Joint venture announced for area legion baseball

FROM KEITH GROLLER

Barry Detweiler, a diehard Central Catholic fan and the guy who ran the now-defunct East Side Rams organization back in the 1970s when I was a kid and a proud (but not very good) baseball player, has sent out this release talking about a joint venture between area legion baseball leagues:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball League and the Schuylkill-Berks American Legion
Baseball League announced they have joined in a two year agreement to hold a joint
Showcase and All Star game. The objective is to provide the players from both leagues to
showcase their talents before prospective college and professional scouts.
The agreement is for two years. This year's events will be held in the Schuylkill-Berks area
and the events will shift to the Lehigh Valley in 2012 at a site yet to be selected.
,
While the final details for this year's events are still being worked out, so far the plans are as
follows;
The Showcase will be held on Saturday, June 25 10:00 A.M. All teams in the two leagues
will be sending players who have not committed to any school to a skills tryout at Kutztown
University. Invitations to coaches will be sent to all universities and colleges in the Eastern
Pennsylvania area, but any coach is welcome to come. Professional scouts will also be
invited.
The All Star game will be held at 1st Energy Stadium in Reading on Monday, June 27,7:00
P.M. The game will be nine innings with wood bats being used. While each league will '
develop its own criteria for selecting players, each player selected will be given an
opportunity to play. Admission will be charged and any profits will be donated to a charity or
charities selected by the leagues.
For more details contact Barry Werley at 610-395-6738 or Ed Lloyd at 610-929-3842.
The Schuylkill-Berks League consists of 16 teams covering Schuylkill and the northern part
of Berks Counties. The Lehigh Valley League consists of 11 teams covering Lehigh and
portions of Carbon Counties. Over 400 boys participate in the two leagues.
