FROM KEITH GROLLER
At Lehigh's weekly luncheon on Tuesday there was no firm answer yet about whether Saturday's Lehigh-Delaware FCS playoff would be televised.
But I just received word from producers at Service Electric that the game will be seen on WFMZ-TV, Channel 69 with Service Electric's production crew handling the broadcast, which will begin at noon.
No word yet who will be calling the action, but my guess is Steve Degler and Mike Yadush will have microphones.
This is great news for Lehigh fans, eager to see the renewal of the longstanding rivalry with Delaware.
Last week's Lehigh-Northern Iowa game was not televised and seen only through streaming video on ncaa.com.
High costs (I heard a figure of $35,000) were cited as the reason the game wasn't televised.
But it was hoped that the proximity to Delaware would allow this week's game to be televised, either on Service Electric TV2 or WFMZ-Channel 69.
TV2 does Lehigh's home games, and Channel 69 does select Lehigh road games, including games at Drake, Holy Cross and Lafayette this season.
TV2 will be doing the Easton-La Salle PIAA Class 4A game in northeast Philly on Saturday.
The game can be heard on radio at 1320, 1230 AM (the local ESPN affiliate).
Fans may be looking for other options than attending, because I was told today that game tickets cost $30 and parking $20 for this game.
More FCS action is available on CW 57 on Saturday. The CW Philly (WPSG-TV) will broadcast ESPN's coverage of the NCAA football championship playoff game between Villanova University and Stephen F. Austin State University live from Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches, Texas. at 3:30 p.m. EST.

MATCH UP: The Leopards play games two and three of their five-game homestand early in the week, hosting Princeton (3-3) on Tuesday and Susquehanna (1-4) on Wednesday.
BACK-TO-BACK: Lafayette is playing back-to-back games for the first time since the 2000-01 season when Lafayette played Yale and La Salle on consecutive days of the University of California Golden Bear Classic in Berkeley, Calif.
LAST TIME OUT: Jared Mintz led Lafayette with 22 points and a career-high six assists in a 67-64 loss to Delaware on Saturday. Mintz drilled a pair of free throws to tie the game 59-59 with 1:30 left. Jim Mower contributed 11 points while sophomore Tony Johnson brought down a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with nine points before fouling out in the final seconds. REBOUNDING FROM AN UNEXPECED PLACE: Sophomore guard Tony Johnson had a career-high 10 rebounds on Saturday against Delaware. Johnson is leading the team with 5.3 rpg.
REBOUNDING IS A TEAM EFFORT: Against Delaware, eight Lafayette players had a rebound and six players had two or more. For the season, Tony Johnson (5.3 rpg), Jared Mintz (4.3 rpg) and Ryan Willen (4.3 rpg) lead the team on the glass. On average, however, the Leopards are being out-rebounded by nearly seven boards per game.
BACK HOME: Lafayette's five-game homestand is the longest since 2007-08. It is just the second time during Fran O'Hanlon's 16 seasons that Lafayette has played five straight at home and the fifth time playing four or more. The Leopards were 13-3 at home in 2009-10, including two wins in the Patriot League Tournament to advance to the conference championship game.
BENBOW's BACK: Senior small forward Darion Benbow was certainly in the coaching staff's game plan entering the season, but a broken thumb suffered during preseason practice forced him to miss the first four games of the season. Benbow made his season debut at Penn and Fran O'Hanlon wasn't hesitant to use him, especially after his defensive contributions early on. Benbow finished the game having played 15 minutes with two points, two rebounds and a block. Against Delaware, Benbow took the start instead of guard Jim Mower and played 20 minutes with three rebounds, a block and an assist.
NEXT UP: After playing back-to-back games with Princeton and Susquehanna, Lafayette hosts Sacred Heart on Monday.
Meet the Captains: Jared Mintz, a preseason All-Patriot League selection, and Ben Wheeler are holding the leadership reins for the 2010-11 season. Mintz is the team's leading scorer (16.3 ppg) and second in rebounding (4.3 rpg). Wheeler averages 5.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg and has 19 assists this season.
NATIONAL LEADER: According to the latest NCAA report of Division I institutions, Lafayette College ranks third in the nation in student-athlete graduation success rate (GSR). The Leopards post an impressive 97 percent GSR, ranking well above the national GSR for Division I student-athletes of 79 percent.
CONTRIBUTING IN OTHER WAYS: As the team's point guard, sophomore Tony Johnson's first inclination is to pass. That said, he leads the team with 23 assists (3.8 per game) eight steals (1.3 spg) and 32 rebounds (5.3 rpg). In terms of scoring, he is contributing 5.7 ppg.
VS. THE IVY LEAGUE: The Leopards take on their second Ivy League opponent of the season. Lafayette is 85-124 all-time vs. the Ancient Eight.
Brown 11-8 Harvard 2-3 Columbia 28-12 Penn 5-39 Cornell 11-7 Princeton 18-44 Dartmouth 3-2 Yale 7-9
AT THE LINE: The Leopards are shooting 81 percent from the free throw line for the 2010-11 season. Lafayette has converted 84-of-104 from the stripe led by a 34-of-40 (85%) seasonal clip from Jared Mintz and a 23-of-26 (89%) effort from Ryan Willen. Last season, Lafayette shot 76 percent from the foul line and was ranked eighth in the nation.
