Eight-run eighth inning carries Liberty High School baseball team to 10-3 victory over Northampton

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Jim McCarthy's two-run double capped an eight-run eighth inning rally and Jim Sawyer pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Liberty High School's baseball team to a 10-3 Lehigh Valley Conference victory over host Northampton.

The win gives Liberty (11-5 overall, 7-5 LVC East) a one game lead over Easton in the East Division. Liberty and Easton play in a key game Tuesday in Palmer Township.

The loss dropped Northampton (11-7, 8-4) 1.5 games behind Parkland in the league's wild card race.

McCarthy began the winning rally with a one-out walk and eventually scored the go-ahead run when Pete Daland reached on a fielder's choice grounder. Ryan Brong and Andreas Haller had RBI hits in front of McCarthy's two-run double.

"Hitting is contagious," Liberty coach Andy Pitsilos said. "If we start hitting like that we'll be a very tough out."

Phil Schmidt pitched seven strong innings and drove in two runs for Northampton.
