Belvidere High School students accused of fraudulently soliciting donations for scoreboard

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

New Jersey State Police today confirmed three Belvidere High School students were arrested last month on accusations they fraudulently solicited donations for a commemorative scoreboard at the newly named Domenick Colangelo Stadium.

"In reality that scoreboard had been paid for by private corporations," state police spokesman Lt. Stephen Jones said.

Craig Schubert, 18, of Belvidere, and two 17-year-old boys collected almost $100 from 17 residents of Brookfield Estates, a senior-citizen community in White Township, according to Jones. He said the money was solicited between Oct. 8 and 11, but he was unsure when police arrested the three.

Schubert, a running back for the County Seaters football team, is charged with 17 counts of theft. The juveniles were released to their parents, Jones said.

"I'm not sure what they're going to face at this point," Jones said.

Police did not identify the other two teens because they are minors.

Belvidere schools Superintendent Dirk Swaneveld plans to address the alleged thefts during tonight's meeting of the Belvidere School Board. It starts at 7:30 in the board conference room at Belvidere High School, 809 Oxford St.

The school district dedicated the stadium to Colangelo at the Seaters' Nov. 4 game. Colangelo taught algebra and calculus at Belvidere High School and coached 17 football teams through 1971, before returning for 18 more seasons to work with freshman teams.

New Jersey State Police Detective Eric Clowes, assigned to the Washington station, investigated the case and found the 17 victims, according to Jones. No one else has stepped forward claiming to have been contacted by the trio, the lieutenant said.

"Hopefully, they're the only victims that were affected by this," Jones said.