ON THE SIDELINE: The all-time winningest coach in Lafayette history and longest-tenured coach in the Patriot League, Fran O'Hanlon (Villanova, '70) is in his 16th season as the Leopards' head coach. A three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, O'Hanlon has twice led Lafayette's program to the NCAA Tournament and lays claim to three Patriot League regular-season titles. With a 75-71 double-overtime victory over Lehigh on Feb. 18, 2007, O'Hanlon became the winningest coach in Lafayette history and now holds an all-time record of 214-228 on College Hill. O'Hanlon's overall record does not necessarily tell an accurate story of the job he has done at Lafayette. The Philadelphia native inherited a 2-25 team when he took over in 1995-96 and won seven, 11, 19, 22 and 24 games over the next five seasons. From 1997-2000, Lafayette was 65-24 overall and 31-5 in the conference with two NCAA Tournament appearances. In 1996, the Patriot League, which was originally founded based on the principle of need-based financial aid only, began allowing athletic scholarships. However, it was not until 2006 that Lafayette chose to do so. By no coincidence, during that span, Lafayette posted a 79-91 mark and was 38-44 in the league.
NATIONALLY RANKED FOES: It's not a weekly occurrence that Lafayette faces nationally-ranked opponents which it did vs. No. 6/7 Villanova on Nov. 20 and will again on Dec. 29 at Gonzaga. The last time Lafayette beat a nationally ranked opponent was Dec. 2, 1978, a 77-70 victory over Rutgers. The last conference game that pitted Lafayette against a ranked opponent was Feb. 15, 2006, a 69-49 loss to Bucknell.
AT THE LINE: The Leopards are shooting 81 percent from the free throw line for the 2010-11 season. Lafayette has converted 84-of-104 from the stripe led by an 23-for-26 (89%) seasonal clip from Ryan Willen and a 34-for-40 (85%) effort from Jared Mintz. Last season, Lafayette shot 76 percent from the foul line and was ranked eighth in the nation.
LEAGUE HISTORY: Jared Mintz was the first player in conference history to lead the Patriot League in free throw and field goal percentage in the same season. Mintz shot a Patriot League-best 54.2 percent from the floor and 87.3 percent (131-150) from the line.
30+ CLUB: Junior Jim Mower scored 31 points against Rider, going 8-for-11 from three-point range. Andrew Brown '09 was the last Leopard to reach 30 points when he scored 31 points against Robert Morris on Dec. 17, 2008.
THE PRESEASON POLL: Lafayette was selected third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Leopards, who received two first-place votes and 73 points overall, were selected behind American (seven first-place votes, 79 points) and Bucknell (three first-place votes, 76 points) but ahead of Holy Cross (two first-place votes, 70 points), Lehigh (two first-place votes, 69 points), Navy (35 points), Colgate (31 points) and Army (15 points). The poll is voted on by the conference head coaches and sports information directors.
IN THE RANKS: Nine of Lafayette's non-conference opponents were picked to finish within the top five of their respective leagues in the preseason polls. Three teams were selected to finish atop of their conferences, NJIT, Princeton and Gonzaga. Lafayette will tip off against five opponents from the Northeast Conference -- the most of any one conference on the schedule.
2009-10 NCAA INDIVUDAL RANKINGS: In 2009-10, Jim Mower ranked third nationally for three-point field goal percentage (47.5%) and 32nd in three-point field goals per game (2.9). Jared Mintz was 23rd in the country in free throw percentage (87.3%). As a team, Lafayette finished fifth in free-throw percentage (76.4). The 2010-11 NCAA rankings will not be available until December.
THE NEW GUY: Head coach Fran O'Hanlon added a new face to his coaching staff this season. Donovan Williams is in the midst of his first season at Lafayette under O'Hanlon. Williams came to College Hill from Holy Family University in Philadelphia where he was an assistant coach under first-year Holy Family head coach and former Lafayette assistant coach John O'Connor. The Williams name is well-known in coaching, as Williams' father, George, was a high school coach for more than 30 years in Georgia and Alabama. Williams' brother, Pershin, was an assistant at Lafayette under O'Hanlon in 2008-09, before taking an assistant coaching job at Georgia Southern University prior to the 2009-10 season.
NEW PLAYERS: Head coach Fran O'Hanlon brought in three new players to the Lafayette roster this season. The first, Jake Kreuser, comes from Mendota Heights, Minn. The 7-0, 225-pound center adds size and depth to the frontcourt, provides solid defensive presence and will supplement Leopards' rebounding efforts. Les Smith hails from Cotati, Calif. The 6-0 guard is versatile combo guard who can play multiple positions. He is a natural scorer but can play the point guard position if called upon. Smith defends well and has proven to be very good at penetrating to the basket. The final freshman, Jack Detmer comes from Scarsdale, N.Y. Detmer is a tough player who has an excellent feel for the game. He shows a knack for making hustle plays while being a solid team defender. His brother, Ted '08, was a four-year letterwinner for the Leopards.
LAFAYETTE ON TELEVISION: Lafayette will lead the Patriot League with at least 13 of its regular-season games televised during the 2010-11 season. The Leopards will also lead the Patriot League with at least nine nationally-televised games, as MASN (available through both DIRECTV and DISH Network) will air Lafayette's entire slate of home league contests on a tape-delay basis for the third straight season. Emmy-nominated local sports broadcaster Gary Laubach will handle all of Lafayette's play-by-play duties for the 14th straight season. Former Lafayette men's basketball coach John Leone will provide color analysis for the 12th season.
