Surprising Wilson held off Southern Lehigh 3-2 on Saturday night to ruin Spartans coach Brian Neefe's bid for his 700th career victory.
That game was the final of four Colonial League "Play Day" softball games on Saturday at Pates Park.
Earlier in the day, Northern Lehigh beat Bangor 1-0 on a one-hitter by Kaelah Horwath and a RBI single by Cassie Toth.
Salisbury routed Palisades 15-0 in three innings. Kaitlyn Stokes had the only Pirates hit in the game, while Meghan Williams went 3-for-3 and knocked in two runs for the Falcons.
In a battle of probable playoff teams, Pen Argyl edged Northwestern 4-3 as Kassy Beckage knocked in three runs and winning pitcher Emily Smull held off a Northwestern rally. The Green Knights survived four errors.
Looking more and more likely that your four Colonial League playoff teams will be Pen Argyl, Northwestern, Palmerton and Saucon Valley.
The Panthers lost today, by the way, dropping a nonleague game to Lehighton by a 9-7 score.
Neefe, in his 42nd season, will get another crack at No.700 on Monday when his team plays Notre Dame at Center Valley.

Top 10

Dropped: Kutztown (12-3), Pleasant Valley (10-4).
Others to consider: Palmerton (12-3), Northwestern (11-4), Nazareth (9-5).
HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
MEGHAN WILLIAMS, SALISBURY
Meghan Williams, Salisbury
With a win over Palisades on Saturday, Salisbury would have as many victories this season (six) as it has had in the previous three seasons combined.
The Falcons are definitely a program on the rise with several promising young players and perhaps no one offers more hope for the future than freshman outfielder Meghan Williams. Meghan Williams
Williams is the team’s leading hitter and offers a strong arm defensively.
She was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI in Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Northern Lehigh and also had two of the team’s five hits in a loss to Palmerton earlier in the week.
Among her best games earlier was a 4-for-5 against Palisades that included a double and triple, and she also went 3-for-4 against Southern Lehigh.
“She’s had some real good games for us,” said Salisbury coach Brian Covely. “She’s a real good hitter for us in the cleanup spot and hits a lot of line drives. She has struck out once all season, so she puts the ball in play. She’s also a very good, coachable kid, and she’s only going to get better.”
Jackie Wear, Delaware Valley
The numbers show Delaware Valley College may not be having the best of seasons, but Aggies shortstop Jackie Wear is putting up some of the best numbers of her career.
The sophomore from Northwestern Lehigh was batting .485 through Wednesday with team-highs of 31 runs, 49 hits, 19 steals and 16 doubles. Her doubles total is already a new school record. She also had five home runs and 23 RBIs.
“Things have really come together for me,” Wear said. “Last year as a freshman I would get really nervous. Now, I am staying more relaxed and confident. I worked hard in the summer and over winter break on my swing, but it's really the mental aspect that's important. Things would get in my head a lot of times. I just had to stop getting nervous. Now I'm having fun.” Jackie Wear
Wear played three different positions in four seasons at Northwestern. She said catcher remains her favorite position, but has grown to like playing shortstop for the Aggies (14-15, 4-8 Freedom Conference).
Wear will be back at Pates Park this summer, playing for the Patriettes Under-23 team.
TV NEWS ON APRIL 28
http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/04/digital-digest-covert-affairs-season.html
Welcome to Digital Digest! We have another one of those slow Saturdays for you, but fear not, we're here as always with all of your news, a preview of Tuesday's releases, and more! And this week, we have a review of Tuesday's release of Cover Affairs - Season Two! Let's get going!
DIGITAL NEWS
Warner Archive, which has been bringing us all of the Hanna-Barbera classics which have ever existed over the past year or so, has another very rare release (like many of them) went on sale this week without much prior notice. The classic 1973 series Inch High Private Eye is now available to purchase from the website.
There haven't been any Saturday Night Live season releases lately (and it seems unlikely that there ever will be any further ones, as the intention was only to release the first five seasons anyway), but that doesn't mean that the series is done on DVD. Special "best of" releases have always been a mainstay for the series, and the next one to come is Saturday Night Live - The Women of SNL. The single disc release comes from Universal (this has to be confusing, since some releases of the series come from Lionsgate and others from Universal, though it has been mostly Universal lately) on June 3, and looks back at the women who have created some of the most memorable characters of the series. You can read more about the release here.
Earlier this week, Mill Creek announced a deal in which they will be licensing 250 movies (no television series, but movies) for release on DVD and Blu-ray from Sony. While we can't stress enough that this deal only includes movies, and NO television series, this is indeed great news to hear from the studio, as it indicates that the studio is serious about acquisitions from major studios (the same studios which hold all of our favorite series) and is developing relationships with those studios. So while this isn't exactly news that our readers can use right now, we certainly hope that this is a springboard for good news for television fans in the near future, and will certainly keep you updated about any future progress which is made.
Finally, speaking of TV movies, Sony Pictures OnDemand's Choice Collection will be releasing two TV movies featuring classic sitcom stars releasing this Tuesday (May 1). The first one is the 1986 movie titled Kate's Secret. Meredith Baxter (Family Ties and Bridget Loves Bernie) plays the wife who seems to have everything in this made-for-TV-movie, which illuminates the problem of bulimia. In fitness-obsessed Southern California, Kate Stark struggles to hide her eating disorder, characterized by a psychological need to binge eat and purge, from her husband (Ben Masters), best friend (Shari Belafonte), and everyone around her who could help her fight this life-threatening illness. When finally confronted by the seriousness of her situation, Kate encounters the caring Dr. Resnick (Ed Asner), and patients with similar issues (played by Tracy Nelson and Mackenzie Phillips), who help her to acknowledge and accept her problem… the first step to healing. Also being released on May is More Than Friends from 1978. Childhood friends in the Bronx during the 1950s and '60s, Alan Corkus (Rob Reiner, All in the Family) and Maddy Pearlman (Penny Marshall, Laverne & Shirley) grew into awkward teenagers who attended their Senior Prom together. Despite their crossing paths again at City College, where a mutual initiation to sex helps their friendship grow into love, they never seem able to express their true feelings for each other. Years later, both have gone their separate ways, each finding frustration in love and career. When Maddy's love affair with a fellow actor ends disastrously, she surprises Alan with a visit, and the two decide to move in together. But the road to bliss is bumpy, and Maddy decides to move on again, leaving Alan unhappily trying to have relationships with other women, only to have Maddy return again... This charming comedy about their on-and-off relationship, and the bittersweet nature of love between friends -- directed by sitcom director Jim Burrows and from a screenplay by Reiner and Phil Mishkin -- is a realistic take on the perils and pitfalls of modern romance. See links to pre-order both below!
Former Phillie Tommy Greene on "Calling All Sports" this morning; appearing in Kutztown this afternoon
http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Big week for ex-Phillies in town.
Larry Bowa, who I found to be quite entertaining during a press conference at Coca-Cola Park, was here on Thursday night and now Tommy Greene will be in the area on Saturday.
He will appear with local sports author Billy Staples on the "Calling All Sports" radio show this morning on AM 1470 and fox1470.com, and then will sign autographs and pose for pictures from 2 to 4 this afternoon at Groov's Billiards and Games at 314 W. Main Street in Kutztown.
Greene pitched for the Phillies from 1990-95 and was a member of the 1993 Phillies who won the National League title. He also pitched a no-hitter against the Montreal Expos in 1991.
Greene will be back in the area on Sunday, June 24, appearing with several other former athletes in a celebrity meet 'n greet at the Sands Casino that will be followed on June 25 by a golf tournament to benefit the B.E.S.T. Scholarship proram.
Greene will appear on the radio show at approximately 10:15 this morning. Call 610-432-5767 if you have questions.
In the first hour of the show between 9-10, Nick Fierro will break down the Eagles draft so far and Steve Gross will analyze the quarterfinal round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