BASKETBALL IQ: Lafayette placed six student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll during the 2009-10 season. The distinction recognizes those individuals who have earned a varsity letter and maintained a 3.2 GPA during the spring semester. Michael Gruner '10, senior Deirunas Visockas, juniors Rob Delaney, Jim Mower, Ryan Willen and Alex Orchowski (transferred to Tufts) were honored.
TOPS IN THE NATION: The Leopards made all 19 of their free throws against Colgate (2/10/10), the best mark in the nation in 2009-10. It topped Kentucky's mark of 18-of-18 on Dec. 19, 2009.
PATRIOT HONORS: In 2009-10, Lafayette head coach Fran O'Hanlon was named Patriot League Men's Basketball Coach of the Year and two of his student-athletes earned All-Patriot League recognition with forward Jared Mintz earning first-team honors and forward Ryan Willen collecting second-team laurels. O'Hanlon received his third Patriot League Coach of the Year award, and first since claiming back-to-back honors in 1997-98 and 1998-99, the first Patriot League coach to win the award consecutively. Mintz was likely the most-improved player in the conference and was the first Lafayette player to earn first-team honors since Winston Davis and Justin DeBerry in 2003-04. Willen was an All-Rookie pick in 2008-09 before securing second-team honors. He averaged 12.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game overall and 13.9 ppg and 4.9 rpg in conference action.
ABOUT LAFAYETTE COLLEGE: Located in Easton, Pa. (70 miles west of New York City and 60 miles north of Philadelphia) on the banks of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers, Lafayette is a small liberal arts school with a renowned engineering program. Lafayette, which has 23 Division I sports with a student body of 2,403 undergraduates, competes in the Patriot League with Army, Navy, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Colgate, American and Lehigh. Lafayette is the alma mater of Pete Carril and Tampa Bay Rays' manager Joe Maddon.
FACEBOOK/TWITTER: Fans can follow Lafayette basketball on Facebook at facebook.com/lafayette.leopard and Twitter at twitter.com/goleopards .
ON THE RADIO: All of the 2010-11 Lafayette men's basketball regular season and each of the Leopards' postseason games will air WJRH-FM 104.9. In his 44th season as the radio voice of Lafayette Athletics, Dick Hammer will continue to call the play-by-play action. Joining Hammer courtside will be Lafayette Sports Information Director, Philip LaBella to provide color analysis.

Big Ten coaches honor Persa
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Though his season ended abruptly following a fluke injury, Dan Persa made an impression on the Big Ten. The coaches voted the Northwestern quarterback first-team all-conference, recognizing a season that likely will produce more awards.
Persa, a Liberty High graduate, was named the first-team quarterback over Wisconsin's Scott Tolzien (second team) and Michigan's Denard Robinson (honorable mention). However, the coaches did name Robinson the Big Ten offensive player of the year. Conference media named Persa to the second team behind Robinson.
Offensive guard Stefen Wisniewski was Penn State's only player on the coaches' first team. Wisniewski on Monday also was named a first-team all-American by the American Football Coaches Association.
Persa, a redshirt sophomore, had a prolific season at Northwestern, accounting for 24 of the team's 29 touchdowns in the 10 games he played. The last one, a 20-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, lifted the Wildcats to a 21-17 victory over Iowa.
After the play, Persa sustained a ruptured Achilles, which ended his season. Northwestern lost its final two games to end the regular season 7-5.
Persa finished second in the conference in total offense (310 per game) and passing yards (258.1) and fourth in pass efficiency (159.0 rating). He threw 15 touchdown passes, against four interceptions, and completed 73.5 percent of his passes, second in the league behind Tolzien. Persa is the fifth Northwestern quarterback to earn all-Big Ten honors and first since Brett Basanez in 2005.
Wisniewski led Penn State, earning first-team honors for the second consecutive year. He was the first-team center last year and a second-team guard in 2008.
The coaches voted running back Evan Royster and defensive tackle Ollie Ogbu to the second team. The media voted Wisniewski second team.
The coaches awarded honorable mentions to offensive tackle Quinn Barham, linebacker Chris Colasanti, cornerback D'Anton Lynn and receiver Derek Moye. Additional media honorable mentions went to safety Drew Astorino, defensive tackle Devon Still and kicker Collin Wagner.
Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan was named the defensive player and lineman of the year. Wisconsin running back James White was the freshman of the year, and Michigan State's Mark Dantonio the coach of the year.

Quakertown youth football team to play in Pop Warner Super Bowl
FROM THE MORNING CALL
The unbeaten Quakertown Panthers Junior Pee Wee 105-pound youth football team this week is heading to Orlando, Fla., to play in the Pop Warner Super Bowl.
The team, consisting of 10- and 11-year-old players, will represent the Eastern Region of the nation, Bux-Mont Youth Football and the Quakertown Midget Football Association at the Dec. 4-11 Pop Warner Super Bowl National Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.
It is only the second time in the 54-year history of the Quakertown Midget Football Association that a team from the association has qualified for the Pop Warner Super Bowl. It also occurred in 2003.
Quakertown went undefeated through the regular season and won the Bux-Mont Pop Warner Division 2 title on Oct. 23 and a preliminary round victory on Oct. 30 in the Pop Warner Eastern Regional playoffs. A late rally by a team from Buffalo, N.Y., sent Quakertown to defeat in the next round, however the Buffalo team was later disqualified.
Quakertown then defeated Spring Valley, N.Y., by 20-0, followed by victories on Nov. 20 against Lansdale and then on Nov. 26 against Holmdel, N.J., for the Eastern Regional title. Quakertown won the Nov. 26 game by 24-0 to improve to 15-0 on the season.
The team has a fund-raiser in place to help to defray the cost of the trip to Florida. In addition to bake sales, car washes and other events, the team is seeking donations from the public by Tuesday. For information, call Ron or Kim Lefkoski at 215-529-9085 or 267-261-0580.

Person familiar with negotiations: RHP Vazquez and Marlins reach preliminary $7 million deal
FROM THE MORNING CALL
NEW YORK (AP) — Pitcher Javier Vazquez and the Florida Marlins reached a preliminary agreement on a $7 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The deal is subject to Vazquez passing a physical, the person said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement was made.
The 34-year-old right-hander was 10-10 with a 5.32 ERA this season in his return to the New York Yankees, who acquired him from Atlanta. He was dropped from the rotation during the second half of the season and didn't appear in the playoffs.
He is 152-149 with a 4.26 ERA in 13 major league seasons with Montreal, the Yankees, Arizona, the Chicago White Sox and Atlanta.
Because the Yankees offered salary arbitration, New York will receive draft-pick compensation next June.

Bears hold on to topple Eagles
FROM THE MORNING CALL
CHICAGO — You could see it immediately on Eagles coach Andy Reid's face.
The anger within had bubbled to the surface before the first question could even be asked in the aftermath of a brutally distasteful 31-26 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday.
With clear, genuine and relatively rare disdain, Reid scolded his team for basically not being ready to play and having what looked at times like a cavalier attitude toward basic fundamentals such as tackling, blocking and communicating — the staples of good football at any level.
"Hats off to the Chicago Bears," he said. "They played better than we did and they coached better than we did in all phases. ... We obviously have to do a better job in the red zone [on offense and defense]."
What stuck out most in the series of misplays that cost the Eagles (7-4) a game in which they finished with advantages in almost every statistical category was an interception 2 yards deep in the end zone by Bears safety Chris Harris, who returned it to the Eagles' 37-yard line in the closing minutes of the first half.
The Eagles were trailing by just one point at the time and had a chance to gain the lead and the momentum heading to halftime. Instead, the Bears encountered almost no resistance whatsoever in driving so quickly toward another touchdown that the Eagles nearly had enough time to respond before halftime.
They didn't, though.
Then, to make matters worse, they gave up a 46-yard kickoff return to Devin Hester leading off the second half. That set the stage for a lightning-quick touchdown drive aided by a 15-yard penalty on rookie safety Nate Allen for a horse-collar tackle of Hester. Hester gained 18 yards on that play, an improvised pass by Jay Cutler, perfectly symbolizing the kind of day it was for a defense that one week earlier gave the New York Giants fits for the better part of 60 minutes.
Cutler (14 for 21, 247 yards, four touchdowns) scrambled out of trouble to dump it to Hester, who was inexplicably left alone near the sideline.
Almost all of the Bears big plays — and there were a bunch of them — came on short dumps or runs in which ballcarriers maneuvered their way through a maze of Eagles defenders with the ease of a seven-on-seven drill in shorts and shells.
In the first half, running back Matt Forte rumbled 61 yards to set up the Bears' first touchdown. On their next series, Hester went 39 yards down the left sideline with a pass delivered to him in the flat. That set up another TD.
Their third touchdown was set up similarly, on a short pass to Earl Bennett that went for 30 yards.
"We've just got to tackle better," cornerback Dimitri Patterson said. "That's the bottom line. We can sit there and make excuses about the surface. Everybody knows the Bears' surface is terrible. That's nothing new. It's like playing in a swamp. But it is what it is."
"There's a point where you have to put your foot down and stop it," Reid added. "As coaches and players, it has to be stopped. That starts with me. I've got to have that thing the right way, and I didn't get it done on my end today."
True enough, as Reid's decision-making was highly questionable as well.
With less than five minutes remaining and the Eagles staring at a fourth-and-goal from the 18 while trailing by 15 points, Reid decided to send David Akers out for 36-yard field goal.
"Things weren't going well and I wanted points," Reid explained. "So I went with the points. ... I didn't want to come out of there with no points."
That meant that the Eagles, after scoring a touchdown on their next series to make it 31-26 with just under two minutes remaining and no timeouts left, had to attempt an onside kick.
That didn't work either, as Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox came down with it, enabling his team to run out the clock and hand Eagles quarterback Michael Vick his first loss as a starter in a game he was able to finish.
Vick was 29 of 44 for 333 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but the Bears did hit him quite a bit, dropping him for four sacks along the way.
In five trips to the red zone, the Eagles scored just one touchdown.
"We just beat ourselves," Vick said. "Plays that we can make, we just didn't make them. And I think when we go back and watch the film, we'll see so many opportunities that we had that we didn't capitalize on. And we just have to get better, starting with me."
Particularly frustrating was Vick's inability to exploit the skills of his top playmaking receiver, DeSean Jackson, who was limited to two receptions for 26 yards.
Vick did find tight end Brent Celek for a magnificent 30-yard scoring strike that set the final score, but it was too little, too late for a team that just didn't seem ready for what the Bears were throwing at them.