TV NEWS ON APRIL 27
http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/04/guest-stars-galore-on-tbs-men-at-work.html
Men at Work, the new TBS original comedy series from Sony Pictures Television, has begun production in Los Angeles. Created by Breckin Meyer, the sitcom stars Danny Masterson (That '70s Show), Michael Cassidy (The O.C.), Adam Busch (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), James Lesure (Las Vegas) and Meredith Hagner (Royal Pains). In addition to starting production, Men at Work has signed up its first guest stars: Stacy Keibler, J.K. Simmons and Kathy Najimy. Men at Work centers on four buddies who work together at a magazine. Masterson plays the recently dumped Milo, whose friends are determined to help him get back in the dating game. Lesure is Gibbs, a photographer and successful ladies man. Cassidy plays Tyler, a features writer who brings a dose of style and sophistication to the group. And Busch is Neal, a somewhat nebbish reporter and the only one in the group with a steady girlfriend (Hagner). Together, the four friends help each other navigate the treacherous waters of work, friendship and women.
As for the guest stars, Stacy Keibler will play Keri, a gorgeous girl who hooks up with Milo and Gibbs at a bar and offers them an interesting proposition. J.K. Simmons will play P.J. Jordan, the stern and demanding publisher of the magazine where the guys work. He also happens to be the father of Neal's girlfriend, Amy. And Kathy Najimy will play Sasha Ryan, a well-known sex blogger being interviewed by Tyler and photographed by Gibbs... and attracting the attention of both.
Men at Work is slated to air on TBS Thursdays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), beginning with back-to-back episodes on May 24. The series will then air every Thursday in the 10 p.m. half-hour. Ten episodes have been ordered and will run through July 12, before being taken over by another original sitcom: Sullivan & Son. The season finale of Men will be back-to-back episodes as well on July 12.

Coy Stampone recommended to become next Northampton boys basketball coach
http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/
FROM KEITH GROLLER
Several reliable sources have told me that Coy Stampone will be presented to the Northampton Area School District Board for approval as the high school's next varsity boys basketball coach.
The next board meeting is slated for May 7.
Stampone, 52, is a business education teacher at Northampton High School.
In his first year as a head coach in 2011-12, Stampone guided Pen Argyl to a 6-16 record, 5-11 in the Colonial League.
Stampone played for Bill Pensyl at Bangor and was a member of the Slaters 1977 Colonial League championship team. He also played at Kutztown University.
He had been an assistant at Nazareth from 2006-2011, where his son, Anthony played football and basketball. Anthony is completing his sophomore year at Marist where he plays football. Another son, Mike, played football at King's.
Mark Lesko, a 2002 Muhlenberg College graduate who had coached at Central Catholic two years ago and had been on Ed Ohlson's staff at Northampton last year, was Ohlson's recommended choice for the position. He was reportedly a finalist along with former Whitehall High standout Jerry Lloyd.
Ohlson resigned shortly after the end of the 2011-12 season. He was 89-106 over eight seasons, 8-14 last year.