"We didn't capitalize on anything," Celek said, shaking his head with disgust. "You can't go down there, expecting to get seven and get three or turn the ball over. So going forward, we've got to fix that. That just hurts our team."

KEITH GROLLER'S NFL PICKS AND A EASTON RECAP!
FROM KEITH GROLLER
First of all, I have to express my appreciation to Stacy Shiffert. She's the business/travel manager for Lehigh University and she did an absolutely spectacular job arranging Lehigh's charter flight and all other details for the football team's trip to Northern Iowa.
You talk about things going off without a hitch.
Everything went like clockwork. She must have learned a thing or two about organization and attention to detail from her father, who also happens to the head coach of the Easton football team.
I am just amazed that I could be leaving a dome stadium in Cedar Falls, Iowa at 5 p.m. and be back in my car in the parking lot at the Lehigh Valley International Airport just before 9 p.m.
I know Stacy hated to miss her father''s game against Whitehall. She was getting regular reports. My guess is that she got back in time to join in the celebration.
What a well-deserved celebration it was after that stirring victory in the District 11 4A championship, although I do feel bad for Whitehall. I came to appreciate that team as well and their scrappiness. To lose a heartbreaker like that after losing their quarterback -- tough, tough deal.
But I continue to be amazed by what Easton does every year with this two-in-three and three-in-eight days stuff. What a range of emotion they experienced in about a 57-hour period.
That should be a dandy in Philly next week as the Rovers go for revenge against La Salle.
As for me, the NFL picks got off to a so-so start on Thursday.
The good news is that I got the three winners right. I am now 86-74 outright on the season.
The bad news is that I was 1-2 against the spread; now a ridiculous, unexplainable 70-84-6 against the spread on the season. I was also 2-1 on the under/over, but still a disappointing 75-84-1 on totals on the season.

The NASD School Board voted to remove $500,000 in escrow to improve the intersection of Friedenstahl and East Lawn Road/191
FROM ROSS NUNAMAKER
The NASD School Board voted to remove $500,000 in escrow to improve the intersection of Friedenstahl and East Lawn Road/191 according to an article in the Express Times.
Upper Nazareth Township (UNT) required the NASD to improve the intersection as a condition of locating the new MS on Friendenstahl road. Recently, PADOT’s review of the improvement plan was rejected and that prompted the school to withdraw funds.
The article quotes UNT solicitor Gary Asteak: "If they take back the money, we'll just have to void their building permit after the fact," Asteak said. "It's just ludicrous."
The school coupled with increased traffic from the development in the surrounding area requires improvements to the intersection, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. The NASD is currently in a legal battle with Lower Nazareth Township over solar panels and it looks like this situation could expand to the same.

Red Rovers beat Zephyrs, win District crown
EASTON – Playing 3 games in 8 days is nothing new to the Easton football team. They did it last season, beating rival Phillipsburg (NJ), beating Parkland, then playing in the PIAA State Quarterfinals against LaSalle College High School.
They will be accomplishing the same feat again in 2010. After a Thanksgiving Day lost to Phillipsburg (NJ), Easton will again be playing in the PIAA State Quarters against LaSalle College HS, after beating the Whitehall Zephyrs, 13-10, Saturday night at Cottingham Stadium.
It was a night Easton senior Justin Pacchioli will always remember. His team down 10-6 early in the fourth quarter, when he was racing down the field to catch up to Whitehall wide receiver Tyler Artim. Artim, who received a pass from backup quarterback Nicholas Shafnisky, was racing as well, towards the endzone to put his team further ahead on the scoreboard.
Instead, Pacchioli stripped the ball out of Atrim’s hands, making him fumble the ball on the Easton 28 yard line, recovering the ball was teammate Ian Hayden. Until now, Whitehall had the momentum.
Chris Polony left the game at the 10:44 mark in the 4th quarter, with an undisclosed injury. Polony threw for 42 yards, completing 6 passes before his injury.
Pacchioli drove his team down the field, on a 13 play – 72 yard drive, scoring on a 2 yard run with 4:24 left in the game for the go-ahead score. Easton’s Zach Bambary (92 yards) and Paccioli played a huge part in the drive. Pacchioli’s 33 yard run on a first down, to the Whitehall 6, excited the Easton crowd.
Easton rushed for a total of 211 yards, and held Whitehall’s offense to 65 yards on the ground.
Easton’s defense stopped Whitehall on 2 possessions, Easton’s offense took over with 0:12 left in the game, and ran the clock for the win. Easton’s Zach Bambary
Pacchioli threw for 80 yards, completing 8 of his passes along with an interception. He also ran for 77 yards and a touchdown.
The Red Rovers took the first lead of the game, at the 11:13 of the first quarter, on a 7-play 54 yard drive, on a Pacchioli to fellow senior Jonathan Bisci 7 yard touchdown pass. The point after was blocked.
Whitehall drove back down the field, on a 13 play 72 yard drive, with 5:19 left in the first stanza, resulting in a Joshua Cirocco 25 yard field. Easton continued to lead 6-3, at half time.
On Easton’s first possession of the 2nd half, they drove the field to the Whitehall 25, until Whitehall junior Michael Williams intercepted a Pacchioli pass, and returned it to the Easton 26. It took the Zephyrs 7 plays, and 26 yards on an Eric Fiore 3 yard touchdown run with 0:50 left in the 3rd quarter, to retake the lead – 10-6.
This is also the 2nd time this decade, that Easton has won back to back District 11 titles. Easton won titles in 2003 and 2004, over Parkland and Liberty, respectively.

Rovers rebound after Thanksgiving Day loss
FROM THE MORNING CALL
Although his Thanksgiving meal did not taste as good as it could have Thursday after the 3-0 overtime loss to Phillipsburg, Easton lineman David Caldwell Jr. understood that the humble pie had to be digested before the pumpkin pie could.
A loss to ancient rival Phillipsburg is always hard to take. In most years, the Red Rovers would have about nine months -- or for the seniors, the rest of their lives -- to reset themselves emotionally. This week, they only had about 54 hours until Saturday night's kickoff with Whitehall in the District 11 Class 4A championship game at Cottingham Stadium.
"It was very hard," Caldwell said. "After we lost to P'burg, we were all down on each other, saying we don't want to play any more. But the next day, we came back. Everybody swallowed (the loss), because there was nothing else we could do. We had to swallow it."
Easton led the Zephyrs 6-3 at halftime, but trailed 10-6 after three quarters. Justin Pacchioli made two tremendous plays, one on offense and one on defense, to light the team's fire. He chased down Whitehall receiver Tyler Artim and forced a fumble on a play that could have given the Zephyrs, playing without star quarterback Chris Polony, a commanding lead.
But Zack Bambary recovered, and on Easton's next possession, Pacchioli had a 33-yard run, on the end of which he carried some Zephyr defenders, to set up Easton's winning score, his own 2-yard run in a 13-10 win.
While no one wearing Easton's Red and Black likes to lose to Phillipsburg, it did help that the Rovers had another game to play -- a district title game at that, and against Whitehall, a team which beat Easton 17-14 earlier this year.
So Easton coach Steve Shiffert did not have to look far for motivation, even though he had only two practices -- a light one in the gym Friday and a short walkthrough outside Saturday.
"It was hard, but you have to give kids credit," Shiffert said. "Their character really came out. We were overconfident Thursday and paid dearly for it. But thank goodness they had enough character to come back and win this one."
Shiffert said he did not dwell on the loss, so as to not allow Phillipsburg to beat his team twice.
"We talked about it briefly and that was it," he said. "It's over. It's done. We have to move on. Plus, we owed these guys (Whitehall) one. We had a 14-point lead or whatever it was (On Oct. 1) and lost it."
Next up is a date in the PIAA quarterfinals against LaSalle College High School of Philadelphia at 1 p.m. Saturday at Charles Martin Stadium in Northeast Philadelphia. Shiffert will give his team a rare two-day break -- today and Monday -- before getting back to business on Tuesday.
"I don't think we ever lost to P'burg and bounced back and won, but in this little odyssey we go through, it's the first time we did this," Shiffert said. "That's quite an accomplishment -- plus, the way we did it."
Had Pacchioli not made those two great plays, the story would likely have been different and Whitehall might be celebrating its first district title since 1997.
Tyler Thomas, one of four Easton captains with Caldwell, Pacchioli and Bambary, said there's something to be learned from this.
"We're a little beat up. We're happy. That's all that matters," he said. "If you lose on Thanksgiving, you feel like your season is kind of meaningless, but still, we have to move on. We're going to try to win a state championship, something Easton has never done.
"You can move on and do better things, even if you lose on Thanksgiving."

Easton rebounds to repeat as District 11 Class 4A champion
FROM THE MORNING CALL
As he chased wide receiver Tyler Artim from behind, Easton senior Justin Pacchioli thought back to the late third-quarter interception he threw that had turned the momentum in Whitehall's favor.
Pacchioli's relentless pursuit of Artim atoned for his one major miscue and set up the Red Rovers to repeat as District 11 Class 4A champions.
When Pacchioli caught up with Artim, he ripped the football out, allowing teammate Ian Hayden to fall on it and give Easton possession with 10 minutes, 17 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Pacchioli then led the Red Rovers on a 12-play, 72-yard drive he punctuated by running 2 yards into the end zone for a go-ahead score.
Two more stops by Easton's defense allowed Pacchioli to hold the ball one final time in his Cottingham Stadium career. He took a snap and retreated 7 yards before kneeling down to seal the top-seeded Red Rovers' 13-10 win over No. 3 Whitehall in the District 11 Class 4A final Saturday night.
Just two days after a heartbreaking 3-0 overtime loss to rival Phillipsburg, Easton (12-2 overall) rebounded to beat a Whitehall team that handed it its only other loss. The Red Rovers advanced to the PIAA Class 4A quarterfinals for a second straight year and again will face District 12 champion La Salle, which ended their season last year en route to a state title.
As he has throughout this season, Pacchioli came up clutch when Easton needed him. The senior quarterback/safety ran for 83 yards and threw for another 81 and a touchdown.
His defensive hustle stood above everything else. Whitehall had a 10-6 lead with Artim racing toward the end zone early in the fourth quarter when Pacchioli ran him down and pried the ball loose.
"I knew he was either going to take it to the house or I was going to catch him," Pacchioli said. "I kind of put my whole mindset into catching him and stripping that football.
"I was saying, 'If I'm going to make up for it [the interception], now is the time,' " he added. "I just kind of had my eyes set on the ball and came through with a hard rip. I listened to coach [Steve] Shiffert, who's been teaching me all these good things over the years, and it finally paid off."
Pacchioli's play was no accident. Easton practices stripping the ball in its "Wake Forest" drill every day.
The strip came in the middle of a stunning turn of events that left Whitehall (10-3) stung. One play before Pacchioli's strip, Zephyrs senior quarterback Chris Polony left the game with a leg injury. He never returned.
That left sophomore Nicholas Shafnisky to run the offense. His first play was a beauty, as he hit Artim for what wound up as a 41-yard completion.
It ended in disaster when Pacchioli forced the fumble. Zack Bambary (game-high 89 rushing yards) and Pacchioli did most of the work on the ensuing touchdown drive, with Pacchioli's 33-yard run on a 1st-and-10 from Whitehall's 39-yard line the biggest play. All 72 yards on the drive came on the ground.
Easton finished with 204 rushing yards, while Whitehall had just 63.
"They trusted me in the second half, and I trusted my team," said Bambary, who had 72 of his 89 yards in the second half. "That's something that gets us a drive like that, it's trust. To come out two days after the biggest loss in the world, it's something spectacular."
Whitehall, which beat Easton 17-14 during the regular season, fought till the end but was undone by injuries and mistakes. The Zephyrs played much of the second half without defensive starters Christopher Fiore, Glen Klein and Matt Bonshak, all of whom suffered first-half injuries.
"We had a lot of adversity in this football game," Whitehall coach Tony Trisciani said. "The next kid just has to go in. 'Shaf' went out there and he played. We made a few plays. Things fell apart on us there at the end in crunch time – some penalties, some bad snaps, turnovers and all that. But I'm real proud of this football team for getting to where we did this year and being three points away, one play away, from winning the football game."
Whitehall took a 10-6 lead in the third quarter after getting the one turnover it generated, with Michael Williams returning an interception to the Easton 26-yard line. Eric Fiore (58 rushing yards) scored seven plays later from 2 yards out.
The Zephyrs managed just one first down the rest of the way. Their final drive ended when Shafnisky spun out of trouble and hit David Frana for a 23-yard completion, but it left them 2 yards shy of a first down.
Pacchioli took a knee on the next play, starting the celebration on the Easton sideline.
"You're never going to forget that loss in your senior year to Phillipsburg, especially a 3-0 loss at that," Pacchioli said. "But this is definitely going to clear the memory for a little bit.
"I'm going to be thinking about this one for a little while."

Lehigh defense silences the dome and Panthers
FROM THE MORNING CALL
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — After nearly a week of hearing about how loud it was inside Northern Iowa's UNI Dome, Lehigh's players and fans were the only ones making noise at the end.
Immediately after the final whistle of the Mountain Hawks' 14-7 FCS playoff win over Northern Iowa, Lehigh players sprinted to the southwest corner of the indoor stadium and celebrated the program's first playoff victory since 2001 with their fans.
"L-E-H-I-G-H!" they chanted loudly enough to be heard in all parts of the 16,000-seat arena.
"Probably half of that crowd was there for me," said Lehigh junior and Omaha, Neb., native Jake Drwal, whose 62-yard touchdown reception tied the game early in third quarter. "I had about 30 people there for me, family and friends, and it was good for me to give them a good showing."
It was good for everyone who bleeds brown and white.
This is now a 10-2 football team that has won eight straight games and no matter what happens from here, they deserve some cheers, not to mention some respect.
The Mountain Hawks are not the most dominant or awe-inspiring team you'll ever see, but they are resilient and keep plugging away even when the tide seems ready to flood against them.
For three straight weeks they have trailed at halftime after miserable offensive showings over the first 30 minutes.
They don't get down on themselves, however.
They rely on a scrappy, swarming defense that just doesn't give up many points and an offense that overcomes its inconsistencies and mistakes and makes just enough plays to win.
Junior quarterback Chris Lum had another shaky start, throwing an interception that led to UNI's only touchdown drive — a 50-yard march that was capped by Tirrell Rennie's 17-yard TD scamper with 4:32 left in the first quarter.
There were many other squandered opportunties for Lehigh over the rest of a largely frustrating first half that ended with UNI leading 7-0.
But again, rather than let their misfortune snowball into complete failure, Lehigh composed itself, regrouped and flourished after intermission.
This time it was a pair of Lum TD passes that turned the 7-0 deficit into a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.
Drwal made a great play on the game-tying TD.
"The linebacker had man coverage on me, and I caught the ball and he hit me, but didn't tackle me," Drwal said. "He tried to push me out of bounds real quick, but didn't get enough of me, I guess."
Northern Iowa, the Missouri Valley Conference champs, didn't get enough of anything on this day as possession after possession Lehigh turned them away without points. Three missed field goals helped.
"We were confident coming in, but I was real impressed with how we played," senior safety John Veniero said. "This is probably the best opponent we've beaten and we were just relentless. We shut down their run, didn't let them throw the ball. A game like this reassured me of how good our defense is."
The key was shutting down Rennie, a nimble-footed, shifty quarterback who is dangerous once he gets outside the pocket.
"We were blitzing a lot and keeping contain," Veniero said. "Our outside players just kept him inside because he's most dangerous when he gets on the corner."
Rennie had an injured knee and said he was probably less than 100 percent.
But he didn't make excuses.
When it was over, you could add him to a growing list of people who have respect for Lehigh football, especially this Mountain Hawks defense.
"Their defense was great," Rennie said. "When you look at their schedule their only two losses were to Villanova and New Hampshire, both top-ranked, playoff teams. They came out to prove that they were a good team. They came out with intensity. They didn't care who was lined up in front of them."
In the postgame press conference someone asked Lehigh coach Andy Coen if he was glad the field was expanded this year to 20 teams. The thought that's how Lehigh qualified, and didn't know the Patriot League received an automatic bid.
Coen diplomatically corrected the reporter, saying that the Patriot has had the automatic spot for years.
It was an easy mistake to make because the league had not won a game in the tournament since 2003 and had been embarrassed in most of those losses.
"But when a Patriot League team goes undefeated in the league, history shows they win playoff games," Coen said. "That hadn't happened since 2003. Now it has happened with us, and we're thrilled."

Second-half magic spells a "W" for Lehigh
FROM THE MORNING CALL
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —It seems to be some kind of second-half magic.
But Lehigh coach Andy Coen says it's more about just staying calm and adjusting.
"You go in at halftime and you look at some things, change some things," Coen said. "But it comes down to the kids having confidence. We're a second-half team. They know it. And they respond. They have great character and they believe in each other."
And Lehigh added a bunch of believers Saturday as they shook off another halftime deficit and posted a gritty, hard-fought 14-7 FCS playoff win over Northern Iowa in the UNI Dome.
A much smaller than expected crowd of 5,990 never could turn up the volume in what was expected to be a noisy building.
In the end, Lehigh came to love the dome. Several players were seen taking pictures of the place — especially the scoreboard — before heading to the locker room.
"This was just a great experience and one of the funnest games I've ever played in," said senior safety John Veniero who had one of Lehigh's three interceptions. "To play such a good football team in a tough environment was something I'll never forget. I'll never forget the look on the faces of our fans when it was over."
It was the third consecutive week that the Mountain Hawks trailed at halftime, but found a way to put something together after intermission.
Junior quarterback Chris Lum shook off a first-half interception to throw two third-quarter touchdown passes and let it up to the defense to finish it off.
It is Lehigh's first playoff win since 2001, the Patriot League's first since 2003 and secured a spot in next Saturday's FCS Round-of-16.
The 18th ranked Mountain Hawks, who at 10-2 have won 10 games for the first time since 2001, will get a much shorter trip this time. They will be heading to No. 5 ranked Delaware for a meeting with the third-seeded Blue Hens at Tubby Raymond Field. It will be a noon start.
Delaware, 9-2, is coached by Emmaus native K.C. Keeler and led by former Penn State quarterback Pat Devlin, had a first-round bye in the 20-team, FCS tournament.
The Blue Hens will be the third Colonial Athletic Association member Lehigh has played this season and the first two haven't gone that well – losses to Villanova and New Hampshire.
But this is a much more resilient, resourceful team than the one that lost two September games. The defense, in particular, continues to shine and gives the offense time to get its act together.
"I can't say enough about how well our defense played in bottling up an explosive offense all day," Coen said. "We got relentless pressure on their quarterback [Tirrell Rennie] and we got three interceptions including a couple late in the first half that kept us in the game.
"Our special teams were also very important. Alex Smith had some great punts that pinned that back deep and we blocked a field-goal attempt by them."
The offense, well, it did just enough, overcoming inconsistency and three turnovers to put 14 points on the board. It was the lowest point total in a Lehigh win since a 14-7 victory over Yale in 2002.
"We made just enough plays," Coen said.
The two big ones were the two Lum touchdown passes.
The first was a 62-yard strike from Lum to Jake Drwal. Drwal caught the ball in tight coverage near the sideline and the UNI defender appeared to think Drwal went out of bounds.
He stayed in bounds and kept going for a tying touchdown.
"Jake made a great play, and Chris made a great back-shoulder throw," Coen said.
The second TD pass came one play after a John Kennedy interception.
Lum, who finished 18-for-37 for 267 yards, found his favorite target, sophomore Ryan Spadola, on a deep crossing route for a 28-yard touchdown with 2:07 left in the third quarter. Spadola had nine catches for 127 yards.
There was a lot more drama in the fourth quarter, including two missed UNI field-goal attempts – one that was blocked by Jarard Cribbs.
In the end, it was the Lehigh defense – as it has most of this memorable season – standing tall and refusing to let a close game slip away.
The Mountain Hawks limited UNI to 188 yards rushing, 30 below the Panthers' seasonal average. They also recorded four sacks and held the No. 16 ranked Panthers to just four third-down conversions on 16 attempts.
Rennie, a threat every time he got the ball, never found open spaces; at least not after his 17-yard TD run in the first quarter. The touchdown capped a 50-yard drive set up by Lum's interception.
Rennie ran 27 times and had a net-86 yards, but averaged just 3.2 yards per carry. He completed just six passes.
"It's an explosive offense predicated on their quarterback," Coen said. "[Defensive coordinator] Dave Kotulski and the rest of our defensive coaches just do a good job of putting our kids where they need to be. Today, except maybe for one time, they were right where they needed to be."
And, now Lehigh is where it wants to be – headed to Delaware for some December football.
But on the plane ride home, Coen and his team planned to savor the moment.
"We've had some very good wins this season and this is without a doubt the best because it's the best football team that we've beaten," he said. "I'm very proud of our team and everybody associated with our program."
